Nova Scotia becomes 1st province to ban cat declawing
Procedure has been equated with amputating the top of a human finger
By Marina von Stackelberg, CBC News Posted: Mar 15, 2018 8:30 AM AT

Nova Scotia has officially become the first province in Canada to ban elective cat declawing.

The decision by the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association was announced in December. There was a three-month grace period before it took effect today.

"I see declawing as a mutilation of an animal for no direct benefit to the animal. It's something that's done mostly to protect furniture," said retired veterinarian Hugh Chisholm, who has advocated for a declawing ban for years.

The practice has already been banned in the U.K., Europe, Australia and several California cities. There also have been calls in other Canadian provinces to ban declawing.

Declawing involves the amputation of bones in the cat's paws.

"It would be the equivalent to you taking a very sharp knife and cutting off your finger at the last knuckle joint," Chisholm said.

The procedure can lead to lasting impacts on a cat, including arthritis and pain in the paws and limbs, because the procedure changes the way a cat walks.

Chisholm said declawing cats now violates the province's veterinary medical association's code of ethics.

"As a veterinarian you could face pretty strict punishment, including loss of your licence to practice," he said.

It's been 35 years. Declawing don't stop hurting.

Good. When I learned that declawing was a thing in North America I was pretty horrified. To the best of my knowledge it's never really been done here, the Veterinary Association has a policy that surgical alteration should only be done when necessary to health and welfare of the animal, and is probably illegal anyway.

My province does something right for once.

Good for Nova Scotia.

Some years ago when I had to move apartments in a hurry, there was one cat-friendly place available that had a catch: mandatory declawing.

There is no way that I would subject my cats to maiming. Luckily, we did find a place where the landlord wasn't so <forum-appropriate words fail me>.

Dunno if it's still there, but I saw a documentary on cat declawing. It's done to a lot of the big cats as well - those trained for the circus and movies. Those animals go through absolute hell, as there are often small bits of bone that don't get cleaned out and they fester inside the paws and the animal's paws can become horribly infected.

Some municipalities in California have attempted to outlaw it; I think a couple actually succeeded. There are some vets who oppose banning declawing, merely because it cuts off one of their revenue streams.

Cat declawing (assuming you mean periodic cutting of the claws???) is the norm here. I never owned a cat, but i have been clawed by one. I think it is better to declaw, particularly if the cat is with children (moreso visiting children), given the instinct is to hit back, which would make the cat suffer more.
Remember what happened to the cat in Poe's "The black cat" ^^

It's pretty much the same as amputating your fingers from the knuckle down. It permanently impairs the cat's balance and leaves them without defenses (which also increases anxiety in them). Unpleasant thing.

It's possible to get little rubber/plastic caps for the cat's claws, if you're worried about them scratching up furniture or children.

^Wow, de-clawing sounds very nasty indeed then.
Kyriakos, cut off the tips of your fingers, from the outward end of your nails to the first knuckle as you go toward the rest of your hand.

How much typing are you going to be able to do? (not that most cats type, but we're talking about human equivalents of how cats provide for themselves) How well are you going to be able to groom yourself? How will your quality of life be, especially if you had an incompetent doctor and they missed things that later become infected?

Declawing is evil.

I've been leaving some comments on the CBC page.

I've been clawed by cats, too. It's par for the course in the life of any cat owner, particularly little kittens who haven't learned that not everything is a threat or a toy to be swatted. And there are some cats whose claw-trimming sessions turn into wrestling matches. If only they could understand that if they'd just be still, it would be over in less than 2 minutes.

BTW... the first time I ever trimmed one of my cats' claws, I took the nailclipper and did my own nails first, in front of her, so she could see that it was something that I had to go through as well and it's harmless. That's a technique I still use.

As for children, they can damn well stay away from my cats if they don't know how to act around them. I nearly kicked one of my typing clients out of my house one night when she brought her brats with her and one of them saw my tuxedo cat, hollered, "KITTY!" and started chasing him (presumably to pet him).

Tomtat reacted like any cat who wasn't used to children - he ran for the hills (upstairs in this case). I told the kid to come back and leave the cats alone. I said my cats are not used to children, as I don't have any, and were scared.

If you don't want to get scratched then just don't have a cat, is my opinion of the matter. Declawing is a disgusting thing.

Yeah, I can't imagine doing it to a cat.
But I also laugh at attempting to put plastic tips on their claws. It's hard enough to clip them.

I hear they're glued on so once you get them on, they don't get a lot of choice.
But trying to glue them on just seems like an invitation for more scars.
