Maimonides -
RE: Italy seeming to have more African territory in version 2.5 - I'm currently playing as France, and one thing I noticed early on is the Italians are VERY aggressive in Africa - in my game, they captured Stanleyville, from Belgium, very early in the game. So as Rocoteh said, they don't START the game with more African territory, but they do seem to aggressively go after more territory. (Of course, holding on to it against a determined Allied or Soviet opponent is a WHOLE different matter. The Italians can bully the Belgians and Portugese in Africa, but they are no match, in Africa, for the Brits, US, Soviets, or even the French.)

For whatever reason, Italy AI is definitely more successful in Africa in 1939-1940 now than it was in ver. 2.4. In 1941, it seems their offensive ends with Allied counteroffensives.

BTW, hats off to you for playing as China - I would never even have considered it. I thought playing as Finland or France was a tough defensive challenge, but China trumps either! Good luck, and I'm looking forward to keeping up with your progress.

Thanks! I haven't had the guts, yet, to play an entire game as France.

I thought it might be fun to be see if Chiang Kai-Shek could reunite China rather than fleeing for Formosa as happened historically. I also wanted to try to see why both the Chinese AIs do so poorly. They are almost always wiped out in my games.

Republican Chinese. AI most aggressive. Low difficulty level.

Week 8, 1941:

-My defensive position north of Chengdu continues to hold despite losses. The Japanese Paratrooper that has been attacking me there is finally destroyed by my defenders. The fortifications plus 2 Heavy Artillery are a big help, but I'm still losing Infantry to Japanese attacks at a high rate.

Reminder: the Japanese are sending Type 97 tanks down the road from Sian toward Chengdu. They attack me there w/ 1-6 units per turn. My defending Infantry can't kill their tanks very often so they just withdraw, repair, attack & repeat. It's a battle of attrition that I'm losing so far because they are killing far more of my defenders than I am of their units.

-Another section of track is completed between Chengdu & Mangnai. I have 4 Railroad Construction crews working on this now. It should help get units from my western cities to the front faster & help defenders move west should the Germans ever arrive or the Soviets become aggressive.

-I spot 2 French Infantry in the mountains south of Japanese-held Ansi! They must have marched all the way from Damascus!!! I would have seen them if they came from Indochina. CIV III AI never fails to amaze me.

Week 9, 1941:

-The force that took Canton is now repaired & on the road toward Ningpo. Destination is a siege of Shanghai. I leave 4 Infantry behind to garrison Canton. It's behind the front lines now, but only one tile from a Japanese-controlled ocean & probably within paratrooper range of Taipe & Hainan.

-The Japanese continue to assault my position north of Chengdu. They haven't yet used their air power there for some reason which is good because I have no Flak there & am barely hanging on as it is.

-Japanese Bombers from Shanghai & Taipe continue to raid Ningpo. I haven't seen a Japanese Fighter in quite a while. I shot several of them down w/ Flak earlier & they weren't replaced.

-2 Type 97 tanks attack Ningpo. My infantry there is numerous enough to hold for a while.

-Ningpo produces another sub. This time it slips out to sea heading east. Still no sense in building improvements in a city under air bombardent.

-The British take Mogadishu from Italy!

Week 10, 1941:

-My assault force reaches Ningpo & joins more newly-built Tanks & Heavy Artillery from my western cities. They take some damage from continued Japanese air strikes.

-2 Type 97 tanks attack Ningpo, but are easily repelled my the newly-arrived forces.

-My sub moves east to scout the waters south of Okinawa.

-The Japanese offensive north of Chengu continues. They bring in another Paratrooper unit to help their tanks. The 14 Infantry I marched from the south arrives so I will be able to hold this position a bit longer.

-Another section of track between Chengdu & Mangnai is completed!

Week 11, 1941:

-The Japanese continue their attacks on Ningpo & my position north of Chengdu. Flak in Ningpo shoots down 1 of the 2 Bombers operating out of Taipe.

-The siege of Shanghai begins! I move my assault force out of Ningpo to take up positions on the hills overlooking Shanghai: 36 Infantry, 13 Heavy Artillery, 9 Tanks. I leave 4 Flak, 4 Infantry & 1 Heavy Artillery behind in Ningpo for defense. I am accutely aware that the Japanese control the ocean & are very good at amphibious assaults.

-There are now 2 French Infantry & 2 British Infatnry operating in the mountains south of Ansi. I hope they will be a distraction to the Japanese.

