World Cup 2006 - Groups

Germany (A1) will open the tournament. Brazil will be F1. I think this change has to do with the fact that the holders no longer qualify automatically.

Oh! That's a nice tradition coming to an end. In that case, if no Brazil, then gimme Germany! :yeah:

I do not think that the US or South Korea are *thaaat bad*. certainly they can beat teams that are in the 3rd group. I expect the americans to make the round of 16 this year, for sure.
The US and South Korea are the teams that I think most of the seeds want to avoid in Pot 4. Of course Mexico, Argentina and Brazil also have to worry about Serbia.

But whether the US or Korea can make the second round depends a lot on the draw.

I wouldn't predict either of them to make the second round from a group with, for example, Italy/Argentina, Holland/Czech Republic, Ghana/Ivory Coast.

Was Portugal a 1 last cup?
Because they were the best of US-Poland-South Korea
Yeah, sure they were. They had 1 win and 2 losses in that group.

South Korea were hosts. So guess who was seeded? Duh.

Portugal, Angola and Brazil in one group! it would be great!

I was watching the News this morning, checky australian news and they were interviewing some Fifa guy about how it works. They were saying there best hope is to be put into the group with England as they are the weakest of the top 8. Then at the end the newsies say "oh and what group is New Zealand in?" and the fifa guy says new zealand didnt qualify and the newsies started laughing saying they know. Jerks :)

What the hell, Mexico seeded over us? I know that's how the system FIFA concoted worked out, but we have clearly done better than Mexico with pretty much the exception of 1998 WC. We beat them in WC2002 2-0 and at our home qualifier with them, as well as losing by a slim margin (2-1) in our away qualifier, in a stadium where one team (maybe) has won an away game against Mexico.

Regardless of that, I think the easiest group for the US would be:

Germany/Spain (Germany is weaker but has home advantage, so I can't decide)
Switzerland
Togo
USA

But the most interesting for us would be:

England
Australia
USA
Portugal

Lots of great rivalries there, all will be good games, with England-Australia, England-Portugal, England-USA, USA-Australia, and a 2002 group stage rematch, USA-Portugal. The only match I really wouldn't be overexicted about would be Australia-Portugal

A group of death for us would be:

Brazil
Netherlands
Ivory Coast
USA

Lots of interesting possibilities for this draw, I must say.

The seeding formula used previously would not seed the US and neither would this one. It would be very difficult to seed the US over Mexico based on objective criteria such as previous WC performance and rankings. Head-to-head results aren't that important since it's not a direct US x Mexico competition for a spot.

Mexico have earned the seed.

Whatever FIFA decides to use, there will always be cries of outrage...

According to FIFA's criteria, yes Mexico have earned a seed. Do they deserve it over the USA? No.

Again, objectively, why not?

A direct comparison between the US and Mexico in head-to-head games isn't enough because the US is not competing with Mexico for a seed, the US is competing with every other team, so you need to come up with an objective way of rating/comparing all teams.

Actually, I believe this system was designed so that at least one CONCACAF team would be seeded, so in a sense the USA was competing with Mexico.

Maybe FIFA will get it right in 2010 after we knock Mexico out again.

Both Mexico and the USA have absolutely nothing to do at the WC at all ;) .

What time is the draw?

I'm insulted. Croatia certainly isn't better (there was a draw between us and them at the EC in portugal), I wouldn't put Poland and Ukrainia befor us, and hey, don't forget: We beat Turkey on the way, and in the qualifications, we were in the group of draw, in which only France managed to win once (against a competitor!), but not against us, but against Ireland.
Don't underestimate us, or how many teams do YOU have in the Champions League? (;))

mfG mitsho

PS: The Spanish trainer said in an interview that he feared the netherlands and Switzerland most of pot 3.
PPS: The show of the draw starts at 8 pm (middle european time), but the actual drawing doesn't start until 9 pm I have been told.
