You Set The Salaries

If I can make the same amount of money as a security guard as I could as a doctor, and I don't have to spend seven years at university learning to be a security guard, why in Stalin's name would I ever become a doctor?
You could become a doctor, but only work 8 hour weeks. The rest of the time you could spend with your family, in church, or just generally relaxing in front of the TV with a hot meal and some friends.

Or you can be realistic and be a doctor who is on call all the time and frequently working for 30 hours straight.

We get more doctors and less menial labourers. That is, low paid workers would work longer hours, to make up for their lack of intelligence/skills, meaning we will need less of them, so the more intelligent can move up the career ladder, which will eventually lead to more doctors to replace the ones who only work 8 hour weeks.

Why do we need salary caps for any professional sport?

There are what, 14 players on any Major League Baseball team? There are 30 MLB teams in the U.S., so that's 420 MLB players nationally, out of 290 million people in the United States.

it doesnt really matter what the % is of MLB players compared to other Americans. What does matter is that the current system is more then a little unjust. I thought maybe you might have been more sensitive to the plight of small market teams, seeing as your hometown ball club almost got contracted a few years ago because they dont have a huge amount of personal wealth behind them like the yankees. But maybe you arent a baseball fan.

Lets compare Major League Baseball, where there are no salary caps or wage restrictions or spending caps, to the NFL, where minimal cap rules apply. (the NFL does not in fact, actually have a wage limit per player, only per team, which thus restricts the amount of money a team can spend on one player)

A few major league baseball teams are in huge media markets (NY, LA), and are owned by people with huge amounts of personal money to infuse into the team's payroll, reguardless of if the team turns a profit. The Yankees are bouyed by a tv station. Rupert Murdock owns the LA DOdgers, etc etc. There are, at most, 6 baseball teams (Both NY clubs, the Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox and the Braves) in this situation. For the rest of the clubs, they must build teams via the draft and with their farm systems, milk the young kids for a few years, and when they get really good, they have to trade them to the big teams for prospects, and let the cycle renew.

Meanwhile, salaries go flying upwards, in a mini-cold war over the best players by the big 6. There is little compitition in Baseball, the fans get screwed, because tickets have to cost 70 bucks, and most players get screwed, because they lose their flexibilty as to where they can play.

The NFL has none of those rules. Players have a easier way of changing teams based on their flucuating market value, ticket prices are lower, and every team has a chance to compete each year, depending on the skill of their management, because from the start, everybody gets an equal shot at everybody. Thats why everybody loves football.

No, it's just that he has a tendency to post articles that the Weekly World News wouldn't publish.

rmsharpe isn't a very nice guy. He's the guy you wouldn't invite to your pool party, only to find out he is holding one himself with the dallas cheerleaders as lifeguards.

-note to rm, would you consider the dallas cheerleaders offensive;)

Actually, I tend to post articles from websites, commercial tv and national broadsheet newspapers. Stop living in your own fantasy world

You post them from the "Freedom Underground" and from some supposedly "independent journalist" in Iraq.

I can't help but think of the Jew reading a neo-Nazi newspaper (it's a joke.) The gist of it is, two Jews are sitting on a bench, one of them is reading a neo-Nazi newspaper and the other a Jewish paper. The Jewish paper man asks "why are you reading that garbage?"

The other man says "I used to read that paper, but what did I find? Terrorism in Israel, anti-Semitism in Europe, and Jews living in poverty. So I switched to the neo-Nazi paper. Now what do I find? Jews own all the banks, Jews are rich and powerful, Jews control the media! The news here is much better!"

I was hoping that you'd do that :goodjob:

You imply that I post articles from only those sources: Freedom Underground and an idependent journalist. You say "supposedly", so I assume you mean that he is actually affiliated with some news organisation: I'm sure that you'll find proof for that :)

In the past month, I have posted articles from: The Sunday Herald newspaper, http://www.freedomunderground.org, http://www.commondreams.org, BBC News, The New York Times newspaper, The Scotsman newspaper, The Daily Telegraph newspaper, http://www.americanfreepress.net, Bloomberg, MSNBC, http://www.informationclearinghouse.info, The Guardian newspaper, Inter Press Service News Agency, Yahoo News, http://www.jihadunspun.com, http://www.truthout.org, Free Inquiry Magazine and http://www.newtopiamagazine.net

Quite a varied bunch in there, eh?

Oh, the irony..............

I would start everyone out at a flat 20-30K base salary range, then, depending on the contribution and importence to society, that salary would be raised or lowered. Less important jobs (things like entertainment, sports) would make less. More important jobs (like civic works, military, medical, etc.) would make more. Maybe a 10-20K give or take on each range. Important jobs would yeild about 50,000 top. Less important ones (acting, entertainment, sports) would get 15,000 minimum. Jobs should never really be over 60,000 a year. People wind up buying material wealth for themselves rather than for others. That, I would think, would stop the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. Yes, you could still get overtime pay.

Just wondering, what kind of system would the above fall under?
