Isn't it "s" for sentry? I think "p" is for paradrop.

P is for "Sea Patrol" for naval units. My problem with this is that I tried to use it before and for some reason, units were still getting by. I not sure what the line of sight is for a Destroyer, for example. But Sea Patrol makes sense.

Normal or Epic, most of the time. Quick for a change of pace.

After playing a bunch of Epic games, going back to Normal can be a bit jarring. On the other hand, few things are more boring than waiting 15-25 turns to research a single technology. Maybe that's why I get so excited about fresh gold in my capital's radius.

I haven't tried Epic or Marathon really that much so by default, my "favorite" is normal.

Marathon - because I was introduced to the game by a friend that likes it. After a few coop MP games on Marathon I just couldn't take anything faster even if I tried - have never finished a game on faster than Epic. It just feels wrong after so much Marathoning.

Marathon - so that units don't become obsolete by the time they reach your enemy ;)

I used to play exclusively on Marathon and I've gradually quicken up the pace to Normal. Now, I can't imagine playing on a slower speed. Normal allows you to still wage war with reasonable effectiveness.

Epic speed; to me, it seems like what normal should be. The game doesn't run so fast, yet it's not as painfully slow as marathon can get (especially for non-warmongers like me). It's also because it's more easy to calculate the game stages (each era covers about 100 turns in Epic); & because I got too used to play it.

Epic for me as I like to ge a bit of a feel for each era. I can get though a game with heavy warmongering in 5 hours comfortably so it's not too long. I'd play marathon so I could war in every era but I don't think my machine could handle it.

I don't see a performance difference based on speed. When I was playing NC Charlemagne on Quick, the lag between turns took just as long as it would on Marathon. It's just an impression, though.

More units = slower speed though right? Isn't Marathon scaled to have more units? The modern era is just bearable for me as is.

Performance still matters for speed imo... if there was no waiting time between turns slower speed games might actually take less real time for me than faster ones, because good micromanagement makes less of a difference.

Used to play on epic and did lots of warfare. Now I just enjoy normal and having to think more to get a military advantage if needed. Also play on quick when playing OCC, and I want to try quick for a normal game some day.

I also got the impression that the AI becomes more and more incompetent the farther you stray from default settings.

You know, I've been reaching the same conclusion lately. I think that's because the AI wasn't originally designed to play on Marathon.

The AI personalities that build many units do as well or better in Marathon, from what I've seen. AIs that build nothing that moves tend to take it in the rear. Given the number of times we've seen Mansa dominate a cultural game by wonderspamming, I hardly feel bad about playing a level that suggests that Malinese might not be the dominant culture in the world.

More than a month? Geeze 1 hour a day and you can finish a nice marathon game in a week, maybe 10 days if you take your time. If you don't have time for 1 hour a day, why are you playing Civ in the first place!? ;)

Seriously, you finish marathon games in 7 hours? On what, duel size maps and rushing your opponent? It typically takes me 12-15 hours to finish a Normal game and 7-8 hours to finish a Quick one.

7-8 hours for a quick game!?!?

Quick games can finish in less than half that! With Time victories!

Whoa, what do you guys use the time for? My Standard/Marathon games usually last for 4-5 hours, depending on the VC. Space race takes longest, Domi and Cultural take less. Large maps take about 7 hours.
