Writing in Gunpowder

Cathy is playing with fire if she plans on settling where I think she is going to settle...

The barbarian city is named "Hittite" haha

Nothing new to report in Spain. Does anyone else think this map is pretty cool? I'm loving how its laid out so far.

It is very cold, I imagine much closer to the end of the last ice age than our world... but that doesn't mean its not cool!

Hm? I don't see what you are talking about, then again I'm right next to a jungle.

Up north it is very, very icy. Lots of tundra as well. Very wide swaths of uninhabitable ice fields. It seems we got selected the "icy" world. I don't mind it at all, it makes things more interesting when you have stuff like that come up. Ya'll should have seen this one game I played with my buddy. It was with the LOR mod, but it was essentially a gigantic ice world. Ice and trees literally everywhere except for a small region that "thawed" around the capital of each civ. Very crazy, but so much fun. The only problem was the world was too big and it was still normal speed, so by the time you built an army and marched it over to another civ, there was a good chance it was obsolete lol.

Almost time to write up the early history of Portugal.
The map is getting a bit more crowded and things are likely to start getting interesting.

Germany is now no longer a loose federation of independent city states, but unified as a kingdom! Too bad I don't feel like writing atm.

A messenger from the Portuguese west of the Spanish Empire attempted to enter Spanish lands to deliver a message to the Queen. He was stopped by the Barcelonan watch, on a hill overlooking Portugal, where a fort is currently being constructed.

A brief historical reminder: Queen Isabella herself has no knowledge of Portugal. The brief interactions between Portugal and Spain have been Spanish warriors and scouts, thousands of years ago, who were then killed in the wild before they were able to return home. Isabella does allow the city-states under her rule local authority to an extent, and so the people of Barcelona are the only ones who have knowledge of Portugal. Being a military folk, they generally shoot first and ask questions later. The people of Barcelona have generally always looked down on the people of Portugal, and the fort being constructed overlooking Portugal reflects their attitudes.

Needless to say, when the messenger attempted to speak to the Spanish people, he was asked his intentions. He stated he wished to bring a message seeking knowledge from the Queen, he was promptly turned away and told to return home at once, at the threat of an arrow through his skull. No word was sent to the Queen. And so the people are Barcelona began undermining the Queen's authority without her knowledge, furthering tensions between Portugal and Spain. We still do not know the Queen's true thoughts on her western neighbor, and it could be said that the people of Barcelona are itching for a real war, not against the barbarians to the south, but their old rivals to the west...

We keep a wary eye on the warlike Spanish. So far we have no reason to trust them and do not believe that the Barcelonians act independently from their queen. This is a clear case of culpable deniability, but to what we are not sure.

Hm, maybe Germany could arbitrate in this conflict as neutral mediator?

Hear ye, hear ye! No longer are the Germans but a mess of bickering city states, for now we have been united under His Majesty, King Frederick the Great. After years of turmoil and chaos he reinstated order and organization among our nation, not only by force of arms, but also by spreading the teachings of Tao, a famous philosopher who unfortunately passed away during the revolution. More than that, he proclaimed Taoism to be the official faith of the new German Kingdom, which undoubtedly alienated our Spanish allies as well as our Russian and English neighbors. But fear not, for His benevolent and open-minded Excellency has decreed that followers of other faiths are still welcomed among his lands, be they Muslims or Jews, and he extends his hand in friendship to the peoples of the world. Truly, great things are ahead for Germany!

Spoiler Behold, the Kingdom of Germany :

(OOC: It seems I will discover Calendar in 1AD, what a great coincidence. I already know what to write about it.)

Isabella finally turns to the whip, choosing to enslave all the Greek jews in the Kingdom. They were useful in quickly building a few forges to continually increase production. The Spanish archers outside the Hittite encampment grows stronger and are prepared to attack the barbarian city soon...
