.01 - Guerrillas!

:bump:

I might be OOP, i.e. cannot play CIV but this seems to go rather slow, ... too slow. :gripe:

Where are you, bobrath? Where are the others?
If you can't play please request a skip or - at least - let us know.
Thank You.

Well... The raging barbs are not doing anything to make our lives easier. They're ambushing our axes with 2 or 3 units of archers and making a general nuisance of themselves.

I did take OB with Tok, and soon after Ragnar asked for the same (which I gave). Too bad Wang Kon came along soon after and asked us to declare against Ragnar. I declined since we really can't handle a war AND the barbs at the same time. So we've got a -2 with Wang for now. Good news is that it probably helps us with other civs that like us better then Wang.

Priesthood came in, and I set research to IW. Our research frankly stinks.

Vienne was pulled to growth while I tried to reconnect the stones. I've Pre-Chopped two forests (marked with signs "PC").

The massive barbs (and our unfortunate losses) meant that our capital had to be whipped twice in my turns. Last whip actually occured on my last turn and as soon as I hit the arrow I realized my SG mistake. Sorry for leaving you with that decision out of your hands, but a warrior in our capital is no match for the barb axe just over the way. Also, there's nothing to be done about our corn. It will be pillaged when you hit enter (unless the comp decides to attack much better rated defensive units).

We really need to get us some chariots or at least promote some axemen with combat. The best odds we get right now are 50% against the barb hordes - and that's not good math!

Good news (I guess) is that I have a settler just outside blue dot:
civ4screenshot0008ey9.jpg

The archer there just fought off an attack, and I suspect there's another barb archer out there (thus the escorting axe). We can certainly use more workers since there's way more to do then just 2 can handle. One worker is in route to hook up the stone and the other is free (having just finished up a pre-chop).

Can the center hold?

One other note (in review of sorts)

We had numerous units inside our cultural borders that I think were doing some sort of fog busting (south side mainly). Not 100% sure on that, however we should remember that our cultural borders bust their own fog and so any units used to fog bust should be outside the borders... tho there is a financial downside to that.

Not sure how much having more fog busters and fewer defenders would have done except that the extra warning (and possibly fewer barbs) would be worth it.

My personal review point is that it might have made more sense to not finish off the settler, but instead pop out a worker to make up for the pillaging that's going on.

We are in a pretty bad situation ... no infrastructure buildings to speak of. That's pretty bad.

Let's focus on getting back to the game economically, chop some trees off capitol and set up cottages. Get libraries up and focus on techs that we can trade off.

City founded where blue dot is ....

dot-BC0085-tolosa.jpg

As seen, immediately revealed a barb axe ... which proceed on to kill our archer city defender. He was avenged.

Then, the news we have all been hoping to avoid but deep down all knew that it was inevitable:

dot-BC0005-pyramids.jpg

Always look on the bright side, we have funds to go 100% research for quite some while.

Made a trade with Peter:

dot-BC0040-trade.jpg

No metal near us ... the closest would be blocked by a range of mountains to the west. Next closest in the south ... which no doubt would soon see some barb cities popping up.

cot-AD0050-map.jpg

I delayed the granary in capitol, we don't need it right now, seeing that whipping unhappiness is 38 turns away ... and instead completed one more worker and now going for library. I suggest going back into military build once this round of infrastructure completes, and gear towards settling one more city.

Research wise I go for monarchy as trade material ... also we have wine.

Bloody Barbs ... Brace on!

Well, good set of turns there... I guess iron isnt so important for now, as our unique unit can be built with copper.

I guess im next. i will play in a few hours, leaving time for some discussion here.

Not much to discuss (imo). As GreyFox said, we need to get back up from our knees before we can start running.

Well, played 10 turns, and nothing much happened... just some barbarian butt kicking.

Wang kong demanded to stop trading with peter. He was already annoyed, so i refused. That gained us a -2 for a total of -3 with him.
Shaka also is annoyed with us for religion with a total of -4

Civ4ScreenShot0039.jpg

Some civs changed civics to hederitary rule:

Civ4ScreenShot0041.jpg

We finished library and granary in our capital, wich reduced some research turns. I started an axe, and with some more military we should try to hook up the corn again. Also next player should be aware of an barb axe heading at us from west.

The postcard: Our capital from the sky!

Fox, how did you make the red pic? That's pretty damn cool.

/relurk

@stuge: I use GIMP, so "Layers > Colors > Colorize ..." to make everything red - the light source up there is done by "Filters > Light Effects > Supernova ..." and the border is of course "Script-Fu > Decor > Fuzzy Border ..."

and thanks for the bump, Dot has his privileged 2x-Got-it-Period-as-SG-starter, so Scowler is free to grab it.

On the picture: It's marvellous, Fox. :goodjob:

On my got-it-period: :scared: :hide: . I totally forgot that I'm up. Got it.

