this reminds me of getting raped by attila the hun in BTS on turn 40.

i don't know what caused it, but it needs addressed. these things shouldn't EVER spawn so early - seriously. i had 2 warriors in my city, i was almost done with my first worker, i had NO tile improvements, i just started my second research project and all of a sudden i die to this?

i don't know if someone got it in a lair that was my assumption. but then i open world builder and theres about 4 of them just wandering.

They probably all came from a lair. And yes, it is broken, there were huge discussions in the general FfH forums about it very recently. I agree that the large numbers of strong enemies shouldn't spawn so early. Tough break man.

Now, if not for the turn I'd say they spawned out of a forest fire.... Were you playing FFPlus? The Malakim may have caused your demise, if so. Only way I can think to start a forest fire that early...... Although I think the fires were removed when the new scorch was imported to FF, and I know that anything they imported I copied, so that might not be it either..... Don't think I've ever seen mistforms from a lair though.

What difficulty are you playing at? My perceptions may be skewed from Immortal/Deity but building a worker after only 2 warriors seems suicidal. I want at least 4 warriors on each city and 2 for each worker before I think of improving tiles.

I got two words for ya buddy....Worldbuilder....uh I mean one word??Oh heck...

EDIT: personally I hate these guys, a big downside to using Flame I to clear forests. Seems to me like that does not seem to work as well as it used to...

there was no malakim present in the game.

i DID observe some mysterious forest fires, i was playing as the Mazatl so i know it wasn't me who started them.

occasionally i use it to moniter the AI - like i saw ortheus spawn on top of elohim - and spared them by deleting him AND his axe. (i only delete him if an AI is his victim, when its me, i turtle in my cities until he goes away or i have enough power to kill him).

i was on Monarch, and if your perceptions are correct i could probably use some advice. im used to going 2 warriors, 1 worker, 2 warriors, pallisade, 2 warriors, 1 worker and i repeat until i have 10 warriors and about 4 workers. then i can pile 5 warriors to explore, keep 3 in the city and stack the other 2 warriors with all 4 workers to get my economy going.

Wow, people sure do like building Warriors. This is what I do(I play Emperor, and usually win)

Worker -> Warrior -> Palisade -> Warrior/Scout(Situational)

im just used to seeing 10 billion barbarians all over me, i hate building warriors. i agree with getting that worker out there ASAP. shall i assume you turtle your starting units in your capital and hold off exploration until you get an economy going?

Wild Mana might have something to do with those. I havent seen a fire node yet but I expect something *explodey* spawns on it. Actually, shouldn't fire's not really spread when the AC is still around 0? That seems odd.

[thread detour] I hate ancient start (warriors fighting other warriors got old when I still played BTS), but if I remember correctly I would do:

1)warriors until happy cap (and a scout to watch for spiders)
2)worker
3)settlers until I can no longer properly defend them
4)warriors
5)workers
6)settlers again.

Pallisades are a waste because they are only good until your capitol is surrounded by cities, which you want to happen fastfastfast.

I haven't had the problems with Mistforms, but I lost a game very early when FOUR Gargoyles strolled into my territory and killed my lone Warrior defender.

Only one Warrior, you say?

Well, if you play at Epic or especially Marathon speed, it takes time to build up Warriors and these Gargoyles definitely came before turn 50, roughly the amount of turns it can take to build your first Warrior in Marathon.

I've also see that Lich show up early in the game and wipe out civs.

Fortunately, I don't think this is a common occurrence, just very bad luck.

It only happens if the Pristinus Pass happens to get 'activated'.

And yes, that thing will rape you.

yes! that thing was several spaces from my start but i didnt bother with it, maybe an AI tried to explore it?

i will have to start exploring hard lairs next to their lands then.

I think changes were made to prevent the AI from exploring dungeons and nasty lairs that are somewhat close to their borders early in the game. A bad boss result from a lair can sometimes wipe out even a conservative, defensive start. They do seem to be somewhat oblivious to Pristin Pass though. Fortunately, gargoyles seem to behave more randomly than the other barbarians. Sometimes, yeah, they'll rape ya. Mistforms I hate.

My starting build is usually:

scout scout scout warrior

And then depending on how nasty things are looking (or how soon I'll grow a pop) I either start a worker or wait until I've build a few more warriors. I rarely protect my workers, but I do rush them back to the city if they come under fire.

That's true. I was nowhere near the Pass, and, I think generally, those Gargoyles tend to stay near the Pass rather than travel across the map for someone.

I think it was a lair event that popped the Gargoyles. I have popped them before, but in this case I think an AI explorer did the honors.

I just had a Diseased Corpse show up on Turn 15 Epic. Fortunately, my lone Warrior was able to defend, but, of course, got diseased.

Actually, the Guardians will inexorably chase the activating unit until they kill it/run into something else.

So, a rather zippy scout can draw a big old cloud of hurt after it.

This appears to be the behavior of most (if not all) barbarian units. If they see a unit that they have a good chance of killing they will move towards it to try and kill it. Sometimes I'll have a heavily wounded warrior out in the woods and a stack of orcs will move next to him. Realizing he'll die, even on a hilled forest, if he tries to defend I have him move away out of sight of the stack. They seem to know exactly which square I moved to and will move to intercept. They will continue to chase my wounded warrior until a better target presents itself or they lose sight of their target. Since my warrior doesn't move faster than the orcs, they'll never lose sight of me. If I had a scout I could break clear of the woods and move out of sight range. They then will revert to their more random behavior.

Gargoyles always do this, since they are almost always going to heavily outmatch their opponent. You've probably seen this behavior a lot with bears too.

How does one do that? I have tried to do it many times but just can't figure him out.

Wow, it's like we're playing a different game. I can't imagine building ANYTHING before 3 warriors on any reasonable difficulty if I expected to survive the raging Orc stacks. I assume you have the raging barbs and aggressive AI options off? I didn't realise the difference was that dramatic, though; building a worker before having a MINIMUM of 4 warriors is utterly pointless with raging barbs because you can expect stacks of 4+ barb warriors every couple turns starting around turn 10-15.

Also, someone else mentioned deleting Orthus to protect AI civs on Monarch... Is the Monarch AI that bad? I've never seen a civ have trouble with Orthus; whoever he spawns next to usually has an insane early game with the Axe for early conquest.

Even when I played on emperor I would see an AI civ or 2 die to Orthus in about half the games I played. That was back in the patch where AI's couldn't survive the regular barbarians though...

As for the barbarians I think they (and AI's) get an extra vision range, to simulate 'using logic to figure out where your units went and where your cities are'.

Anyone remember that angry Lich that would pop up a few patches back? Now that was a civilization killer.
