Why forcing people to install STEAM ?

Which is your prerogative. Could you possibly expound on why you don't like Steam?

That is too bad, steam is awesome. Today's peak of Civ V players having a great time was 40,839.

I decided not to buy Civ 5 as a result of this.

A pity.
Frankly it is your loss. It is the simple and plain truth.

And they used steam because it lets them do many things without extra development. Achievements, friend list and tracking, ingame chat, instant game updates and so much more.

All the bad press about Steam is coming from players who tried installing Pirated steam games and got their account banned (I realized this very recently). Go try it and make an opinion for yourself.

And how do you know that everyone playing the game is having a great time? :p

A lot of those people might be here tomorrow complaining. ;)

I think at least that many are here at any given time complaining... :)

Ya alot of people feel this way. But they still managed to sell ~200k copies and which is an an estimated 6-7 million off of sales. Which begs the question.. how much did development cost with them cutting the dev team in mid production.

The thing I don't like about Steam is that it installs the game on whatever drive Steam is on. I like to be organized and have different drives for things and games. So with Steam and multiple games via steam I have to maintain a huge hard drive, making it more time consuming to maintain.

Because it's been at or around that number since release and if the same people complaining are still playing the game I think we have quite a few hypocrites here.

I'd be interested to know where you got the sales figures. That would be worth a news item, right?

best place for sales data.
As to the $$ amount made from sales thats purely my own estimate based off of retailers paying 30$ a copy.. so it could be far from accurate. Probably is considering steam probably pays far less per copy than average mortar and brick retailers.

Steam is great for those people that just want to play the game and don't care how the computer works. Not so great for those of us that like to micro-manage every task of administering our computers.

THis x1000. +1 internets for you:goodjob:

I'm a software engineer, used Linux since 1996, have a Mac now, I do care how computers work and want them to work really well.

I also have a job and a million other things to do in my life, and love when things are simple and trouble-free (that's why I got a Mac, I got better things to spend time on than troubleshooting or tweaking). So far Steam has been, except once, when I was at a cottage 1h30 away from any internet access, cellphones not working, and for some reason my friend's Civ5 disappeared from his hard drive (no clue how he did it or what happened to Win7..), and we had to drive back to civilization (lol) so we could activate his copy on Steam before playing again....

Otherwise, it hasn't been getting in the way, and patches are downloaded automatically whenever I boot into Windows? Sounds good to me, much less to manage and I can focus on having fun.

Which means you don't like to micromanage your PC.. meaning the comment doesnt apply to you.
