Would you like a new Era in the game?

As there's new technologies and more smoother transition with military units from renaissance - industrial - modern eras, should there be a new Era between Renaissance and Industrial?

Like roughly something like this, using military units as guidelines:

Renaissance Era: Musketmen, Caravels, Astronomy, Cannon etc.

Imperial Era: Riflemen, Ironclads etc.

Industrial Era: The new WW one style machineguns, triplane fighters and bombers etc.

Modern Era: Fighter, Bomber, Air Carrier etc.

I agree on expanding the future era. In BtS, I usually played the Next war mod just to have all the extra future era stuff.

I suspect the classical era might be expanded due to the addition of religion.

An additional era there sounds nice to me too
Although I don't think there is a realistic chance for this in GK...
Maybe in a later expansion - if they continue development after this

I think where you've got it is right on the money, except it should maybe be called Enlightenment Era?

Yes rifleman and cannons where not renaissance units but industrial/ englightenment ...

So it would be nice to see a extended industrial era

I agree on that. I believe Renaissance is way too long (while Classical is too short).

As others said, it should be an era that covers from 1700 to 1850, making the Industrial Era more focused in late 19th Century warfare and WWI (maybe even WWII).

I would include steam power to this ''Enlightenment Era'', and it would lead to a new technology, industrialization, which belongs to Industrial Era.

In addition, in the new era, cities would use cannonballs instead of rocks for defense (I don't like the fact that they still throw rocks by 1800 AD).

Lord Olleus, good points about muskets and rifles. There's quite a difference in the guns on for example Napoleonic wars, American civil war, Boer war..

Also, as on new screenshots the infantry units (with the infantry logo) have been replaced by Yank WW2 infantry graphics, there's been speculation about the old "WW1 british Tommy" graphics to be used for an unit between riflemen and infantry.
Personally I feel that basic rifle-equipped infantry in the two world wars were pretty much the same, but it would give nice unit sets:

Trench infantry - Early tank - Biplane fighter - Biplane bomber - machine gunner (maybe a Dreadnought ship between Ironclad and battleship)

Infantry - Tank - Fighter - Bomber - Battleship - Carrier

Mech. Infantry - Modern armor - Jet fighter etc.

Basically, No.

I'd prefer they expand Classical first before adding a new Era.

I also wouldn't want WWI infantry and WWII infantry.

I prefer Infantry (World Wars) and Mech inf (late WW2->Modern)

The WWI->WW2 can be done with Machine guns (WWI) that get overpowered by Tanks (late WWI->WW2).

Tanks, Fighters, and Bombers are enough to have a WWI, WW2, and modern Version.

The rest can stick with 2 or 1
Ironclad-Battleship
Infantry-Mech Inf
Sub-Nuclear Sub
Destroyer
Missile Cruiser
Carrier

I don't think new eras are as necessary as simply expanding Classical. However, a divide between the 1700-1800s and the 1900s isn't a bad idea but I wouldn't say it's a necessary one.

I would love to have a future era or two like call to power. Also a prehistoric era as well.

I'm pretty sure that the muskeeters of Louis XIV are represented by in game muskets, and that the Union in the war of secession had riflemen, but have no idea about the 200 years in between?

Part of the problem, is that musketmen attempt to cover both the time from when muskets first became a niche weapon (early 17th C) through to when muskets became the mainstay of european armies (say, from the mid 18th C) although way to some undetermined period in the 19th Century, when riflemen take over until WW1.

More or less, yes (they seem to more represent the musketmen of the 1500s and 1600s than the 18th century ones).

Graphics like those of the Redcoat in this graphics mod could serve very well to represent 18th-century/napoleonic-era musketmen.

There is the issue of where to fit them though.

colonial era is a better name than imperial, IMO

I'm not opposed to the idea, but agree that fleshing out the existing eras (classical & industrial) is more important.

This plan you offer would be fine by me. Then I feel they should expand the classical era. There also has to be some time seperating WWI and WWII. Units in each era should have time in game to be used, and each one should have a purpose.

Or you could have as someone mentioned above a colonial era, followed by an imperial WWI era, and WWII could be the industrial era. Industry on a massive scale is what decided the outcome of that war. Of course the Colonial era could be a smaller transitional era, while the imperial era could be larger encompassing early rifles to infantry, ironclads to WWI tech ships, the birth of flight, and armored tactics etc. In the proposed imperial era you should have to research riflemen, railroad, and ironclads first before more advanced units, building, etc can be researched. So in other words the earlier techs first, then the later techs of the era can be researched. Perhaps there can be some type of transitional building which has to be built before later techs of the era can be researched. Perhaps a patent office (for researching early flight, and land ships) or something similar. Maybe an arms factory, or shipworks for land and naval tech. Just ideas I am throwing out there.

While I could care less, I think Industrial does deserve a "second" era.

Because if you were to "recreate" the tech tree in Civ 3, (which only had 4) Industrial is the only Era that would remain by itself if you get it.

I dunno why it bothers me, but i does, Ancient and Classical, Medieval and Renaissance, and Modern and Future, and the Forever Alone Industrial era xD. But I do think Classical should be expanded WAY more.

I'd also like to see the Classical era extended by another tech level. Right now its extremely short and easy to breeze through to hit Medieval very early.

It looks to me like the Industrial Era is being extended quite a bit as well, which interests me since it's my favorite Era.

It would also be sweet to have a longer Future era with more fantastical wonders and units.

Fortunately, this isn't an either/or question. I want them to flesh out the Classical and Future Era AND add another era as well.

Ancient
Classical
Medieval
Renaissance
Enlightenment
Industrial
Modern
Future

8 eras of civilization. Makes sense to me.

Except for a few graphic changes, the era transitions don't really mean anything anyways.

They do have effects.. RA costs, CS benefits.
