If one had asked Bach and the gang back in the 18th c., they most likely would have said that the Italians dominated. After all, Viennese composers, like Mozart, were doing their damndest to copy the Italian masters of the opera.

Which is why time has to take place in order to really get a good picture of the separation between works of permanence and mere period pieces, and to achieve the clarity needed to make distinctions of worth between the permanent stuff too.
So maybe some post-1950 composer will turn out to be the next Bach, but I highly doubt it, because the modern period is largely (though not always) divorced from the aesthetic.