-My sub's captain is suprised to see that the Japanese don't have a unit occupying the Victory Point location on southern Okinawa. Then he get's another suprise: the SAME convoy that we attacked near Manilla steams up from the south. I know it's the same because they never stopped to repair the Battleship we damaged. My sub attacks targetting the 1939 Destroyer this time. The 1939 Destroyer is damaged, but we are sunk.

Week 12, 1941:

-Shanghai falls!!! The Japanese counterattacked w/ Type 97s destroying 2 of my Tanks, but they only had 3 Infantry garrisoned there so my Heavy Artillery were able to redline them for my Tanks to clean up. 2 Japanese Bombers destroyed on the ground in Shanghai! The rest of them had been shot down by my Flak.

Perhaps the best result is that I have finally crushed Japanese air power in southern China. They now only have 1 bomber based in Taipe. My southern citizens can come out of their bomb shelters for the 1st time. This will help allot.

-Khotan produces my 1st Bomber! It rebases to Chengdu to harrass the Japanese. They still don't have any aircraft operating in that area. The battle north of Chengdu continues.

Weeks 13 to 23, 1941:

I have to stop the narrative here to report a BIG problem for China.

It is at this point that I realize that I have no Coal. I can't start production on Tanks & my Railroad Construction crews can't do anything but sit in the tundra & freeze.

I never got a message saying, "You have lost your supply of Coal!" as normally happens when a trade agreement ends. I was also trading 2 Luxuries to the Soviets for about 110 GP per Turn. Checking the Trade Advisor, I find that I now have no trade routes to any other nation at all. I check the road between Kunming & Mandalay & find it intact. The only explaination I can find is that the razing of Singapore or Kuala Lumpur was the culprit. Did one of those cities have a trade route Wonder?

I check with the Soviet ambassador to find they have gone from polite to annoyed. This is very bad as it makes it more likely they will side w/ the Axis.

Looking around the map, the closest coal is west of Japanese-held Peking. I have 1 Tank in production. After that, I am screwed. The only ground units I can make are Infantry w/ an Attack rating of 2 or Flak w/ an Attack rating of 1... I can't fight all the way to Peking with 8 Tanks.

I could build a road to Soviet territory, but that would take many Turns & would invite an attack from the west. Those remote mountains are my best defense. Even if I built the road, there's no guarantee the annoyed Soviets will trade w/ me again.

I have every resource, but Coal & Rubber. I can only make Flak, Infantry & artillery.

I have 2 more ideas to solve this:

1. Take Chang Mai & it's Rubber from Thailand. I'm not sure if I will be able to build a better unit with Rubber, though. The Civilopedia is unclear. I might not even have the forces to take Chang Mai. My remaining tanks can't get through the terrain & my Infantry has a 2 Attack rating.

2. Take out the Communist Chinese. They don't have resources I need, but it would be easier to reopen trade with the Soviets & I can defend their territory better than they can.

This is a major problem for China & must be a big part of why Chinese AI always get wiped out. It may be a game-ender for me. I don't want to spend hundreds of Turns only being able to produce units with an Attack rating of 2. Even Swordsmen would be better, but they're not in this mod.

Historically, China was isolated, but the Allies were able to supply them via the Burma Road. I have built that road & kept it open, but still have NO trade routes at all.

-My Bomber in Chengdu destroys the roads over the Silks near Japanese-held Haichow after a couple of tries denying the resource to the enemy. It then begins bombing the enemy units attacking my fortifications north of Chengdu.

-My assault force rests & repairs in Shanghai & then I decide to go for Nanking since Shanghai was so lightly defended. I take Nanking, but lose 3 precious Tanks to Japanese Type 97 counterattacks. I'm down to 4 Tanks with 1 in production. After that, it becomes a defensive war for me.

I'm tempted to go for Haichow with my 5 last Tanks, but perhaps Communist Kashgar should rejoin us before I run out of an offensive capability...

-That Japanese convoy returns trying to retake Shanghai with 2 Marines, but my garrison holds. My 3rd sub catches them & finally sinks the 1939 Destroyer on it's way back to Okinawa.

Japanese AI is not repairing the vessels that escort it's Transports...

It feels good to be able to damage the enemy at sea after such a humble beginning. It has been my hope that operations like these will distract the Japanese from their highly successful offensives in the South Pacific & give my allies down there time to build their forces.

-I have Land/Air 1940, Land 1940, Light Land 1940 & Light Land 2 1940 & will have Air 1940 in 3 Turns. I'm ignoring the "Sea" techs for now. I must find a way to build an offensive ground unit.

