1.52 Patch Available

domlasta12
Well, when there was some patch for D2D version (probably it was 1.09), I managed to install it over DVD version. If you want to try that, PM me and I will tell which registry branch to rename.

Just beware that this might cause problems when official D2D patch becomes available - both uninstallations problems and further patching problems. I don't know what is the actual difference between D2D and DVD versions...

Berilac, I think the low resolution wonder movies are not available yet. But you can disable them altogether.
If you open the civ4 config file in Notepad, find the line where it says "NoMovies = 0" and change it to "NoMovies = 1" to disable the in-game movies. I did not try it as I do not experience crashes, but the option is there.

I've installed the new patch without any problems although I made sure I finished the game I was playing without the new patch and started a new one after the patch.

The new civelopedia is a lot more userfriendly and I don't see the healthbar battle outcome prediction anymore, but there are still some bugs unfixed:
- battle outcome still visible through EXP and HP
- Hitting Enter while in the civelopedia ends your turn (when hit Enter is onscreen below)
- The onmouseover popups still disappear sometimes

I also didn't see any performance improvements while loading/playing the game, although I'm still in an early stage of the game and the performance has always been relatively good there. It also helps to set the gamedirectories in a realtime virusscan-exclusion folder. (be sure to scan any new mods or other files manually if you do this)

I still hope that Firaxis will come up with a few new leaders/countries (esp. the Netherlands for me) very soon, so I don't have to use or download any selfmade mods. I'm a little wary to use these as for most other games they mean nothing but trouble.

Anyway, it's beginning to look a lot like a real off-the-shelves game now instead of a betatesting program.

so what if you downloaded the game from d2d like i did? the patch wont work for me?

You have to wait for a specific d2d version of the patch, which you get from the d2d pages. The last version (1.09) appeared on d2d some days after the "normal" patch version was released.

Civ4 was written specifically with modders in mind, so it's much easier to write a mod that doesn't mean trouble. Also, you can install them in a way that the normal game installation isn't changed at all. Every mod has its own folder, and if you don't specifically load it from the game menu, it won't influence your game at all.

I'm not sure what you mean with "very soon", but Firaxis won't provide new leaders or countries with patches. This is expansion material. They may try to make a first expansion for christmas 2006, but certainly not earlier. So I wouldn't expect an official Dutch civilization earlier - it may even take longer, because the expansion might appear later, or the Dutch might not be included in the first expansion.

I will add some more to it:

1) In 1.09 I managed to perss 'next turn' being in 'city view' screen. I think this remained in 1.52

2) It is also possible to press 'next turn' from the globe view (this problem is inherited since C3C/SMAC with their zooming) - especially pleasant quirk being at tight-like-a-chess-game war with someone...

I discovered why I was still seeing evidence of the Harkonnen fix after I installed 1.52. It's because 1.52 didn't install correctly. I wasn't seeing the new features that are supposed to be in the game. I tried downloading the patch directly and going through the process again but it still would not update. Had to uninstall the game, re-install it then run the 1.52 patch before it got updated.

It still doesn't run any faster than it did before, and now I have the bugeyed leader pictures. Wonder movies still stutter. I don't get "Merry Christmas from Harkonnen" anymore when starting the game, but it does occasionally crash when I first start the game now. Wasn't doing that before. Sigh.

Thanks, I did that and it works great now, I would still like for the movies to work at some point, I hope they can get that cleared up soon. But it seems to be working again nice and smooth.

Thanks for the help.

I'm fairly confident that the Low Resolution Movies won't help out in terms of the stuttering. I downloaded the Bink video player in order to play the movies outside of Civ4, and when unthrottled they run at a BLAZINGLY fast speed, so the resolution of the movies isn't causing any types of issues. I proceeded to try and play the movies with AA and AF set to the highest my card could handle, and again I did not see any type of slowdown. The only time the movies are slow are when Civ4 is running at the same time. What I'm going to try and do this coming weekend is run the Bink movies through the Bink Video Player with various CPU/RAM intensive programs running at the same time. I'll run Prime95 and the movies to see if the CPU is what's causing the bottleneck, and I'll also run MEMTEST86 and the movies to see if it's a RAM issue. In both cases, I'll set the stress-testing software to highest priority and the movies to below normal priority to ensure that the test work out. I'm really begining to think that there's something going on with how the movies are loaded which is causing all the issues.

