1.29 Semi-public beta

Accelerated Production is great for Multiplayer games. Speeds things up by a whole lot. I don't like it for Single Player, though.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this glitch. Right now, I'm playing on a computer generated map as France and I have contacted all other civs on the map. The glitch is that, when I go to my trade advisor, I cannot see a listing for America. All other civs are there (including civs I cannot trade with yet) and the Americans show up on all other advisor boards (Mil, Diplo, etc.)
I was wondering if this was a computer reaction to the recent political situation :die: or whether this is a real glitch.
(Brad -- I'll send you a saved game by e-mail)

Are you playing w/ more than 8 civs? If yes, try <control-shift-click> on one of the ? leaderheads to see if America is an option. I've experienced this before the 1.29 beta. Or, did I experience it on my Toshiba (Civ3 & PTW)?

Yeah, you'd most likely see this with more than 8 civs. Since you can see all the civs but america, you are most likely playing with 9 civs, right?

It's the same thing in all the patches; PTW included, so you may have experienced it in both, dojoboy.

hey anyone, why can't I unstuff this archive? I keep getting an "unsupported archive" error. any ideas? I'm concerned because It would appear that we are gonna need this beta for the next GOTM.

HELP!!

[edit]nevermind, I redownloaded it with camino and it seemed to work fine[/edit]

As far as I know, control-shift-clicking to switch leaderheads on the advisor screen when playing with more than eight civs is a funky but standard function of the game, rather than a glitch... a function which I didn't know how to use, and had repeatedly been on the verge of asking about on this forum.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know about this function. I have to say that this forum has really broadened my ability to actually get at the information on how to better play this game (in terms of being able to communicate with other civs, and other such trivial matters to gameplay).
On this subject, does anyone have a (relatively) comprehensive list of the hotbutton key options that may have been "missed" in the manual?
Thanks again,
JP

1) Old bug that has been present from the get-go. Even with all sounds off, from time to time I get a bird chirping sound. Woodlark.wav or Oriole.wav or possibly Skylark.wav.
2) I can play without the CD (Was that intended?).
3) Could be related to 2) above, I get crashes and my guess is that they are related to the missing CD when someone finishes a wonder. I will attempt to play _with_ the CD next. This was playing the first beta (b1?), as linked from the first post in this thread. See part of stdlog:

I just got some time to test the new 1.29b patch, and I noticed that every time a wonder completes, the game crashes. Specifically it crashes right before any one of the wonder mini-movies would pop up, stopping all progress after that point. Because of hardware problems with my primary computer, I have downgraded to an older one running OS 8.6 (which still meets the requirements). If the problem is limited to 8.6, I could let someone else run the half turn where the wonder is produced as a workaround, but it would obviously be more convinient if there were a way to avoid the crash.

Edit: here is a small save file set up to complete a wonder the next turn in case anyone else hasn't tested to this point.

Wow, have I been out of the loop!! I guess not getting enough sleep really does make a difference when browsing through forums! I think the appropriate sound effect to play would be a little sound file I have called "32 D'oh's of Homer". :) Now if you'll please excuse me, I'm gonna be downloading this beta now. Oh, almost forgot:

Everyone:THANKS BRAD!!
Brad: Who's your daddy?
Everyone: YOU ARE!!!

Thanks Brad! You da man!

I've played the Roman and Russian games with the first 1.29 patch on 10.2.5, and encountered odd problems late - sudden inability to build nukes, for instance - but not the wonder bug. I don't have the movies activated, for what it's worth.

I think we should expect hiccups with 1.29 on GOTM 19, although nothing on the level of the I/O error. Let's keep in touch regarding bugs either her or on the Mac tournament forum, so we can know where we stand, and what can be done about it, as soon as possible.

Thank you very much, Brad.
Especially, for spending your extra time!

I do not have enough time to do some test play, but I will play GOTM19 with this patch and let you know if I find something.

@dojoboy
It is encouraging to know that the crash does not occur with later OS versions. Maybe I'll just have to wait until the other computer is fixed.

@Txurce
How do you deactivate the wonder movies? I haven't seen an option to do so in the preference menus, but it could possibly provide a workaround for the crash. Apart from that issue, the new patch seems to be just as stable as 1.21g under OS 8.6 in tests up to the Middle Ages.

Zwingli, this is from the original readme file (and don't ask how I ever remembered this):

"When you start Civ III, a "Game Options" dialog box will appear. This dialog box allows you to choose from the following options (including):

"Don't Play Startup Movies: Skip the intro movies when you launch the game and go directly to the Main menu.

"Don't Ask Again: If you would rather not see this dialog every time you start Civ III, check this option. If you wish to change the settings at a later date, hold down the [Command] key on your keyboard and double-click on the Civ III application icon to display the 'Game Options' dialog box."

FYI, this doesn't (or at least shouldn't) affect the wonder movies. If it does, let me know.

I'm getting the same problem as Zwingli. Its the first game I've wanted to complete that I've nearly completed a wonder when I finally got the problem. I'm running Mac OS 9.1 on a 7300 upgraded to a G3/400, 272 MB memory.

My game settings:
Domination victory off, cultural victory off, preserve random seed off, respawn AI off.

I get an error number 1 every time I complete the wonder.

I had my memory set to the default, and I just upped it to 180MB and when I tried again this time I got an error number 2.

Let me know if you need the save game.

I also get a crash before the wonder splash screen. Quits to Finder with error type 2. Bumped memory allocation from default to 200MB and then error would sometimes be type 2 and sometimes type 3. This was my first wonder of the game - Forbidden Palace.

After several rounds of tests/crashes the machine finally locked completely.

OS 9.2.2, G4/533, 256MB

Going to re-install from CD (1.16) and then install 1.29b directly on top (skipping 1.17 & 1.21). Unfortunately, I trashed the save file along with the rest. Doh! And I had hopes for that game :wallbash:

I can provide apple system profiler report if that would be helpful.

follow-up:

did a clean install from CD (1.16) then directly to 1.29b. Started new game. Problem persisted - crash upon completion of wonder (Pyramids). Tried os 9.2.2 base extension set, problem persists. Tried removing all prefs/restarting, problem persists. Also tried renaming the wonder's pcx file and "Wonder Splash" folders - no change
