Why do I play at 1024 x 768? What about TFT users.

If you have just re-installed because of that "dos desaster", the ini file won't be there. Start the game once to create it.
Otherwise...
:confused:

Aha!!!

Thank you :worshp:

I actually just formatted my hard drive and had to reinstall everything including Civ! (No not because of that dos thing - I always make a back up before meddling with critical files ;) )

I'm just glad to know it wasn't an IQ thing!! :crazyeye:

Finally, I the found the file... man I swear I kept going over and over the main folder and found nothing... changed my folder options to show hidden files - still nothing...

after an hour later of feeling like a ****** - i finally got it!

thanks for the tip Grille, I guess you have to play the game then exit before it that file shows up...

anyhow I set it to 1600x1200 resolution - I found it way way too hard on the eyes... see how 1400x1050 looks...

I actually like the main map to be on a large scale - it come in handy especially when you have you are playing on a larger map... however the city screen & the game's main menu become very small when resolution is set at 1600x1200 - you end up getting a large black border around both those screens....

question: is there a way to making the city screen or main menu stretch out to fit a 1600x1200 resolution setting?

I tried to get a change in resolution this way:
Video Mode=XXXX
Refresh=YY

substituded various numbers but none of them had an effect - possibly I was doing it wrong?

Video Mode=1400
Refresh=60

what worked for me however was the line:
KeepRes=1
added to the PTW ini file and i simply changed the resolution setting in windows before playing the game... and it worked perfectly...

I'm not 100% sure, but I *think* you can only set 3 different values for the resolution. There are some files in the civ3 main folder (again... :mischief: ), you may look at. Dunno if named readme.txt or *.pdf or something. Open file -> search for "video" or "1024" (if you don't find anything, it's the wrong file, try next).
You'll be directed to the "edit ini file" passage. Three possible resolutions are listed. AFAIK at least these should work fine.
I have never tried to set the "refresh rate" line. I don't know if this rate can produce malfunctions, due to monitor/video card capabilities.
Sorry for being vague, but I'm not at home right now.

I copied this part out of the Readme.txt form the Civilization folder (not the play the world folder):

*KeepRes=1 - When set to 1, your desktop resolution will be what the game uses. 1024x768 screens will be centered, but you will be able to see much more of the map on one screen.
*NoSound=1 - Disables all sound in-game.
*Video Mode=1792 / Video Mode=1600 / Video Mode=1280 / Video Mode=1152 - Force screen resolution to one of these settings.

But I must admit that the Video Mode=XXXX doesn't work on my computer with my PTW- version of CivIII and Windows XP. I don't know why. The KeepRes=1 does work, so it isn't a problem for me. I set the resolution at my desktop at 1152*864 and Civ III looks nice at this resolution.

There is no way to make the main menu or the city screen stretch to a bigger monitor. If you change your monitor size like with "KeepRes=1" then only the main map will stretch and inded the city screen is as you posted. There is no changing that.

The reason for this is that the city screen and the advisors are made as fixed bitmap backgrounds over which other text is displayed. They aren't rendered like with a 3d shooter where everything scales up and down.