(If it's a hard drive swapping issue, why can't some memory be freed up prior to the movie loading and then load the entire movie file into RAM? The files are pretty small so it shouldn't take up a ton of RAM to move them in there. This could be why the initial movies work just fine, but later on in the game they run horribly slow. It seems as if the game is trying to load the movie into RAM but there isn't enough physical RAM available so it swaps it to the HDD which results in the stuttering and slowdowns. The software should know that a wonder movie will be played on a certain turn, so why couldn't there be a delay before the turn starts where certain pieces of data which won't be needed for a while gets swapped to the virtual memory in order to free up some Physical RAM for the movies? The movie could play, then once it's done the data that was moved to the virtual RAM could be moved back to the Physical RAM. This should be able to speed things up a bit. I wonder if it would be possible to get a listing of how much RAM people have and what the status of their virtual memory is at the time of a movie slowdown?)

I don't know what happened, but that text is stored in this file:
Assets\XML\Text\CIV4GameText_Misc1.xml (line 8832)

If you open up the file in notepad and go to that line number or search for AUTOSAVE, you should see the entry along with translations for different languages.

If that file or line isn't there, then your xml files didn't install correctly. Also, do you have that same file in your custom assets folder? Maybe that's causing a conflict...
Thank you man, it was custom assets thing.

Sugestion for everyone: before I install 1.52, I deleted all files in CustomAssets folder and sub-folders. I think it's a mandatory action before installing new patches, because some files will be overwritten and existing files in CustomAssets may conflict with these newer game files.

I think Firaxis should create a warning during update process, with an option to clean everything inside CustomAssets (a simple question like "Do you want to clean all files in CustomAssets folder? Yes/No").

I'm late to the patch but these changes are so good. No more crashes when memory usage crosses the 1 GB barrier (My machine has 2GB).

Ok all these little tricks for installing and uninstalling things are getting a little overboard. Why does someone have to be either a coder or mcse just to install a game.
Firaxis,
What is going on here. Your patch has not made the game playable in its later stages. I do not understand. You made the earlier game playable. Yet I get to the 1600-1700 and it dies a horrible death. The best is it is different everytime. New errors pop up, ctd, hard lock, black screen, blue screen. I have never seen so many different errors in a game.
I am very frustrated and disappointed in your work, your game and your communication.

So as you can see that is completely useless.

When can we expect to see a product for our hard earned money,
or a way for us to get a refund.

Are you working on more fixes?

Do you even care?

Or was I right the first post I put up when I stated the real fix for everyone will come out with the expansion pack. Hook line and sinker.

Please Help,

Every time i attempt to install the 1.52 patch i get the following problem

"Error 1706.No valid source could be found for
product Sid Meier's "

The installation continues afterwards but I’m pretty sure it does not fully install the patch. For instance the "Memorysavor" addition in the .ini file is not present

Any help would be great!!

Right on! My comp is above the recommended specifications and I still have insane problems. Time for fix or for money back soon or Shablul get very very angry

PS - I, however, did not install that 3rd party patch some of you are so up in arms about, so please don't yell at me about unjustified negativity :) Firaxis ain't our friends; they just want our dough. I want my dough back unless they fix this patch stat.

Peace :king:

This sounds like some errors that happened with the 1.09 patch. I believe the solution was a clean install. You have to uninstall complete and then reinstall. Not sure, but I think I remember that. Anyone else?

:( I tried that unfortunetly ... And no luck yet.

- the first time I patched from outside the game
- After re-installing i did it from inside the game and still the same problem
