What's the worst luck you've had with random events? I just had 3 forests and a pasture destroyed, and I had only built a single worker and settler (and the pasture was the only improvment I had).

Barbarian uprising.
Slavery revolt (It's not too bad, until when you're low on gold and playing an OCC).
Bermuda triangle.

I think there was a hurricane random event which could destroy a small city (size less than 5 if I remember right) but that was turned off many versions ago. You can still find it if you dig through the XML.

pre-patch there was a mine disaster that used to trigger every few turns in spite of the cash outlays to improve mine safety. It was obviously broken.

As for the others, I don't often mind for more than a turn. I think random events make the game exciting. The worst concievable random event would be my neighbor Monty with tower shields.

I've never seen that event. What is it?

One of your modern ships sinks. Hard cheese if it's a Transport laden with Great People.

No no no.

ALL of your ships on that tile disappear. Including all ground units in transports.

This is just one of the reasons I play with Random Events turned off.

Gott im Himmel! I didn't know that, I usually lose a Stealth Destroyer!

I think it's when a storm destroys one of your money towns. They take so long to develope and pay-off.

I hate the civil unrest even, where tile improvements are destroyed, usually 2-4... Its also less irritating but still funny when a hurricane hits a costal city, thats close to some glaciers.

I never knew about the bermuda triangle.

Vulcano event, especially wen it destroys a couple of your mature towns completely!

Yeah, the volcano is definitely the worst in my opinion. It seems like it keeps happening in the same place every few hundred years! Sure it's realistic, but I wish I had known about the bad luck mountain before I built a city there.

I don't like it when my improvements are destroyed, but I kinda laugh a bit when hurricanes strike way off the tropics on the map, you know realism and all. I know its just a game, if they can limit the "space elevator" wonder by latitudes why not hurricane events.

My worst event ever was a barb uprising on turn 42. My warrior was exploring because my scout was up north and I spied a goody hut I had missed a few tiles away. I sent the warrior and got the hut (and Bronze Working, too!) and the next turn 4 horse archers spawned next to my wonderfully lovely, yet tragically undefended, solitary city. :(

My shortest game ever.

the worst events for me is early on when i dont have any money in the treasury, or not enough cities to build what it wants me to build.

Fourty-two turns and no Bronze Working yet? Have I met a fellow marathon player? :D

The severity of random events depends to a great degree on timing. A very early barbarian invasion of 4 archers when your only warrior is out exploring is a catastrophic event that ends your game. The same invasion when you have an axeman + warrior garrison and a couple chariots mobile reserve is a nothing event. One of the worst events I have had was the mine fire. Specifically 4 mine fires in a row on the same mine. You guessed it, the mine was my only source of metal and I had just been declared war upon by Genghis. I remined it three times only to have it burn again within 2 turns of the remine. So unable to build any spears or axes or swords my standing army was eroded to nothing and I fell to the Keshik horde. If that same series of improbable fires happened some other time it would have just been annoying. Another goodie is the classic where the city you are building a wonder in goes into rebellion just long enough for someone to snag the wonder away from you. Always a favorite. The take home lesson is that the actual event is secondary to the timing of the event.
