WWI Scenario

I've been playing for ~50 turns now and I've seen no problems.
This is already a ton of fun! I just enjoy these realistic, historical games.

I've a couple of questions too: what difficulty level have you optimized this scenario for, nokmirt? I'm testing this on King now, and the only challenge would appear to be happiness. I'm guessing one has to rely heavily on social policies for happiness as there aren't many happiness buildings..

Then a thought on the realism dimension;
I'm aware these mods take a huge amount of time to develop, but could it be implemented somehow that the railroad tech would come earlier? I mean, in 1883 there was quite a lot of rail coverage already, so it would be more realistic if you were able to build rail from the start.. Also the successors for the wooden frigates and sotls - I can understand why you have locked out the battleships, but maybe a nerfed version could be allowed? Just lower the stats a bit and call it 'dreadnought class' or similar? As we know, wooden war ships were quickly made obsolete in the advent of steam engines and turret cannons.. Which is what was then used in WWI era. Just a thought ;)

Thank you for this mod! I'm really enjoying it!

edit: There seems to be one bug. I'm getting automated declaration of war and making peace - the civ I'm playing will DoW others and make peace with them randomly and without asking; the diplomatic conversation screen doesn't even pop up, I just get the 'beginning of a turn' notions on the RH side of my screen. Weird?

The scenario is set for Prince.

I got that too, not sure what it is. What happened to me was that Italy DoWed on me. I realized I was at war with a CS nearby, so I was able to make peace with it. Suddenly the war with Italy ended without any peace agreement. It was weird. For the most part things are working pretty good even so.

As far as the wooden ships and railroad. I have been thinking about that as well. Maybe I can replace the frigate with another ship. Frigates are rather useless in this game. Ironclads kill them with ease.

Ok this is what I decided to do. I added the techs dynamite, fertilizer, and railroad to everyone except for the Kabyle Berbers, who will sadly fall even further behind in tech. :lol: I am deleting the frigate completely (it is rather useless for this scenario) and replaced any frigates on the map with ironclads. Ironclads will be the mainstay of fleets until battleships are researched and a naval arms race begins. The ironclads will represent ships that were being developed during this time. The drawback of having only ironclads is no shore bombardment until BBs are researched. Fleets were generally built at this time to contend with other fleets for the most part anyway, during the time period earlier in this scenario. This is the best I can do without adding more techs etc. However, I am convinced these are necessary changes and should work out quite well.

The only thing I have left is to remove frigates and create a mappack mod again then I will post it in the OP.

I look at this BNW techtree and it just drives me nuts. Railroad should be in the industrial era. Indirect fire for artillery was not put into use until the Boer War in 1899. The British had been researching the idea starting in the 1890s. I suppose in this scenario we get it faster, or we can research dynamite and railroad after. It is probably best to give all civs fertilizer. Then they can research dynamite and railroad after. I really don't mind waiting for railroad. The designers should have thought how these things developed in real history. We'll just think of the roads as early railroads. Oh well it is just a game. No big deal I guess. :)

So all civs get fertilizer and the useless frigate will be removed.

Frigates will obsolete with Dynamite.

Code:
                <Update>
			<Where Type="UNIT_FRIGATE"/>
			<Set ObsoleteTech="TECH_DYNAMITE"/>
		</Update>

Still getting a strange diplomacy bug. My first turn it said that Rome and Panama City made peace with Germany. So, I looked to see if I would be able to make them DoW each other. They had the ability to go to war, even though there should have been 10 turns of peace between them. The other odd thing was that Italy is not even allied with Panama City. Must be something in worldbuilder that is screwed up. There are a lot of bugs in worldbuilder that have never been fixed properly. So, I'll have to live with it, because I am pretty sure they are done messing with Civ 5. Other than that it has been quite interesting, although the AI civs are crazy and DoWed each other before building an army. Greece and Russia DoWed me as well. Greece had one cannon...oh boy! And Russia sent a worker in. Maybe in a later war they'll scare me a bit better.

Nice! I can't wait to do some more tests on this scenario. your improvements also sound like they will work really well. Finding the right balance can always be tricky, but OTOH, if the later units (Artillery, Battleship) turn out to be operpowered, they shouldn't be too complicated to nerf down a bit. This all is going to be huge fun too :)

As for the war/peace bug, I've been getting quite a bit of that, but I didn't get far enough yet to actually want war so I don't know if I will be able to keep the war 'on' or if it will auto-switch off randomly...

