Will this be okay for the next 18 months?

Yes, I believe it will be able to run most news games on medium for the next 18 months, provided a sufficient video card is included in the computer.

Why are you asking? Are you looking to purchase only the cpu as an upgrade? If we know more, we may be able to give more accurate advice.

I am building a budget comp. All I have is 1k and after shipping all of the parts and getting the monitor I have 750.

I was looking at something like this for that price.

Qty. 1, aBX: [ CA-ST402B ] ( Front USB, Audio ), Black w/ 350W PSU
- Qty. 1, Original Case Power Supply
- Qty. 1, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, Socket AM2, 2.5GHz, 64-Bit Dual-Core, 2x512KB Cache
Mobo: - Qty. 1, BioStar GeForce 6100, AM2, RAID, w/Audio, LAN, Video. [ NF61S Micro AM2 SE ]
- Qty. 1, DDR2: 2048MB 667MHz / PC5400
- Qty. 1, DDR2: 2048MB 667MHz / PC5400
- Qty. 1, Geforce 8800GT: 512MB
- Qty. 1, 250GB SATA-II 7200RPM w/8MB Buffer
- Qty. 1, ROM:DVDRW: 18x Dual-Format/Dual-Layer, Black Color
- Qty. 1, High Definition 7.1 Digtial Surround Sound
- Qty. 1, Windows XP Home - 32 Bit Edition - w/ CD set

Given the parts I need I know shipping them is going to be cheaper than anywhere here in town ( including Fry's ) and the price is a little cheaper than what I'd get building it my self.

741 + shipping / 803 altogether.

Do you think I could do better?

Unless you want quad-core, Intel is probably the way the way to go.

Get a better power supply

Mobo: - Qty. 1, BioStar GeForce 6100, AM2, RAID, w/Audio, LAN, Video. [ NF61S Micro AM2 SE ]

That mobo supports only 2gb of memory

Check the specs on the graphics card for the power supply requirements. And make sure you get a good brand. Most case+power supply combos suck.

And I'd recommend an Intel processor. Apparently ADM's processors don't complete well with Intel's DualCore and QuadCore series.

But then he'd to get a new motherboard, and by then he might as well buy/build a new system.

And yes, I know I recommended Intel earlier.

Thanks guys! :goodjob: I am taking all of your advice into consideration ..... now to wait for my tax returns

He would also want to upgrade to a 64-bit OS for more than 3gb of memory

2 GB isn't bad. But as noted, if you have more than 2 GB, a non-64bit OS can't address it.

BTW - a 64bit OS will still 'waste' some of your RAM by assigning memory addresses in the 2-3GB range for peripheral components, I believe.

So THAT's how you arrived at your 1k budget... you had $200 lying around;)

350 watts for the power supply is fine for that video card.

I'm running a 350 watt with a 8600 GT and lots of drives, and no problems.

Note: My 8600 has passive cooling, but I still have 3 fans hooked up (1x 120mm and 2x 80mm). And with a total of 4 drives I did have to step back one fan (I wanted (3x 80mm + 1x 120mm)) because 350 volts did seem to run out of juice at that point.

So you're really running like a GeForce 6000 series? That in itself should hardly draw any power.
