I recently installed Civilization IV and both expansion packs all with the latest patches, and then installed (with some difficulty) Rise of Mankind. I then tried to start Beyond the Sword, this is the error I got (my dxdiag is posted below):

Initialize Renderer failed. Check DirectX Installation, Latest Graphics, Drivers and Graphics settings
Parameters:
-width = 1024
-height = 768
-flags = 0xc
-hwnd = 0xc04bc
-adaptrid =0
-deviceid= 3
Error:Creation failed: Invalid 3D device type

I don't know if it's due to being a mac, but your directx log reports only as stardard VGA driver installed for your NVIDIA card. That probably wouldn't be enough to run the game, you'll need the driver for your card from NVIDIA.

Also have you installed the latest directx9c from Microsoft

You may get more specific help in the mac section of this forum.

I posted the actual graphics card on the post from my mac side. I'm not sure if that means that its only using that graphics card for the mac side, but if you look I have "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M:"

Yes, I noticed that, but the appropriate portion of the directx log only indicates a VGA driver, not one specific for that card:

Maybe it's a Mac thing, as I'm a PC person I really don't know. The people in the mac section may have more idea

ah you are right. It turns out that the proper order for installation is install vista onto boot camp, use Mac OS X CD to install drivers, THEN upgrade to Windows 7. Since the Windows 7 was an upgrade, it couldn't identify the drivers on the Mac OSX. For example, the previous order I installed them was Vista, upgrade to Windows 7, then install drivers from the Mac. In that order the Mac couldn't recognize the drivers, whereas in the correct order all it needed to do was copy them over.

Thanks for the help :)