-The U.S. continues to hold Cagliari.

-The British continue to hold the Solomon Islands. Though I keep expecting to see Rabaul or Darwin fall, it hasn't happened, yet. No activity at all from British Hong Kong.

-I haven't seen another Allied ship in the Pacific since the British unit tried to penetrate the Formosa Straights many Turns ago.

-Africa has been interesting to watch so far. Despite a few recent losses, Italy has done very well there. Here's a list of the African cities currently under Italian control: Benghazi, Tobruk, Addis Abeba, Nampula, Beira, Maputo, Lubango & Huambo. I've never seen Italy AI do so well in southern Africa.

-NONE of the unaligned nations have gone to war yet. I set AI agression high to avoid this, but they won't fight at all so far. Of course, all eyes are on USSR. They can swing the war one way or the other.

Maimonides: Please continue telling what happens - very exciting to read - its almost an AAR - After Action Report like done with a lot of hearts of Iron games.....please continue the struggle - dont abandon the Chinese - they are counting on you! ;)

good luck!

This is one of the greatest thing I've ever come across... (QUAD core  ) But anyway, it runs fast enough on my comp.... I'm not too much for WWII, but I enacted Poland and "Denmark Norway" and set the date to jan, 1939, among other things so, it's fun. Hey, great job on it though. Europe is litterly littered with cities and the scenario has tons of units.

Oh. How do you enable mutual protection pacts over just rights of passage?

Thanks! Will do.

Oh. How do you enable mutual protection pacts over just rights of passage?

The MPPs for this scenario are already set up. There is a locked MPP between the Allied nations & one between the Axis nations.

Republican China. AI most aggressive. Low difficulty level.

Ignore my earlier statements about Italy's success in Africa. I now think that those cites in southern Africa I listed as Italian were actually Portuguese. Those countries' colors are very similar & hard for me to tell apart. Sorry about the confusion. At the end of Week 23, 1941, Italy held Tobruk, Benghazi & Addis Abeba in Africa.

Week 24, 1941

-I rebuild a road between Ningpo & Shanghai & am suprised to find that I have a trade route to the USSR again!. I have no idea how because all the roads beyond there go through Japanese-held territory. I contact Stalin & trade my Furs for his Coal once again, but he won't renew the Luxuries for money trades we had earlier.

-Now that I can build Tanks, I change my cities' production from Bombers & Heavy Artillery to Tanks.

-Emboldened by access to Coal, I send my assault force in Nanking against Haichow leaving behind a garrison of 4 Infantry & 1 Heavy Artillery. Assault force now consists of 27 Infantry, 13 Heavy Artillery & 5 Tanks. Operating in the grasslands of eastern China is much more dangerous as Japan's Type 97s can maneuver easily & pound me.

-The units defending the fortifications between Chengdu & Haichow are no longer needed there now that my offensive on Haichow has begun. I send the 4 Flak back to Chengdu in case the Japanese develop a longer range bomber. The 1 Heavy Artillery & 7 Infantry leave their defenses & move into enemy territory in support of the attack on Haichow.

-My sub had repaired in Shanghai & set out again for Okinawa. Making no contact there, it set course to scout Iwo Jima. It arrived there this week finding 1 Japanese unit garrisoned.

-Japan takes Rabaul! They are doing very well in the South Pacific so far.

-The fighting north of Chengdu continues, but has become a stalemate. Japan can't dislodge my defenders & I can't counterattack.

Week 25, 1941:

-Japanese Type 97s counter attack around Haichow. I lose a Tank & 2 Infantry.

-My artillery responds by redlining a Type 97 caught in the open & destroying a road south of Haichow so the enemy won't be able to move as efficiently.

This results in me losing all my trade routes again! I have no idea how my trade route could have existed on enemy territory... At least the cities that started making Tanks last week will be able to finish. I wish I had remembered to order my Railroad Construction crews back to work.

Week 26, 1941:

-I am able to move my assault force to the gates of Haichow.

-One of those French Infantry in the mountains south of Ansi reappears. The unit is redlined & probably headed to my territory to heal.

-The Flak in Nangpo shoots down the last Japanese Bomber flying out of Taipe.

-The fighting north of Hangchow continues.

-Nanning, Kweilin & Liuzhou are racing to complete all city improvements. They are no longer under air attack & there is no longer a threat from Canton. When their improvements are completed, they will switch to military production. Our Workers are now improving the terrain of southern China without fear of attack.

