Why is the AI so RUBBISH at war.

I've seen the AI get into situations like that before. I don't think it is quite stupid enough to start an attack with only ranged units. I think what happens is, the front line units get killed and the AI doesn't know that it should retreat when it has only ranged units left. Or, it is trying to send more front line units but they can't move past the Carpet of Derp.

The city-state was probably smart enough to aim for the melee units first

...or the AI is really smart. They are experience-farming!

Ok, not really.

Also I love the term "carpet of derp"

I've noticed this recently. I tell, several tiles away, there would be a dozen pikemen or something, but the AI just won't send them.

combat Ai is one of the hardest things to make

And I have never seen a perfec turn based combat AI

Instead they give them bonusses on high levels

As Washington, I once reduced Hiawatha to a single tundra city. Eventually Askia asked to open borders because he wanted to wipe out Hiawatha. I let him and he gets 8 units settled up right next to his last city and.. nothing happens. He has mud cavalry and cannons and does nothing. Askia does nothing to try and take that last city. Is it because Askia was in my borders even though I let him? What, was he really waiting on reinforcements to take a 5-tile tundra city that had no units and would've wiped Hiawatha off the face of the earth?

Then it just gets frustrating to see Hiawatha's units die to city bombardment because they're standing in range of the bombardment but are still sitting there waiting for.. something? Next time Askia asked for open borders I just told him no. He didn't deserve to take out Hiawatha if he was going to derp like that.

And it's really frustrating because 20 turns prior he had no trouble going to war with Greece with me and snagging a few of Alex's his last cities that I actually wanted to own.

The AI obviously is intelligent if it has the reasoning power to mess with you. It all makes sense now, the AI is actually so advanced it plays horribly just to frustrate the player in revenge for its countless defeats at lower difficulties. Brilliant!

nothing new here the ai has been crap since release, I will say it was better than release the last time I played it looked like the ai had some idea of what it was doing.
