Would you have put in Brazil as a Civ?

Oh, come on guys... Few civilizations would stand the "4000BC Test". Not even "everybody favorite" Persia would survive the test.
I would love to play Canada, Argentina, Ireland, Cuba. Modern States can be fun too!
This kind of thread is BORING and just encourage some kind of passive-agressive messages. Nothing good might come from this discussion.
Because good things always come from censorship and safe spaces.

I honestly don't care, as long as the civs have interesting mechanics. Could have used names from fiction; Klingons, House Stark, The Culture, S.H.I.E.L.D., or whatever.

If given a limit of 19 Civs, no way.

In an expansion? Sure, why not. Didn't mind them in BNW and I'm all for adding new Civs and getting as large a roster as possible. Just kinda disappointed the only Civ really native to the Americas is the Aztecs

Well, that would be outside Civ's scope as a historical fiction game.

I don't hate Brazil being in the game, but I would certainly have chosen the Inca over them. Brazil could've waited an expansion or two.

Let's be honest.

They only did it so that a TSL Earth Map would have the civs spread out a little more than everyone in Europe.

Definition of the word "Civilization":
  • an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached
Any country, anywhere, any time can be considered - it's a stupid question you ask.

That´s a silly Definition. If there is a "true" Definition there is for sure no need to the community to build a state.
Brazil is a modern state and a part of the human civilization but not more.

I would have preferred Gran-Colombia instead of Brazil.
Unlike Brazil Gran-Colombia has a clear leader, a successful expansion and Gran-Colombia would have been something new.

No, but then again I wouldn't include America either.

Not sure if talking about the Civs mentioned or that threads like this often get locked... Been here 5 years, lurking for more, this type of thread often shows up... Often skirts racism when people try to justify why a certain culture didn't "deserve" to make the cut. I'm all for discussion on possible future Civs, but when people start to discuss why something that did make the cut shouldn't have like they had some sort of special rules they violated, history of this site shows that it almost never ends well.

Nah, my answer is probably not. Brazil's place is in Rhye's and Fall, as well as other colonial nations including America. I would rather have Mongols in the game, or Maya.

Yes, given the fact that we are including other modern Civilizations. I think it's actually very important that Brazil is in there for TSL maps, which is a way that I personally love the play the game. I would like to see more native American civs to fill out north america. Or (gasp) Canada.

For the vanilla game, no way, I can think of dozens of other civs I would have add.

IMHO Brazil doesn't add much to my gameplay, in Civ V for instance I never use it.

This is how I feel too.

In the vanilla game, Firaxis clearly wanted to include some civilizations that would show off some of the new mechanics and changes from Civ 5.

I'm sure that their short list included, among many other things, a civ that gets a bonus to the new great person system, a civ that gets a huge adjacency bonus from some inhospitable terrain type, and a civ that uses projects in an interesting way.

And some clever developer figured out that Brazil was a civilization that could hit all three of those targets.

A lot of Civ fans are history buffs, and that can sometimes color their perception of how civilizations are (or should be) included in the game. But it's not always about history. Mechanics are kind of important when you're making a video game.

I agree with those who have said that any country, civilization, or state can be a good addition to the game as a Civilization so long as it has interesting mechanics and I find that Brazil fits the bill nicely. It makes sense to me to include Civilizations from all time periods and having two (America and Brazil I believe?) exclusively post-colonial Civs seems like a good number. The Developers likely have an idea of where they'd like the game to go post launch and some of the popular Civs that didn't make it into the base game could have been held back because they would fit better with mechanics coming in expansions.

No, but then again I wouldn't include America either.

I guess there is a huge difference in global impact between the the US and Brazil. Anyway for me it´s okay that postcolonial, powerful and important states walking on earth 4000 BC, as long as they had/have the abstract chance to win the game in some way.

IMO this chance for Brazil is not bigger as for Gran-Colombia. The US already win the game:cowboy::D

Yes, why not? Although Brazil is a country with little historical impact, it is an important modern nation and a big emerging country. Nor can we expect the Incas always be the only ones only representatives of South America, right?

Of course not! We could also have the Muisca or the Taino or the Tupi or... ;)

We certainly need indigenous native tribes of South America in the game, Tupi is a good choice, I always defended its addition or the the Arawak.

But certainly Brazil is far more influential than any one of these tribes, Brazil is a huge geographical area of the continent, almost half the population, almost half of the economy, more gameplay options that any of these tribes would offer, among other reasons. No doubt Brazil is the second best South American civ model in the game, after the Incas.

But there are subjective criteria discussed here, some will prefer native civs South America, others will prefer moderns, I prefer both.