-We finish Air 1940, but we gain no new aircraft designs. We begin researching Sea 1940 only because it's a prerequisite for Land 1941.

Week 27, 1941:

-Haichow falls! After heavy bombardment by our Heavy Artillery, our remaining 4 Tanks defeat 1 Type 97 & 3 Infantry to take the city. 2 Japanese Fighters that were based in Haichow are destroyed on the ground. I wasn't aware they were there. Their Fighters stopped bombing me many weeks ago.

-The 11 infantry that were defending Wuhan are no longer needed there so I order them to march to Haichow. Wuhan's worker begins a road linking Wuhan to Haichow. This will help reinforcements reach my coastal offensive quicker.

-Chengdu completes a Hydro Plant & begins work on another Heavy Artillery.

-That convoy that I have been engaging appears again off the coast near Nanking. The sub near Iwo Jima is recalled to try to attack it.

-I send a Worker from Kunming to enter British territory & improve their terrain. I have noticed that they have some resources without roads & could use a better road network between some of their cities. I'll need the british in India to be strong enough to protect my backdoor if the Germans reach Asia or the Soviets enter the war against us. The Worker begins construction around Mandalay.

Week 28, 1941:

-The Japanese convoy steams south to Shanghai, but doesn't dissembark any troops. Our sub, racing from the east to try to catch them, reaches the waters south of Okinawa.

-The Japanese counterattack Haichow with Type 97s destroying 2 of our Tanks & 1 Infantry.

-Finding no units worth bombing, I order the Bomber in Chengdu to raid Sian. That was a mistake as Japanese fighters shoot it down.

-Haichow is building a Worker as it is now clear that our roads must be connected to Japanese territory to have a trade network. I can't understand why or how this is possible.

Week 29, 1941:

-1 Type 97 counterattacks Haichow from Tsingtao destroying another of my precious Tanks. Our Heavy Artillery responds & our Tank destroys it & withdraws back into Haichow.

-My western cities produce some Tanks, but can't make any more due to lack of Coal. They begin producing Heavy Artillery & Bombers. The new Tanks motor for Haichow.

-The enemy convoy continues south into the Formosa Straights. Our sub is heading down the east coast of Formosa hoping to cut them off.

Week 30, 1941:

-Tobruk falls to the British at last! I was beginning to think it would never happen. Italy only has Benghazi in North Africa now.

-My assault force leaves behind 4 Infantry & 1 Heavy Artillery to garrison Haichow & moves to the outskirts of Tsingtao. The remaining Tank waits for reinforcements in Haichow.

-7 Type 97s move toward my fortifications north of Chengdu. Our Heavy Artillery gives them a beating.

-Our sub finds the enemy convoy near hainan & attacks damaging the cruiser before going to the bottom.

-Ningpo produces another sub which heads south hoping to finish off that Cruiser.

Week 31, 1941:

-Our assault force bombards Tsingtao.

-5 of the newly-built Tanks arrive in Haichow.

-The Type 97s attack our fortifications north of Chengdu, but are repelled. They lose 2 tanks. We lose 3 Infantry. Their damaged tanks withdraw toward Tsingtao instead of Sian which will be great for me next week...

Week 32,`1941:

-Benghazi falls to the British! Italy has only Addis Abeba in Africa now.

-5 damaged Type 97s mentioned last week enter Tsingtao.

-Our assault force bombards Tsingtao again & the Tanks in Haichow are unleashed! The timing could not have been better! We have just enough Tanks to kill all the redlined defenders & take Tsingtao!!! We've never been able to kill so many enemy tanks in one battle before! General Kai-Shek smiles for the 1st time in years.

-Our defensive force north of Chengdu advances into Japanese territory hoping to draw a Japanese attack there rather than at Tsingtao. The Tanks repairing at tsingtao are currently irreplaceable.

Except for British Hong Kong, all of southern China is now reunited. We will hold our offensive while we try to obtain Coal through trade again. The next Japanese-held target must be Sian & there's no good way for us to get there other than slugging it out with superior Japanese forces in the hills. We must find a source of Coal...

you are doing well - the generalissimo will surely throw medals at you :)
Now at least you know that you will have to repair the infrastructure/road you damaged and refrain from destroying any until you have taken back all of China and possibly get control of Korea - that tradelink with the Soviets is really needed unless you at some point can gain coal in manchuria or whereever.....

keep up the pressure - with actual history in mind you are doing VERY well! - if the Japanese arent carefull they will be the ones to evacuate to taiwan when you push them off Korea :D

USSR - SID - V2.5 - Wk 23 1941

Distaster!

