What kind of system would be reasonable to employ if you, as the human species in general, visited an alien civilization that wasn't advanced enough or mentally capable yet to understand you and learn from you, and wanted to make some sort of notice to give a heads up for the next visit?

I think religion is the way to go. How exactly, I'm not sure.

...because you're satisfied with the impact religion has had in our society and history? :mischief:

Math or literature. Both would be hard to decipher though, depending on what the aliens are like.
Usually people mostly think that an alien species will be humanoid. In that case their physiology would give them some similar abilities to ourselves, and make communication a lot easier.

How would the math and literature survive for thousands of years?

I'd tell a certain portion of the population to end their calender at the certain date, of course.

I'm glad you recognize it as a given solution.

I'd find a high arid plateau and put huge symbols on it that can't even be recognized as symbols except from the air.

I think that may be about to backfire.

My idea would be until they can prove they won't destroy themselves in a war using any technology we give them (or any of their own). They can have tech that could be used to destroy themselves, but would have to be socially advanced enough to not do so.

And yes I am thinking of the Tolan from Stargate.

Stop reminding me of that. You are scaring me, as those civilizations are the same as the ones who predicted the arrival of the conquistadors, and even described their skin and horses, while there were no horses in America.

Or leave an obelisk on their moon with dimensions in the ratio 1:4:9? ;)

I've never actually read 2001: A Space Odyssey, but am I right in assuming the monoliths were a sort of...trail to be followed?

If so, that seems like the most useful way. Leave clues, clues that would progressively require more and more scientific advancements, cooperation, and curiosity to solve. Basically, indicators of stable society that wouldn't make a mess of galactic politics.

Leave massive geometrically obvious monuments in the place with the least amount of environmental erosion pointing to our constellation and have the biggest one point to our home star.

Inside use pictographs to explain us.

If we have the technology to get to another star system, then we probably have the technology to build AI-driven drones that can reason on their own and report back to me.

I would leave a couple of those there, on the planets moon maybe, or hiding on asteroids.. Somewhere where the aliens wouldn't find them. I would instruct the drones to monitor the planet and report back to me when the aliens reach certain developmental milestones.

It would have to be done so that the aliens don't find the drones, not even when they develop space travel and start exploring their solar system. I wouldn't want them to know about the drones when I make my appearance and introduce myself as God Emperor Warpus of the known Universe.