. hurries off to play .... :run:

1st for missing my turn. I shouldn't be bumping teammates and then forget to play myself.
:hammer2:

2nd for still delaying this a bit. I have a couple of questions/ideas that I'd like to have comments on before playing. I'll wait with playing this for 8 hours to wait for your comments.

The Situation

circles.jpg

The purple axeman already has a woodsman II promo so I'd like him to take the white spot and get the combat I axe to our western flank. I don't think that there'll be much discussion about that.
More discussion might be needed on the green worker. He's currently building a cottage in 11 turns. So he just got started. I'd like to veto that and rather have him build a farm instead. The reasoning comes from our capital.

bibracte.jpg

We've had bad luck to miss out on both early 'religious wonders'. We've had good luck that three of the other religions have been founded by two leaders. And religions don't spread easily on highlands. I'd like to built a buddhist temple in Bibracte and run a priest there for a great prophet and ultimately a shrine.

If you have a look at the score chart in the first screeny you'll see that we have OB with some people who don't have a religion yet. If we're fast enough we can spread buddhism to them for multiple good.

1) Boosting relations.
2) Spying. This is still warlords - not BTS.
3) Bolstering our economy with the shrine from the prophet.

I'd like to spread it to Ragnar and HC. Ragnar because he's also a next door neighbour and HC because he seems to be one of the score leaders. Always good to have one up there at our side.

For spreading our religion I wonder how fast we should/must start building missionaries. Input is well appreciated.

vienne.jpg

I see that Vienne could need a Granary after the Library. But I'd like to have your opinion whether or not it might be wiser to go for missionaries straight after (maybe even choprush them :mischief: ) and get buddhism spread to a couple of capitals at least. Um 'nen Fuss in die Tür zu kriegen ... (to get ones foot in the door)

tolosawithnotes.jpg

Tolosa is fine, I think. It could make for a decent science booster, too. I've scribbled in some farms and cottages. This way we could employ one or two scientists and have a couple of cottages there, too.
Maybe even farm up the floodplain to work the gold?
I'm inclined to go worker >> library there.

One More Thing (TM): Do we want to settle a fourth city? And if so, where? Yellow dot?

I'll check back in seven to eight hours and will play then. :) I hope to have at least one reply. Simply didn't want to make these decisions without you. ;)

IMO, the cottage worker is just killing time until we can get the barb off the farm AND insure its safety from future barbs. We obviously need the corn sooner rather then later.

Regarding missionaries. Until we know that we can get them safely to other nations (ie no barb encounters), is it worth the lost hammers?

Yeah, I think as soon as we can secure the eastern range, worker should definitely go re-farm the corn.

Missionaries: let's not be too ambitious with hat ... yeah, spreading religions has lots of benefits on paper, but there are always opportunity cost involved. Right now our priority should be to get our cities and economies up and fend off the barbs.

But build the monastery in Vienne if you want, the 10% boost is worth it, and set the foundation for future BudMiss builds.

--

Thank you, gentlemen. I'm off to play. I'll stick with infrastructure in Vienne and go for the temple in Bibracte. ;)

Gentlemen, I've played seven turns and once Monarchy was in I decided to stop. So I'll give you a turn report and a question at the end.

Turn 0

Vetoed the Axe in Bibracte for a temple.

IBT: The barb warrior pillaged the road on the corn. Should've attacked him with the archer in hindsight. :smoke:

Turn 1

Vienne: Library >> Granary

IBT: Parthenon built iafal

Turn 2

Killed a barb warrior at Tolosa

IBT: Lost an archer and killed an axe

Turn 3

Bibracte: Temple >> Barracks
Vienne has grown. Everything's fine.
Killed a barb Axe

Turn 4

Killed a barb Warrior

IBT: Archer killed barb Axe

Turn 5

Barracks at Vienne interrupted for an Axeman. I give in. We need it. :)

IBT: Church of Nativity built iafal.

Turn 6

:coffee:

Turn 7

Monarchy comes in. Here's what Peter would or rather wouldn't trade for it.

peterdeal.jpg

That's what he wouldn't do. But without fishing he'd be happy to trade. I think we should do that. If only for the chopping bonus.
But The Hanging Gardens haven't been built yet either. Just saying. Not suggesting we should go for them. I think we're better off getting our economy up. What do you think?

One More Thing (TM)

I guess it is for OR.
But with random personalities, who knows?

Is that you, Hatty?

Notes for Scowler bobrath

I interrupted the barracks at Vienne to choprush the Axe later and use the overflow for the building since we get the 25% bonus on that. Please feel free to do so (or not) when you open the save or the turn after. Everything else is pretty much self-explanatory. ;)

I'm off to bed. :twitch:

Just realised that I've built the temple in Bibracte but did not employ a priest. Please ... :wallbash: ... please do so! :smoke:

I'm going to need a skip for this round so that I can concentrate on some work. Ironic since today is a bank holiday in the UK and should therefore be ideal for sending postcards . . . :p