The Great Patriotic War is lost!

A massive multipronged German blitzkreig smashed my defences around Vilnius and punched a gaping hole for 4 separate stacks to charge through. Like a house of cards my poorly defended interior cities had nothing to save them and all tumbled before 137 PzIII e/g/h's and a disturbing number of elite infantry and panzergrenadiers. They obviously got their elite status fighting the defeated French and Yugo's!
Finland weighed into the bargain in the north and overwhelmed my pitiful troops with a stack of 81 infantry units and 36 Light Tanks.
I sent 40 T-34's and 10 KV-1's against occupied Odessa in a Bulge style offensive. This did nothing to distract Germany and I discovered to my detriment that multiple panzergrendier units were holding Odessa very tightly. The loss of over half my tanks here left little hope when another column of German panzers arrived from Austria to destroy my last offensive hope.
Italy even mopped up my redline units and hampered my lines of communication around Smolensk frustrating my last attempts at resistance.
Moscow fell with very little resistance and even my industrial powerhouse behind the Urals could not produce enough units for any sort of defence.
The Japanese attack came and was thwarted by 4 separate columns of 10 T-34's that captured more territory. It wasn't cheap with the Japanese defence extracting a heavy toll. My lines are straighter in China but I will not have enough units to send to the West for attack. The Japanese units are far too numerous.
The Allies also continue to damage me in Persia with a horrendous heavy bomber offensive never allowing me to build up any strength for a push south.
Even a US task force of Carriers bombards my Yakutsk possessions!
The industrial heart of Russia is lost to the Germans. It is only a matter of time before they roll over the whole of western Russia and total domination. Shortly they will turn my captured industrial cities against the allies. Victory is assured for the Axis.

you are doing well - the generalissimo will surely throw medals at you :)

He did. One left a bump on my head, though.

Am trying. If nothing else, I should be helping my allies in the South Pacific by distracting the Japanese on mainland Asia.

Sorry... Sounds like you had too many enemies & were fighting on too many fronts at once. It's a very bad idea to fight the Allies AND the AXIS at the same time. Perhaps you can make peace with the Allies, go defensive in the east against Japan & slowly regain ground against the Axis in the west, but it will be very difficult.

@ Maimonides - very interesting report!
Would you please post some pictures?

Tomislav

I've never tried posting a screenie on CFC. I'll see what I can do.

Republican China. AI most aggressive. Low difficulty level.

Week 33, 1941:

-Sub #4 arrives off Hainan, but can't spot the enemy convoy.

-Our assault force settles in at Tsingtao to rest & repair. We can see Japanese Infantry moving up western Korea from Pusan towards Seoul.

-Khotan produces a Bomber. It rebases to Tsingtao. Maybe we can harrass western Korea now. It can also help damage counterattacking enemy armor.

-Khotan begins training another Worker. It's time to build a road to Kashgar...

-For the 1st time since the war started, the Japanese do not attack me this week. Their loss of armor at Tsingtao & planes at Shanghai seems to have bought us a temporary reprieve.

-A Worker from Chengdu moves to repair the road between Chengdu & Haichow. We had to destroy it in early 1940 to slow down enemy attacks.

Week 34, 1941:

-Japanese Type 97 appears north of Tsingtao.

-Bomber in Tsingtao tries to destroy the roads in western Korea, but misses. My thinking is that the Japanese may be sending reinforcements from their home islands through Pusan. Taking out those roads will slow them down.

-Haichow is building a Worker to repair the road that will reconnect my trade route.

-Sub #4 continues south from Hainan looking for that enemy convoy. The Battleship was repaired when spotted earlier so the AI is repairing escort vessels.

-We finish 2 more Bombers & rebase them to Amoy. We will build up there for a possible invasion of Formosa.

-French Infantry unit that was operating in the mountains south of Ansi is now healed & marching toward Khotan. The other French Infantry & 2 British Infantry that were operating up there have been MIA for several turns & are assumed lost in battle. A hero's welcome is prepared in Mangnai for that valiant, surviving French unit.

Week 35, 1941:

-The British take Fakfak in western New Guinea!

-Our assault force in Tsingtao is repaired & heads out for the front north of Chengdu. They leave behind a garrison of 4 Infantry & 1 Heavy Artillery. It's a light garrison for a frontline city, but we have a wide cultural border so we can see the enemy coming from far away & we will need every man to make gains toward Sian.

