[R&F] Your first game of Rise and Fall?

Now we're closer to release, I'll have a quick look at the XML prior to starting, and I expect to try the Scots vs a good selection of new and old opponents.
I'll adjust colours of players to my tastes.

I am really divided on this. On one hand, I'd really like to try out some of the builder civs, like the Netherlands, Scotland or Korea. On the other hand, there is my urge to play around with the new mechanics, especially the loyalty system, so the Mapuche are an obvious choice (and who knows, maybe the Zulu). Yet, there is always the urge of conquering the world under a Mongol horde ... I guess the Mapuche in the end, especially after there will be a Scotland playthrough at one of my favourite Youtube channels, so I'll get my bagpipe and kilts fix from there :)

Civ: I like to randomise civs for me and the AI so I will continue that and see who I get :)
Diff: Prince
Speed: Standard (for the first game)
Map: Pangea
Size: Standard
Victory: Domination

Got the day off work on Friday to play all day :)

Is it weird that I'm just planning to play France like I normally do, instead of trying any of the newcomers? I want to explore the new game systems with a civ I'm familiar with before dealing with unfamiliar bonuses, and I'm also excited to see how much R&F improves CdM, seeing as she's one of the weakest leaders, and looks to be getting a bit better with the expansion.

King, Standard Speed, Standard Size, Continents (or maybe Fractal).

Speaking of which, I'll be setting all of the AI to new civs, which means 2 of the 9 new leaders get the boot for my first game. I've already decided to axe Chandra, since India isn't new. Who else of the new leaders should get the boot for my first game?

I will play with the new civs for sure, but to each their own. I think I would remove Wilhelmina as the incessant nagging about trade routes that I've seen from streams seems super annoying.

I do plan on eventually playing most of the new civs (there are always some civs I just never play...usually pure warmongers). I'm most excited to play as Wilhelmina, Tamar, and Lautaro.

My first will be as Georgia. I'd like a relatively passive, stress-free religious civ for my first game, to get the hang of the mechanics with my favourite victory type.

Thereafter, the sky's the limit; I'd very much like to try the Mongols out. And the Persians again as well, as I have long wanted to try a game where I conquer the starting continent then go for a national-park-heavy strategy with the land I've conquered, and this seems as good a time as any.

Yep, so definitely starting with the Cree.

Then Scotland/Mapuche/Netherlands in any order

Georgia

Korea

Chandragupta

Lastly Zulu/Mongols if I ever play them, straight warmonger just doesn't appeal to me

I'm leaning towards Scotland for my first game. Not sure about difficulty level, probably Prince. Large or Huge Continents map. Since I prefer to play with fewer than the normal amount of civs for a given map size, I'll probably split the new civs as my opponents between my first two games. First game I'll probably pick Cree, Mapuche, Netherlands, and Korea. Second game I'll probably be Cree against Zulus, Mongolia, Scotland, and Georgia. Maybe I should split up Zulus and Mongolia. I'll throw Chandragupta into one of those games as well, probably the second one.

I'll probably start a new game everyday until I've played as all the new ones. Then I'll continue starting a new game everyday,(because why would I finish a game?) but I'll play as whichever civ strikes my fancy that day. I don't normally use the phrase "strikes my fancy." I apologize.

My games (partial) in order.
1. Chandragupta - play until the Medieval Era or when I have enough units killed with Varu. I'll see how much expansion and loyalty play against each other.
2. Korea - Attempting to play tall. I'll see how viable it is and focus on a few well-promoted governors. I'll probably play until the Renaissance.
3. Georgia. I'll play through the Renaissance, focusing on City States and Era Score to see if I can string Golden Age bonuses along. That'll be my closest to a Golden Age deep dive.
4. Mongolia. Against Scythia, India, Russia, etc. I'm growing chronological, so this is just to destroy things and not a test.
5. Scots. I may have to download the No Warmonger Penalty mod (whatever it's called) to actually get the AI to conquer other cities. As I assume that mod will be broken on launch, I'll just start at Medieval and try to get Great People till I get bored.
6. Mapuche. I'll do a Medieval start to get at the unique unit up faster. I'll use that to attack whatever is in a Dark Age and see what happens.
7. Zulu. I don't know anything about the Zulu yet.
8. Cree. I don't have a feel for my Cree game yet. It'll be an Alliance-focused game, but I need to start Ancient to maximize the UU.
9. Netherlands. Polders. More polders. Polder till I'm bored.

Update: Medieval Era start for the Zulu. I'll build encampments and beeline towards Pikes and Mercenaries. So, basically, building a few builders and a whole bunch of spearmen. Hopefully I'll kill an early barbarian with a spearman near the start. And hopefully I'll get up to eight units quickly and combine some it corps.

I'm wondering, the Zulu and Mongols look like great fun, but maybe I don't want to be a warmonger civ first game to try and get a feel for the mechanics. So in that case possibly the Cree, possibly Mapuche, possibly Georgia. I'll see what takes my fancy. Continents map, Standard size, Standard Pace, probably Emperor difficulty - there needs to be some resistance to really feel those Dark/Golden Age/Loyalty effects :P.

Civilization: India
Leader: Chandragupta
Difficulty: Deity
Speed: Marathon (Medieval Start)
Map: Pangea
Size: Small
Other Civs: Ghengis, Shaka, Cyrus, Alexander, Tomyris and Ghandi
Victory Conditions: Domination and Religious only.
Victory Pursued: Religious Loss to Ghandi as I help spread his religion and protect him from all the Heathens

Cree on Pangaea, low sea level to take most advantage of UU

I'm going to build a lot of scouts and promote them ASAP via the 50% exp policy card, perhaps start conquering once I upgrade them to Rangers

Pursuing a loss on your first play through? I don't understand why you'd ever try to lose, let alone not even trying to win one first. This is blowing my mind.

What’s wrong with role playing?

I quite like the idea as I want to shepherd Georgia to a Religious victory in a game, sometime.

It would be a win in my books and that’s all that counts.

I didn't say it was wrong, I just didn't ever think of that or really understand the motivation. But you do you.

I remember Sid Meier talking about how different people play his games different ways.

He said for his railroad game that some people didn’t even bother to build any railways and just played the stock market. He said that for them that was fun and he thought that was cool.

Probably will test kongo... If only to see if loyalty flipping (city yo-yoing) will work as I think it does... Get a size 30-40 capital.. Flip a city... Sell it back to AI for a fortune... Flip it again, etc.
