Interesting that you can now set your extraction point, and that in some missions are you actually expected to escape. I like that idea.

Bradford looks fat. Too many tins of sausages methinks.

After the fall of XCOM, he survived in the ruins of the old base, growing fat off of all the muton and chryssalid corpses that were still being stored there.

I'm very much looking forward to it - given that there are a few games coming out soon or in development that have piqued my interest (Total War: Warhammer, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, Company of Heroes 2's next faction expansion, the next Age of Empires II expansion, Crusader Kings II Horse Lords, The Bard's Tale IV, a muted interest in Rising Tide, and at least in principle Master of Orion Redux although previews so far are unpromising) it's quite an achievement that XCOM 2 was the game I was most looking forward to.

Was, because I missed this announcement last month:

    http://www.polygon.com/features/2015/5/18/8615339/cossacks-3-announcement-release-date-gsc-stalker

XCOM 2 is still the game I'm looking forward to more than any non-Cossacks game, however.

Looks very nice if you ask me. I agree with him that graphically the game looks as though it is very slick and polished. The customisation options also look pretty cool too. It is clear this is a game designed for PC. The menu systems and stuff no longer look clunky and ugly to cater for the console markets. Only areas of concern:

    - A little uneasy that certain research paths are now “mysterious” – as in you don’t know what you are getting. They tried that with diplomacy in civ 5 and look where that got them.
    - Not too sure on the inherent randomness they are going for. I don’t think this makes for a necessarily good strategy game.

Other than that though I am pretty hyped. I would just like to see a decent video now of the combat. The first one we got looked all grainy and horrible. It is fairly clear from this video that the graphics are much more polished.

I am also pleased that they have also gone down the customisation option for in game personnel. That adds an interesting dimension to it I think.

Well, the dev mentions that in Enemy Unknown, players quickly found the best path to winning. So, I am thinking that this design decision is meant to prevent players from always beelining to the best tech path.

See in Long War there are many many different paths to victory, and each of them are viable, so it sort of depends on what you want to prioritise. Although if you neglect one then you will undoubtedly regret it. Thats good game design in my opinion, but it is difficult to implement especially when you have not even released something yet. Maybe thats just a necessary aspect to be added by modding later.

Is defense stat gone on soldiers? In all the videos and pictures I have seen saw nothing on it.

Isnt defence a long war stat? Personally i always thought it a slightly weird acting mechanic. it was difficult to see how it fed into damage reduction.

Playing Xcom: The Long War on a terror mission. I just watched a zombie come out of a door way, walk into the open back of a van, walk back out of it and back through the doorway.

I wasn't sure what thread to post this in.

One thing that scares me a little is the lack of choice in soldier ability tree. Especially when you compare the trees to Long War's trees.

To be honest, even in long war, there is realistically only a choice between two different perks. The third one is more of a filler. There are very few choices where all 3 are really good. Invariably they are supplemented by increased to core stats like will or aim.

I think we have to accept that xcom2 will not be longwar +1. BUT, we can expect that the developers of Long war will have far more tools at their disposal to make longwar 2.

That's fair. I have found instances where a third choice works to round out certain soldiers, particularly after you've already developed your super specialists types. I do hope that mystery class for XCOM2 is something special though.

I will post this here since I'm sure others will be interested, If Xcom 2 doesn't meet your fancy the Long War team is baking "Terra Invictus" grand strategy alien invasion game which they will be kickstarting down the road (hopefully this year).
