Will the Ages system force you to change civs?

I am hoping they add something to let you keep the name of your civ even if you change the uniques, but that's not something they have now (or they probably would have shown it)

That ⬆️

It would be really easy to implement a simple system where you can choose to either adopt the name of your new civ or keep the old one, it wouldn't change any mechanics and it would go a long way towards making everyone happy, both those who like the idea of changing their civs and those who dislike the idea that the civ they choose to play at the start won't "stand the test of time"

Hopefully this is something they add at the same time they add custom religions (those were not in the exploration age stream but mostly confirmed to be added before release)

For me I think that system would only be fully implemented if there was a "pick your civ (which incorporates the colour, city list, regional building and unit styles, and probably narrative events) as a completely separate thing at the start, and then a "pick your mechanics" each age. That way you've got the whole suite of civs to pick from and you don't lose the benefits from switching civs in era specific mechanics.

But at that point you lose the flavour behind the mechanics. It'll feel quite odd picking a set of mechanics each era that are themed for saying the Mongols but you continue to be playing Germany. I don't think anything they do to try and force a layer of consistency over the top of age switching will make this enjoyable for me and the reasons I like civ.

Ive just settled on the fact that civ switching is a thing and they only satisfying way for me to get the civ experience I want is to have 3 contiguous entities that overlap across the ages in people /city list enough that I feel I'm playing the same civilization.

But I'm absolutely not willing to pay enough to get that experience.

Quite a radical and ambitious change.I think it is a pretty dangerous gamble and difficult to get it to work without breaking immersion but if they get this system to work then they will prove once again why CIV sits on top of the genre. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Yes. there's no transcend options as in Humankind.
And also a Tabula Rasa at the age changes. EVERYONE GOT THE AGE BREAK AT THE SAME TURN no matter how far a given player progresses. progresses done are instead converted to legacy points that instead gives player New Age Starting choices, either new armies, extra cashes, more settlement caps, more yields, and many more.
