Wuss Rock

Actually I was having fun with it. And I do listen to music that I consider wussy, from only one band though. It's just that most "melancholic" bands and "emo" bands seem to be melodramatic, which in turn makes them seem very insencere. You understand? My first statement was entirely out of fun. My real beef is with exaggerated emotions in order to turn a profit.

to me, wuss rock = bland pop/rock music.

Matchbox 20 is slighly less bland than a rice cake. without salt.

that's just me though- I like my music to sound interesting and original.

Hootie and the Blowfish: there's another example of wuss-rock.

I hate Matchbox 20, they are wussy rock.

I don't think all emo punk is wuss rock, as you can tell by my title. :p However, SOME emo punk is pretty bad.

Dave Matthews Band is not wuss rock, I don't get how you can say they are. You're allowed to dislike them, yes, but they don't come off as wussy to me...

Its hard for me to post in this thread since I usually use a different term for wussy that is one letter off. ;) High school does that to you, I guess. :p

Well what exactly is wussy? is it girly? soft? lulling? loving?

Anyhoo I'd probably say you'd find plenty of "wussy" music in my collection, Madonna, Kylie Minoque, Aqua, Bjork, Beck, Moby etc.. but you'd also find alot of non-wussy stuff like Led-Zeplin, Maryln Manson, The Doors etc...

wussy, to these people, is anything that people think is too quiet

meaning you can hear individual instruments and notes

You can't hear individual notes and instruments with say Voivod?

Also, I wouldn't consider Alice In Chains wussy, but they have songs like Down In a Hole and Nutshell. Fairly quiet.

Moby is borderline wussy music, but that's just because Moby himself is wussy.

Just change one letter in the words that end with "ussy" and you'll have pinned him down 100%.

If you think Matchbox is wussy then you must think DMB is wussy.

I just hate DMB in general, but once again, I think that both DMB and Matchbox are in their own genre. They don't try to be hardcore, nor do they try to be wussy - they are who they are and they sing what they sing. They don't try to be bands that they aren't.

My basic definition of wuss music are the artists who try to be someone or something that they aren't. Justin Timberlake for instance thinks he's a Michael Jackson when he doesn't even come close.

How dare you lump Madonna in that category. Anyone who has an issue with Madonna can bring that straight to me - she is and always will be an icon. Beck is good too - once again, they are themselves, they aren't trying to be something else. Aqua? You seriously listen to them? :hmm:

I agree with Mescalhead's list 100%.

BTW, I love Pink Floyd and have always hated Smashing Pumpkins.

Wuss rock = whining about your emotions. Get over it crybabies!! So what, you were dumped on! Big deal, its called life, now be a man, grow some balls and find a new chick instead of aggravating me with your pathetic, whining drivel.

All pop music is wuss, most pop country is wuss...come to think of it, 90%+ of current music is wuss rock. Death to corporate control of the music business!!

Fussy?

So what would you prefer songs be about, if not about what the songwriter wants?

Should we have more songs about how to make brownies, or maybe more like "Mother**** the police", or perhaps we can have more death metal, huh?

Just because someone writes songs about emotions doesn't mean they're a wuss. In fact, they're likely far more of a man than those people who shout down to them and call them wusses, and listen to heavily distorted metal crap about nothing at all.

Personally I like songs that deal with the limits perception and the madness of people in large numbers. There is nothing wrong with singing about the problems of existance, only so far as you parody yourself in a line or two for being so melodramatic, or give some hint on how you won't be sucked in by self-pitying emotion.

I also like songs that talk about abstract human emotions that don't have anything to do with self-important human relations and don't fall under the happy-sad spectrum. I.E. fake love songs and songs about being oppressed, unless you're a Dixie Land bluesman from the early 20th century. I also like songs that ridicule self-importance and offend egotistical and melodramatic (one and the same) people.

Most Death Metal bands are childish, but like you implied, generalizing music is a shortcut to thinking. With that said, (some) Metal has some excellent and perceptive lyrics.

IMHO

the term wuss rock does not refer to quiet volumes or lyrical content or genres. it has more to do with lack of originality and uninteresting musical parts molded together by a producer to fit the tastes of a certain demographic: people who do not actively listen, do not analyze the music, and do not like to be challenged by the music. To these people, music must serve some sort of instant gratification and sound a certain way.
Most music in the mainstream today is wuss rock or worse, wuss pop (not rock at all).

anyone who can't spell the name of their band correctly, I would call wuss rock.

add to them "tryhard rock (or tryhard any music)" and you'll find some of the music I hate.

and then add pop (which i can't in good conscience call rock at all) and my hatred list is pretty much complete :)

btb, for me a good example of emo punk is sum41. not all emo punk is bad, but there is definitely a tendency, don't be expecting any decent lyrics outta them.
