Looks like Korea and Japan won Pool A handily, but in the last game, Korea pulled an upset over Japan!

Too bad these weren't televised (March Madness pretty much floods any other sports out. :( ). But, this matchup, even though the only signifigence was a psychological win and bragging rights, was pitching vs. hitting (or rather, "Great pitching" vs "Timely Hitting"). I was expecting Japan to win, but Korea won instead. Korea won 3-2.

In the other game, the result was Chinese Taipei 12, China 3.
Final Standings for Pool A:
Code:
Team W L T RA/9 ERA AVG Last Game Next Game
 Korea 3 0 0 1.00 .313 KOR 3,JPN 2 vs TBD 12 Mar 8pm Local 11pm ET
 Japan 2 1 0 3.00 .356 KOR 3,JPN 2 vs TBD 12 Mar 1pm Local 4pm ET
 Chinese Taipei 1 2 0 6.84 .265 TPE 12,CHN 3
 China 0 3 0 9.72 .185 TPE 12,CHN 3

They were televised in my area (Columbus, Ohio)
I watched a rebroadcast of the China v Chinese Taipei game last night on the local channel two. I believe these games were also shown live on ESPN 2 early in the morning.

Japan and Korea got through as I expected, but I certainly didn't think Japan would lose a game.

in baseball, a one game victory can be the result of luck.

In a 11 game series, no doubt Japan would have won at least 7.

lol, China got it handed to them.

Obviously :p

And bad too. I was only able to catch part of the korrea china game, and that was unwatchable, because it was borring, and the Tokyo Dome was virtually empty. even the most borring game can become watchable with an active enough crowd. The shots of empty seats were just bothersome. Why did they have to have most of the seats that sold be behind home plate?

Edit: I'm staying home from school tuesday to watch the Dominican v Venezuela match. That should be good, with a much better crowd.

Yeah, it would be like watching the US cricket team.

The US has a cricket team? I thought that was a British only sport. :)

Alright, we beat the US. Not quite "Miracle on Grass", but we stand a pretty good chance of advancing to the next round.

man...the USA made a comeback too, showed some heart. Our pitchers were pretty bad.

Wow, we beat the US. Just need to beat Mexico and we will be undefeated in this round. :yeah:

Canada's losing to Mexico, and looks like a neat little 3-way tie shaping up in the division -- and possibly another one if the right teams win/lose (but the advancement possibilities aren't as interesting.)

Here's Pool B:

Code:
POOL B SCENARIOS
Canada advances:
• If it wins Thursday in its game against Mexico, finishing Pool play with a perfect 3-0 record.
• If it loses Thursday against Mexico, but allows two runs or less.

Team USA advances:
• If Canada defeats Mexico on Thursday, and USA defeats South Africa on Friday.
• If Mexico defeats Canada and scores three or more runs, and USA defeats South Africa on Friday.

Mexico advances:
• If it defeats Canada on Thursday.
• If it loses to Canada, and USA loses to South Africa by seven or more runs.

It looks like it'll be:

Canada - 2-1
Mexico - 2-1

If USA wins, then:
USA - 2-1

Canada has a high RA/9 stat, and needs to give up no more than 2 points to advance. They gave up 6. USA beats the tie-breaker with Mexico (although Mexico is beating Canada, and Canada beat the US - paper-rock-scissors, thus the Runs Allows stat). I think the US would have to stay within a certain Runs Allowed total, too (probably 10-12 runs or or something).

Another interesting thing to note:

If head-to-head tiebreakers weren't used, then South Africa would be in the hunt, but just barely. Mexico and USA would have to give up 15 runs before the 7th inning, and South Africa would have to give up no more than 0 runs to be in a tie with Mexico.

Pool D is the other possible 3 way tie (either for 1st, or for 2nd). Venezuela is winning, but just by a point.

Pool C - Cuba is beating The Netherlands, so that gives 2 2-0 and 2 0-2 teams. That pool will be set tonight if Cuba wins.

Pools B and D look to be the interesting ones. Wouldn't that be a hear-breaker? Canada goes 2-0, and loses by giving up too many runs. (They already have the highest Runs Allows, so it doesn't really look good for them if the US wins and the US gives up fewer than 12 points -- if it's after 7 innings, and the US is winning, Canada's out.)

Mexico 9 Canada 1

I think both teams (I only saw the play by play scorecard on the MLB WBC site) just wanted to get it over with after the first 3 innings.

Well, it was 16-0 after 3, so that's probably why they called it after 5 innings.

yup, if you are up by at least 15 by the 5th inning, or 10 by the 7th inning, then they end the game. Mercy rule.

Well, I'm recording the replay of the game (set to autorecord) at 3:00am EST. I was expecting to see the game after coming home from work, but they finished just as I left from work.

I was also looking at the other televises/replays, and it seems like 2/3rds of the games are on the Spanish version of ESPN. Nice, but doesn't help when you can't understand a word of Spanish! Not to mention I don't even GET that channel...

If I were to grade the media portion (showing the games), I'd give it an F. I was expecting something better... Who cares about basketball!?