-Lhasa finishes the last Tank we had in production before we lost our source of Coal. It motors toward the front north of Chengdu.

-Bomber in Tsingtao attacks roads in western Korea, but misses again. The cross-eyed bombadier is sent to the rock quarries in Kunming.

-Sub #4 enters the waters near Saigon. Still no sign of the enemy at sea. Still no activity spotted in French Indochina.

-Bomber based in Chengdu damages the Type 97 that crossed out border north of Tsintao. No other Japanese attacks in China this week!:)

-Several British Infantry units begin marching over the Himalayas into China again. One is trying to march from Kathmandu towards Lhasa! That's not a trip I'd want to take on foot. A couple of them are smart enough to use the Burma Road this time.

Week 36, 1941:

-The British take Addis Abeba! We'd like those guys if they weren't occupying Hong Kong. The Axis has now been totally booted from Africa!

-The Tank from Lhasa & the assault force from Tsingtao reach the frontlines north of Chengdu. Including the troops that were defending the fortifications there, the assault force now consists of over 30 Infantry, 16 Heavy Artillery & 5 Tanks.

-Bomber from Chengdu tries to bomb a road notheast of Sian, but is shot down by enemy fighters.

-The road between Chengdu & Haichow is repaired & our trade route reopens. I speak to the Soviet ambassador & we trade Furs for their Coal. They are annoyed with us & won't make any other trades.

-Having Coal again, our military production is switched from Heavy Artillery & Bombers back to Tanks. Our Railroad Construction crews are ordered back to work between Chengdu & Mangnai.

-Sub #4 moves south to view the ruins of Singapore. Still no other shipping spotted.

-Ningpo completes Sub #5 & it heads south to join up w/ Sub #4. Ningpo begins building an Aquaduct so it's population can grow. It hasn't been attacked since the last enemy bomber in Taipe was shot down so it's time to start improvements.

-Kunming sends another Worker into British territory to build terrain improvements.

Weeks 37 to 43, 1941:

-Our assault force fights it's way slowly to the outskirts of Sian. The 5 Tanks hang back while the Heavy Artillery force the enemy to withdraw for repairs & the Infantry protects them. The enemy has 4 Type 97s, 1 Paratrooper & an unknown number of Infantry operating out of Sian. My Tanks have to withraw a long way to repair. The going is very slow & we've lost 7 Infantry so far.

-Sub #4 heads through the Malacca Straights & around Java. They spot:

1. 1 damaged Japanese Marine unit healing in northern Malaysia.

2. 1 British Tansport sailing w/o escort near Japanese-held Padang.

3. 3 French Cruisers steaming around Malaysia.

4. Japanese Infantry garrisoning Palembang & Padang.

-Sub #5 reaches Batavia spotting elite Japanese Infantry there. They also spotted a Type 97 tank on Borneo in the hills far north of Japanese-held Banjarmasin.

-The British Infantry units from India march across our territory toward Japanese-held northern China. Looks like they intend to fight this time. 2 of them enter Japanese territory north of Tsingtao.

-The Bomber in Tsingtao has a better bombadier now & destroys the roads south of Seoul. They then batter a Type 97 that crosses our border forcing it to withdraw.

The siege of Sian continues...

Yup. I still don't understand how a trade network can exist over roads owned by a nation I'm at war with. I don't remember seeing that outside of this scenario.

I have a long way to go to secure my own source of coal.

For all of India and China, the only (initial) trading route is the 1 road that leads into Soviet Russia (at Russian city of Vladivostok), which connects to Europe. Since in WW2 Global, building harbors and airports does not provide trading ability, the cities which show airport icons next to them have ability to trade with an air route. No cities (at all) in India or Europe have an airport except for the British city of Katmandu. But Katmadu has no roads connecting to any other city. I am not sure if an ally airport would allow you to trade with others ??? (I am pretty sure it does not) If it does though, you could run a worker back there and build a road to that city. But you are correct, if you are at war with a nation, you can not trade through their roads.

In my game as Japan, if I went to war with Soviet Russia, my cities in China are completely cut off from trading with anyone.

So you should check to see if British city Katmandu has a road connecting to the rest of India.

Rocoteh,

just a quick question. As in v 2.5 the AI does not use workers to transform their territory, did you balance that disadvantage regarding production? Did you give them a production level that can match a fully worked over territory like mine?

