Wow....plus SMAC mod reborn!

Although I have never played Alpha Centauri, and therefore don't have much to contribute to this discussion, what I have read so far seems promising. Any idea when a playable version will be available?

"Playable" is pretty subjective, but "playable and not in a beta-testing sort of way", aka when we'll release some files...

It's going to take awhile... :P

Still trying to figure out which concepts to take and which not?

Much of the creation of game rules is reliant upon combat and unit production, which is something that has to be decided on pretty early. There really are two seperate ideas at this point:

1.) Pre-built units, such as in Civ4.
2.) "Chassis" units, with the ability to apply weapon/armor/special abilities after they're created.

We've all pretty much decided that a full-blown workshop is just too much, so right now we're hoping to finalize the code that will allow us to do both of these styles and then be able to playtest (more test than play..) just the unit creation, and see how acceptable each design is.

Many of the other elements have been generally agreed upon, but are still being cemented into a form that can be coded to some degree of certainty. It's these first few steps that should take awhile, but then I see the rest of the pieces start to fall into place in a timely manner (although timely to me is probably longer than timely to others ;P)

Thanks Gunner. Sorry for the short answer. ;)

Feel free to keep hashing out ideas here though. We're actively discussing a lot of topics and working on graphics as well. It's alive and kicking.

Well, it is a bit difficult hashing out ideas if there's not even a hint on what sort of ideas might be included.

Considering that we're willing to change everything except the basic story of seven factions crashlanding on an alien living planet, personally I'd certainly appreciate all kinds of ideas for units, base facilities, concepts, the bunch... for the usual SMAC tech themes such as Centauri techs, Psionics/Resonance, Ecology, Water techs, Genetics/Medicine, air/space power, cybernetics, computers/AI, nanonics, material techs, clean energy, not-so-clean energy/heavy industry/robotics, abstract physics with weapon applications...

Tech trees shapes:

Fall From Heaven has a "thready" tech tree. In it, you are encouraged to go deep down one particular branch of the tech tree, because there is very little cross-links, the cost of tech doesn't grow fast, and the later techs are more efficient than the earlier techs.

Civ4 has a "base" tech tree. There are some cross-connects, and the rate of tech cost goes up at a moderate rate.

An "Era" tech tree would have massively increasing costs and possibly serious cross-connect in the tree. This would encourage you to finish off an era.

...

To make an "Era" tech tree work, you'd want each Era to end up massively boosting the research rate of the civilizations.

Ie, if each Era had technologies that boosted your commerce production by 50%, your science by 50%, and your city sizes by 50%, the expected research growth would be on the order of 3.4x, and your production would grow by 50%.

It would be worse than this, because you could afford a larger empire with those higher ROIs.

Or the Era could boost your science production by +400%, and +50% commerce. Then your research budget would be boosted to 7.5 times each era.

Done carefully, you would have civilizations reaching the end of an era, having a massive research boost, cleaning up the past era technologies, and moving on to the next.

Yakk, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Tease! Link to a closed forum/attachment why don't you!

I can't access that link either. So fix it soon if you know what's good for ya.:trouble:

PS: I really just wanted to use that new smiley.

I'd just like to put out there that personally I think the idea of building a chassis and being able to apply stuff to it is really cool. If you could implement it well it would go a long way to capturing the flavor of SMAC and setting this mod apart from other Civ4 mods.
