ZPNESV: Flowers on the Razor Wire (World Conquest)

*48 HOURS ORDERS DEADLINE INITIALIZED*

If you need more time, plz say so now, and not just before this deadline is due... thx :)

Director

William Miller, Secretary of Engineering, tapped his folder against the smooth metal desk several times. The various other high-ranking Technocrats sat in the room, a coldly-coloured, sharp-angled shrine to the blue and grey hues of Utilitarian Construction, straightened up in their seats. Rain was still falling outside, the sky a drab splattering of thick clouds with a touch of smoke rising from the industrial complexes of the city.

“This meeting of the Technocratic Council of the Columbia region is hereby called into order. Ladies and Gentlemen, as we all know, the purpose of this meeting is to consult with Party Command with regards to issues of domestic development over the coming quarter. Additionally, I understand that we will be informed of some alterations in government structure. Mister Wu, the radio, please.”

A balding Chinese man nodded politely and pressed several buttons in the apparatus before him, opening up the connection.

Greetings, Columbia Council. This is Technocrat Party Headquarters.

“Good day to you sirs.”

And madam. addeded a female voice.

“Of course.”

We have chosen this time to reveal the latest development in optimal governance of the Technocratic Republic. May I introduce to you, Doctor Roger Tallon.

“Tallon?” whispered Miller, “Has anyone heard of a Doctor Tallon in high government?”

A new voice began. It was quick and almost bubbling with enthusiasm, strangely modulated over the crude speakers through which the group listened.

Hello world! I am the great Switch Engineer, Circuiter and Artificer of Intelligence- and I present to you the future of effective governance! My brainchild, this beautiful being and mighty mind that I have built, is what many of you may know as a switch engine-

“We’re getting replaced by an algebra machine!?” exclaimed one low-ranking Technocrat.

Hardly. Director is a switch engine the likes of which our Republic has never seen. Over its years of existence, it has built up to a tremendous level of complexity. Several months ago, it reached a tested intelligence level roughly equivalent to an adult human. Throughout its existence, its intelligence has increased along a steadily accelerating curve.

“But how is that possible? The sheer machinery and space needed to support a thinking engine of that scale would be... unthinkable!”

I can assure you that, while vast, the machinery of Director- as I would prefer you to call him- his machinery is finite and quite within the grasp of a simple human such as yourself.

Several Technocrats around the table made quiet shows of indignation.

He exists in a subterranean complex in the central Rockies, excavated to provide both metal supplies and housing for the memory banks.

“But the costs of this... Director project. They must have been colossal!”

Funding has been provided by our fine governing council, and they have already begun to see it pay off. Director has restructured and increased agricultural production in the Manitoba region by over 60%, and simultaneously streamlined Colorado region’s industrial and agricultural productivity to entirely make up for the losses caused by the Imperial Valley Earthquake in the California region.

“Impossible!” exclaimed one older man, “I spent 4 years as the Secretary of Mining in Colorado, and we had taxed the system to its limits already.”

With all due respect, Former Secretary Mahoney, the fundamentals of your economic plan were strong, but Director was better able to fully coordinate extraction efforts. His discovery of additional, deeper ferrous veins due to reasoned geological analysis didn’t hurt.

The group was silent. Then, Miller spoke up.

“So, you’ve introduced your machine-”

Director.

“You’ve introduced the Director.”

Director. No ‘the’.

Miller gritted his teeth in exasperation.

“Now what is ‘his’ role here?”

Say his name, damnit! Say it!

A cacophony of arguing sounds came out of the speakers. Mister Wu tactfully turned down the system, reducing it to a quiet buzz, until the original voice began again.

Please pardon Doctor Tallon- he is very dearly attached to his work, and that has only made him more dedicated to the cause. Director, having succeeded beyond our greatest hopes in his trials, is being raised to an advisory position in the Party. We trust that his analytic skills will provide extremely useful in both domestic and foreign governance in the future. I understand that the high position of what many of you regard as a mindless machine may cause some consternation. To this, I must invoke and remind you of the Technocratic Creed: Leadership by wisdom, Governance by capacity, management by expertise. None of you will be displaced in your positions, and the Technocratic Republic of Columbia will remain on the global forefront. Party command out.

Mister Wu turned off the transmission, and the group of Technocrats all looked at each other. Some were intrigued, others uncertain, some even angered. However, even as the silence faded away into intense discussion, in their hearts they all knew that a threshold had been passed. Great changes were coming to the Republic.

*24 HOURS REMAIN*, and so far as I know this deadline is cool with everyone...

@Lord_Iggy, this is interesting. How long till Director controls military forces on the front line, I wonder :)

Somehow I imagined this as the Iron Fascist theme, except with added cats.

Alright, I'm starting on the update, since I have time to do it tonight. This NES needs moar extra updates.

@Matt0088, could you maybe let me know about your long-term strategy etc so I know how to NPC your country in future? Also, you know, if you want to skip on details, or even create some NPC vassals or something, thats cool too.

EDIT: But in all seriousness, the song that best suits the great leader is this.

1945:
Hears of Iron

Caribbean warlords feel the wrath of the Iron Fascists, and the Iron-Technocrat alliance continues to build up forces in the north Atlantic. Fierce air battles are fought in the vicinity of Britannia. Yet as the Technocrats harbour USSB exiles, it seems a declaration of hostile intent towards the ever-expanding Eurasian alliance of the Khilāfat and Duckistan... Meanwhile the Afrikaaners plant their flag in the mountains of the Caucasus, at considerable cost to their forces elsewhere. The conflict in south-east Asia is bloodily resolved, and the world waits to see if the great powers of the old and new worlds will remain at peace...

So:
I sense the game stalemating into a long war of attrition between the Khilāfat-Duckistan alliance and its enemies on various fronts. Any thoughts on this? Should the game be ended soon, or even right now?

Anyways:
I've decided that, since allies can share territory and money, their territory should count towards triggering the special bonuses. But one player must have >66% of the required territories, and that player gets to choose the bonus. @Iggy and Luckymoose, because of this I've not swapped Midwest for California, unless you have a special reason to.

Although technologies can be traded, it takes a full turn to educate your friend(s). So the Khilāfat could only build normal tanks this turn.

Battleships will support amphibious invasions, but can't do any bombard attacks otherwise.

Defensive 'flanking bonus' is not yet implemented. I know this means attackers always have an advantage. I'm thinking of some kind of 'fortify' bonus, which would be more beneficial for infantry.

I guess carriers should be a little cheaper, or less vulnerable... perhaps Armour 4 instead of 3.

You will pay for sinking the IFS WHISKERS!!!!!

It seems that Justo's fighters are ultra-elites and are now invincible

How come I didn't loot the USSB's income?

Loot is only from non-conquered territories sending income to the occupied capitol. You got their capitol, and got your $5 income from that as one of your territories, but there was nothing extra to steal, since that was their only territory...