Thanks and have a great day,
aceault

aceault,

After the release of version 2.5 it become clear that AI will not
use worker units at all if one worker action is removed.
This problem will be solved in version 2.6.

Best Regards

Rocoteh

I was thinking... An interesting way to add flamethrowers to the US arsenal (since they were used primarily against Japan.. would be to have them be like a bombard unit, with a semi-low bombard attack strength (say 8, so they would not be as effective against tougher armored units, but more effective against infantry), with a high rate of fire (6 or so) and lethal land, and say a defense of 4. And produced by a US city every 15-20 turns. This would make them effective vs. most infantry and give them the ability to take out, but not as effective against most armored units (to make it somewhat realistic). Low defense for the unit is realistic, since a flamethrower is only effective when used in coordinated attack situations. The only problem would be if the AI would use a unit like this effectively.

tom2050,

The reason there are no flamethrowers is that the scenario is on
the division level.
However one can always make an exception and I will consider the idea.

Hornblower,

Fighting a four front war on SID level is very hard!
Maybe the only hope was a ceasefire with Britain.

Anyway it was a very interesting playtest to follow.

Thank you and welcome back.

tom2050,

It will be interesting to follow when Germany AI will invade Soviet and how
that turns out.

When it comes to the Russian Campaign Germany AI most of the time will
fail to achieve anything that is near the historical result.

Concerning an invasion of America:

Maybe the best solution is to invade South America and establish and strong
position there.
I duobt its possible to invade the US West Coast area.

Any info on the current US strenght?

Thank you and welcome back.

Maimonides,

After reading your reports I have decided to add one coal and one rubber
resource in China with regard to version 2.6.

Your analyse is probably correct:

The lack of these resources will trigger an early (to early) collapse of China
when its AI-controlled.

I think your playtest is going very vell and I hope you will continue it.

The fall of Shanghai was an important victory.

Thank you and welcome back.

Japan - SID difficulty, AI most aggressive, AI Workers enabled, ironman rules (no reloads)

Week 34, 1940 - What is going on! Mexico declares war on US (although Mexico actually participated with the US in operations against Germany). There goes the idea of taking Panama! China, Great Britain, France, Netherlands, and Belgium declare war on Mexico. This is becoming a 'true' World War, with only a few South American, and select other countries not involved. US takes and razes Monterrey (Mexico). I happen to have an Otsu sub right off the coast of San Diego (as well as several others up north), I am
bringing it down to Mexican Santa Rosalia to gain communications with them. I will provide money to Mexico to help them repel the US in any way they can.
Week 35, 1940 - Took Rangoon (Great Britain-India). Declare war on Thailand. Came in range of Mexican city Santa Rosalia and provided 50 gold/turn. I forgot I had a troop in Thailand when I declared war, hopefully it doesn't have any profound effects on my trading reputation.
Week 36, 1940 - Italy, Germany, and Finland declare war on Thailand. Took Makassar (Netherlands). Took Bangkok (Thailand). Spain asked for peace treaty, declined. Per Military Advisor, my military is average to the US and Soviet Russia, weak compared to Great Britain and Germany.
Week 37, 1940 - Portugal declares war on Germany. Now that I have Oil, I can finally build the older Type 95 Ha-Go! (Not that I would want to anymore, it seems odd that this older unit requires more resources to build than the Type 97 Chi-Ha, especially since Oil is not readily available in the beginning, and trading with Germany for Oil is very expensive... Perhaps the Type 97 should require Oil, and the Type 95 should not, this would make more sense, but would make it more difficult for Japan). US takes Campeche (Mexico). Took Chiang Mai (Thailand). ***Thailand Defeated***.
Week 38, 1940 - US takes Mexico City (Mexico). Took Dacca (Great Britain-India). Even if the US controls all of Mexico, I could still take Panama City, bring about 20 workers and set up mass defenses by the 2nd turn, and possibly try to fight my way up Mexico. The biggest disadvantage is the fact that the Type 97 Chi-Ha does not have the blitz ability. Traded spices to Soviet Russia for 2210 gold! Yes, they have that much money! My thrust into India has been slowed by the fact that I am building each city up to the
maximum extent before building military units, the reason being is that if I plan on making any sort of assault on the US, I am going to need as much production capability as possible (quantity over quality). By the beginning of 1941, most of China will have all factories, hydro, coal, and manufacturing plants. Then I will be able to mass produce forces for a full year in preparation (while continuing the India, and possibly Australian conquest).
Week 39, 1940 - France, China, Great Britain, US, Netherlands and Belgium sign a peace treaty with Portugal. US takes Veracruz (Mexico). US takes Managua (Mexico). Lissabon (Portugal) taken and razed by unknown. Took Fakfak (Netherlands).
Week 40, 1940 - Soviet Russia declares war on Turkey. Took Cherrapunji (Great Britain-India). The first of a long line of Otsu subs (and they will keep going at 2-3 more per turn) are heading out towards the tip of India on their long route to the Mediterrean.
Week 41, 1940 - Took Calcutta (Great Britain-India). All of the Light Coastal Flotillas of Soviet Russia are heading out near the Japanese mainland (probably heading over to Turkey). Well, Germany has 5 BismarckCs now, hopefully they can hold on to them. Italy still has no navy. I am surprised that Spain has not lost any cities to the allies yet.
Week 42, 1940 - Took Kuala lumpur (Great Britain). Soviet Russia takes Erzurum (Turkey). Bad for Germany if Soviet Russia takes all of Turkey, since Turkey was a buffer state, in which no units can pass (due to Istanbul). Declare war on Norway-Denmark.
Week 43, 1940 - Soviet Russia declares war on Germany. I declare war on Soviet Russia from Mutual Protection Pact, along with Italy and Finland. Soviet Russia takes Trabzon (Turkey). Took Benares (Great Britain-India). Funny, Soviet Russia gave me over 2000 gold for spices, now that deal is over... free money. Top Priority is to take British Katmandu, and connect a road to it, in order to connect China luxury resources to Japan mainland via airport. My chinese cities have more than 11 luxuries, they run off the screen, I cant figure out what they are or where they are located, but fine with me.

