Windows 10

They're not really different devices though.

I've been using my tablet fulltime lately - it docks to my mouse, keyboard and monitor, I remote desktop to my server, and never see a single metro app or touch the tablet screen.

When I want to undock it, I just unplug a couple cords and it's a fully usable tablet where I use metro app with the touchscreen.

Tablets will never be able to beat PCs when it comes to gaming or serious image and video editing.

For the high end PC games they will never be able to put that kind of hardware into a tablet, at least not for a long time. The same reason home consoles tend to be a generation ahead of there portable counterparts. Some games with less requirements could work but high requirement ones would not. There will always be a need for a traditional desktop and UI for it.

They should at least make the start menu an OPTION for Windows 9. Keep the desktop and make start menu or start screen an option. Make it so if someone does not want to use the Metro UI, they don't have to.

I can use triple monitors with my tablet over RDP on a gigabit connection to my server with 32GB RAM and 8 processor cores - where's the problem?

I mean the tablet by itself. If you are connecting a tablet to all that why not just use a regular computer? My preference is for desktops or laptops. I mean I can see some of the appeal of tablets since they are very compact and easy to carry around, kind of nice to check my email or watch YouTube on the go on a very light platform. I just don't see them replacing the laptop or desktop PC. There will always be a market for full size PCs.

Going back to Windows 9, there can be some kind of happy medium reached. Keep the desktop UI and make the classic start menu an option so you can choose between that and the start screen. Maybe have a "Classic mode" similar to XP mode in Windows 7.

Ive heard about Windows 8.1 which sounds like a really glorified service pack. Is this to do with Windows 9, or something else completely

Unrelated to Windows 9 - plan for MS is to roll full new operating every three years and 8.1 size updates on a yearly basis. (Discounting the years where they release full new operating systems.)

Okay thank you, I was a little confused about that.

I just feel strongly about what Windows should be. My way of computing is very important to me and how I live my life.

I actually feel the same way. A mobile device is meant to be mobile. If I have to carry all those accessories around with it, then it is no longer mobile. In that case, I'd just carry a laptop.

1. There's not a single thing removed from Windows Blue. The desktop works exactly the same as Windows 8.

2. For that matter, the desktop in Windows 8 works pretty much the same as the desktop in Windows 7.

3. I use Windows 8 on a triple-monitor non-touch-screen desktop with mouse and keyboard, and it's better than Windows 7 at this.
It never fails. Just as I'm finally starting to figure things out...

Well, Windows 8 is working pretty well for me (thank you for your help, Zelig!), so is my new laptop, and I just want to settle in for the next few years. So I'll just let this next version get tried, dissected, argued about, and hopefully I won't need to worry about it at least for the duration of my laptop warranty. :D

Well Win8.1 is very likely to do be a free automatic upgrade to Windows 8, but as I said, there are no changes to the desktop, it's pretty much entirely a set of feature upgrades to the metro interface.

Well my main concern is that a future installment of Windows is they might get rid of the desktop completely in favor of Metro. Something that would be a terrible idea for Microsoft. One great things about Windows is backwards compatibility if they switch to Metro it would likely kill that. It could also mean an end to freeware. The desktop helps keep Windows an open platform for developers which is why Windows has done so well. I just do not like the interface in Metro, it is absolutely horrible. Nothing could ever replace the desktop. Hopefully if Windows 8 bombs bad enough they might realize that Metro will never work on a PC platform. Microsoft Bob, Active Desktop and the sidebar all failed.

For Windows 9, I am hoping for the best and fearing the worst. The thought of them abandoning the desktop is a terrifying thought. Like Fallen Angel Lord said, mobile stuff is meant to stay mobile, don't water down the potential power of a high end PC with a mobile OS. Hopefully if Windows 8 keeps doing badly, Windows 9 will be more like Windows 7 and do away with Metro, that is the best case scenario.

I don't think the desktop is at much risk of going away in the near future, you can still run 16-bit Windows 3.1 programs on Win8 32-bit.

MS might finally get around to not releasing a 32-bit version of Windows with Win9. If they follow this timeline for deprecating the desktop, you've got until 2032 before it happens.

Even than getting rid of the desktop would likely be a mistake. If people think the reaction to the start menu being removed was bad, it would be MUCH worse if the desktop was removed completely. Like I have said, I hope Windows 8 fails bad enough and Microsoft listens to there customers. Windows 9 will hopefully be more like what Windows 7 was. Desktop focused again with an option of choosing start menu or start screen. Nothing wrong with freedom of choice being included. Hopefully Microsoft is smart enough to keep the desktop and Windows 9 and bring it back to being the main focus of the OS, maybe even do away with Metro. They can keep Metro on an upgraded Windows RT for tablets and phones but I see Metro UI as a failure on PCs. Most Windows users HATE it on a PC. Steve Ballmer made a mistake here, he seems to be doing to Microsoft what Vince Russo did to WCW.

How do you have any idea what will be a bad idea in 2032? Do you have much difficulty not being able to run 16-bit programs on Windows 8?

Windows 9 is not going to be more like Windows 7. There is zero chance of that. Zero.

Again, there is nothing that Windows 7 does better than Windows 8.

And people like Windows 8. See http://www.zdnet.com/just-how-much-do-people-hate-windows-8-7000013319/?s_cid=e539. There are only 12 percentage point more people who rate Windows 8 1-star than people who rate Windows 7 1-star, and that's pretty easy to discount as people who haven't seriously used it, and don't understand it.

That said I think Windows 9 will be great for those who use it, but for me I will have gone *nix by then.
