Why do we need salary caps for any professional sport?
There are what, 14 players on any Major League Baseball team? There are 30 MLB teams in the U.S., so that's 420 MLB players nationally, out of 290 million people in the United States.
it doesnt really matter what the % is of MLB players compared to other Americans. What does matter is that the current system is more then a little unjust. I thought maybe you might have been more sensitive to the plight of small market teams, seeing as your hometown ball club almost got contracted a few years ago because they dont have a huge amount of personal wealth behind them like the yankees. But maybe you arent a baseball fan.
Lets compare Major League Baseball, where there are no salary caps or wage restrictions or spending caps, to the NFL, where minimal cap rules apply. (the NFL does not in fact, actually have a wage limit per player, only per team, which thus restricts the amount of money a team can spend on one player)
A few major league baseball teams are in huge media markets (NY, LA), and are owned by people with huge amounts of personal money to infuse into the team's payroll, reguardless of if the team turns a profit. The Yankees are bouyed by a tv station. Rupert Murdock owns the LA DOdgers, etc etc. There are, at most, 6 baseball teams (Both NY clubs, the Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox and the Braves) in this situation. For the rest of the clubs, they must build teams via the draft and with their farm systems, milk the young kids for a few years, and when they get really good, they have to trade them to the big teams for prospects, and let the cycle renew.
Meanwhile, salaries go flying upwards, in a mini-cold war over the best players by the big 6. There is little compitition in Baseball, the fans get screwed, because tickets have to cost 70 bucks, and most players get screwed, because they lose their flexibilty as to where they can play.
The NFL has none of those rules. Players have a easier way of changing teams based on their flucuating market value, ticket prices are lower, and every team has a chance to compete each year, depending on the skill of their management, because from the start, everybody gets an equal shot at everybody. Thats why everybody loves football.
