Maps are amazing historical documents IMO and I strongly recommend anyone interested to click the links I provided above. There are literally hundreds of such maps in those links; large scale, with notes made by cartographers and explorers, and they are what the explorers in question actually used!
Their notion of exploring was similar to the interest we pay today to something like the Mars explorer.