I have had some wars that lasted. One was against Germany and they took Prague from me, which I didn't care for. The Germans had tons of units, so I had Russia and France declare war on them. A few turns later the Germans offered me white peace. I built up a bit DoWed them and took Prague back, along with Munich and Nuremberg. The Germans were then mostly gobbled up by the UK, who were at war with Germany as well. Russia took Konigsberg and France took Stuttgart. They barely were holding on by the time I ended the game to work on the scenario more.

Oh, I have nerfed the battleship down some, but kept artillery the same. I was going to look into the diplomacy bug, not sure what anyone has done about that though.

Ah one more thing...another bug is the stop purchasing land near me diplomacy bug. That is a worldbuilder issue and annoying too.

I was looking at my worldbuilder and to fix diplomacy I have to erase all my civs and start again. I'll have to add all the cities back in, so it will take a bit of work. This may resolve the diplomacy issue, because when I deleted my preplaced CSs, the team numbers under diplomacy did not delete. That's why things are fouled up I think.

I am going to list changes as I go.

1. Suez Canal is opened.
2. Egypt under British rule since 1882
3. Each civ gets a garrison of riflemen or cavalry, sometimes both.
4. Replaced Songhai with Morocco for Berber Cavalry and a BNW civ
5. Added Chateaus for France, must be adjacent to a luxury resource.
6. Add Kasbahs for Kabyle Berbers
7. Added Serbia
8. Added in Stadiums for extra happiness building options.
9. Changed unhappiness per city from 3 to 2 for more happiness and the ability to have larger empires.
10. Adjusted some resources on the map.

Map coming along good, only Ottomans, Arabians and Berbers left to finish. This is going to be awesome. Should be finished tomorrow.

I need some playtesters to try out this scenario. To make sure there is no crashes or other issues. If you want to try it out and give me a heads up about your game let me know. Thanks.

The map is all set just playtesting. Everything is running smoothly. No diplomacy bugs that I have seen.

I would like to do some further testing on this scenario, but I don't see the latest files on this thread - can you please show me a download link so I can run some tests.

...however it may take a couple of days before I can actually do the tests as I'm a bit busy atm...

But thanks for your great work - this is a very interesting scenario for sure.

Yes certainly TurboJ. Right now I have been messing with the AI handicap setting. I had all the civs on prince, and it seemed they were not building up all that great. Now I am trying it out with the civs set on warlord. I am playing on king with my civ. Other than that the scenario seems to play smooth. I have not noticed any diplomacy bugs or anything. The one annoying thing I did notice is that the stupid Morocco AI keeps sending settlers halfway across the continent. That's the Civ 5 AI for you. :lol:

BTW I am working on a Pacific War scenario which I will be completing after this one is done. When I get the map done and I am ready for testing, you can certainly help me out if you want too. It will be awhile yet though.

Anyway here is the updated mappack.

I would like to do some further testing on this scenario.

I made a couple of changes...

1. I added to settlers to Russia for expansion and so they have a potential chance of getting more coal.
2. Ship of the line, privateer and frigates obsolete at steam power.

These are the last changes I will make until I complete an entire game. I will write some notes during play.

Here is the update. Use this for playtesting. Have fun.

Cool! I'll report when I get a change to run a test or two!

My game is going along pretty good. I am on turn 117 with no problems.

50 turns and no bugs so far. But on diplomany and some messages, I see civ names 'Rome', 'Huns' and 'Morocco' - on other messages they show correctly..

But no problems have been seen - everything is working ok and no sign of the war/peace bug either.

I changed the civ names in worldbuilder. There must be a way to change that, but my modding skills are rather limited. However, I am going to look into it.

One other thing I am thinking of changing the default AI handicap to chieftain. On warlord the AI does put up a fight on king. However, all in all it seems to lag behind in most categories, production, science etc. It could be I am just getting too good for king. I don't know.

Okay, I got some help with changing civ and leader names. I added civ and leader name changes via xml. So, that should take care of any issues with the civ and leader names. When I post the mod after I am done playtesting this game, they will be included in it.

New download link is in the OP.

hi

I need were to download this scenario? when I click the link no file to save?

The mod file is in the first post of this thread. It won't let me upload it in this post, but it is in the OP and you should be able to download it. If you have problems I could send it to you in a private message or email it to you. Let me know.

Looks sweet, nice that Serbia made it in (I'm not a serb :D ).

Gonna try it and report. Is it in Steam Workshop too or just download here?

I just downloaded it here for now. Thank you for any input you can give me though. I am not a Serb either, but figured they should be added.