Strengths:
Soviet Russia - 490 Armored Units, 380 Infantry, 41 ships/110 subs/20 transports, 38 bombers/39 fighters
Italy - 17 Armored Units, 62 Infantry, 0 ships/0 subs, 0 bombers/0 fighters
Germany - 146 Armored Units, 136 Infantry, 7 ships/2 subs/3 transports, 10 bombers/52 fighters
Great Britain - 170 Armored Units, 459 Infantry, 85 ships/9 subs/26 transports/3 carriers, 18 bombers/85 fighters
France - 3 Armored Units, 89 Infantry, 3 ships/32 subs/1 transport, 3 bombers/0 fighters
US - 142 Armored Units, 374 Infantry, 38 ships/3 carriers/8 transports, 26 bombers/39 fighters
Finland - 10 Armored Units, 81 Infantry, 8 ships, 4 bombers/1 fighter
Japan - 31 Armored Units, 179 Infantry, 75 ships/46 subs/17 transports/6 carriers, 20 bombers/48
fighters

in the imperialism deluxe scenario there are "phoney" wonders in each city to prevent the AI from raizing the cities - couldnt it be used in this scenario? - in Santander its the santander port - in guatemala its the ruins there - near the capital etc - they dont really give much bonus but they prevent the AI from raizing the cities....raizing lissabon is...well a bit ehhhhhh...

CCDK,

Well in fact WW2-Global was the first scenario that used
"phoney wonders" to prevent AI from razing cities.
However there is a limit on how many wonders that can be placed.
That limit have been reached.

There are not much infrastructure in Mexico, so a US offensive should
move slow.

A very good deal.

tom2050

Agree.
An invasion of US will require a strong industrial base.

Yes considering AI likes raiding coastal cities its a surpise that no
Spanish city have been lost.

The stats indicates that Germany AI will be in severe trouble soon.

The US forces are strong but should still be possible to deal with.

Thank you for the report and welcome back.

Here is the dilemma...
If coal is provided to China, as in the previous discussions, this would give the Chinese the tank without needing to trade, which has similar stats (14.7.2) with blitz (although 2x more expensive than the Type 95). Type 95 and Type 97 do not have blitz.

I made a mistake in my comment above, it was Rubber that was required to make the Type 95, not Oil.

If it was switched to Rubber being required to get the Type 97 instead of the Type 95, this would make it more difficult for Japanese conquests in India and China, but would make it a necessity to secure these strategic resources, just as was the actual case.

Of course if Rubber was eliminated from being required to build the Type 95, players would still probably build them initially when many of Japan's cities are not well built up.

As it is now, unless someone trades for rubber, the Type 95 will never be built, since it is most valuable only in the beginning game.

tom2050,

OK I see.

Notes have been taken.
I will see which solution I can find for this problem with regard to version 2.6.
