Hello World Builders!

I was wondering what map types you like (or disslike) playing? Also what settings you go for at set up?

Of what I've played so far, here are my thoughts:

Continents - aah great Vanilla flavour! Biggest challange (for me) interconternental warfare with an advanced Civ.

Earth - much like Continents but with annoying (IMHO!) choke points.

Oval - very tough & not much fun:(

Fractal - interesting & varied & unpredicatble landscape, was a good fun!

Inland Sea - my new 101.383 game! Any strategy tips welcome! Review later.

As for settings, I always opt for only a few CS (2 this time), just can't be doing with them! I've also gone for scarce resources as it gives the game a very challenging dynamic.

So, which maps (& settings) do you love/hate?

I am a fractal man, more often than not the map is 'interesting' and you don't cook it with the settings.

I used to play standard or smaller, but now that I've gotten my new Imac/Audi A6 model (3.4/2TB/5670 2gb)...

I CAN PLAY ON LARGE MAPS!!!

Hehe, lots of RAM and processor help. I can play huge maps on my 2 year old quad-core, 6GB of RAM. :D

As far as map type, I like a lot of variety. Sometimes I like fighting over scarce resources, but other times, I want to have what I need and do some building.

"Earth" for me...

"Mountains" also

"Continents Plus" my best feeling :goodjob:

I love Ice Age. It's a challenge due to limited space and resources, and the ocean levels are usually horribly low while all the land is tundra or snow.
It's pretty much fractal with an extra fun ice age challenge.

Try the Mod "Perfect World 3" to generate maps. It uses real world environmental "physics" to determine the layout. I have found the generated maps are fun to play and very dynamic.

I like Perfect World. Does it work on Mac?

I have had no problems using it. Been playing a Huge map version on it since the update with no problems. A fantastic landscape with realistic mountain ranges (and passes), climate conditions, etc.

It's all in this forum. Depends which version you have bought. Start at the FAQ.

Map: Inland Sea
Difficulty: Prince
CS: 2
Civs: 6
VC: Sci / Domination / Culture (my aim)

What a game - not quite finished, I am in my death throes:sad: In a nutshell, China started a war with me very early...., and have been at war with me for THE WHOLE GAME!!! Of course they offered peace, but I won't accept anything other than unconditional (as they started it!). It has been a truly bizzare game, in some ways fun, in others downright frustrating. I had a very strong strategic defensive position into which Chine threw everything, China couldn't advance and neither could I. However, slowly China's tech has outstripped mine (as I was going for a Culture victory) and I have now been left almost defenceless (having to fight off the French on my other flank). So, China are now on the brink of a Science victory, although India might pip them to the post with a Cultural one.... my final aim is to get my captured city back from Napoleon (grrrr!).

The Circular Sea map has, for me, been a challenge. Strangely, I was the only Civ with a navy, which helped to keep me in the game. Why the AI didn't build on the coast is a wonder? Right at the end I realised I'd been disadvantaged by my starting position, being at the Northern point of the circular sea. If you start at a NE, NW, SE, SW point then there is more land up for grabs (picture a circle in a square!).

OK, I'm off to get some revenge against the French....

I like the Fractal or Tiny Islands or small continents with low sea levels. I use the standard or large map and use quick game speed.

Tiny islands with low sea level, hmm. Sounds interesting! As China defeated me I'll give this a go next.

Why do you like islands / small continents? Any strategy tips for such maps?

Cheers!

Any map that doesnt put ocean between you and the ai, since the ai cant fight on or across water. Preferably pangea plus.

Pangea mostly. But I love to play lots of people on an "Earth" map. It just gives a bit more historic feeling (even if the civs doesn't start a realistic place).
