The women are really having a rough go of it today on the snowboard cross course. Quarter-finals are about to start - it'll be interesting to see how things go with 4 on the course at a time.

edit: And it's another gold medal for Canada! Congrats to Maelle Ricker for winning gold in the women's snowboard cross. :)

It turns out the "Zamboni" machines are some knock-off brand. They are sending real Zambonis to Vancouver to try to fix the ice.

I almost died laughing this afternoon during the US mens curling match. The talking head was claiming you had to be in peak physical shape to do curling. He claimed that sweeping is a lot more rigorous than it looks. I guess that explains why the women frequently pass out from the exertion.

I watched curling for the first time today. It looks like a great sport, if you know enough about. I had to leave in the seventh end of the US/Germany game. Who won?

In the women's biathlon pursuit the held some of the skiers to long at the start, among them Anna-Carin Olofsson-Zidek that finished fourth. In the men's event the opposite happened when Leguellec started 33 seconds to fast, leading the spectators to believe the Canadian had a shot at the medals. In general the arrangements have been lacking, it seems like they are only interested in hosting the hockey tournament and put amateurs in charge of the other events.

The Olympias are supposed to be more environmentally friendly than Zambonis so those were initially being used to keep in theme with the 'green' building. But they're crap, so regular Zambonis were being brought in.

It is turning out to be a 24-hour a day party. Thousands and thousands of people on the streets by Robson Square and the Olympic torch, by outdoor large screen TVs from countries all over the world having a great time.

Tomorrow I will be off to the first event we have tickets for - round robin men's curling. This is turning out to be so much fun!!

Downtown after the hockey game last night was crazy. I can't compare it to any thing I've ever experienced before.

RedFred, Orange Seeds:

I'm contemplating a day trip to Vancouver on Monday, just to take everything in. Do you think it'd be worth the $84 travel costs (roundtrip on PCL bus to guarantee transportation downtown & a spot on the ferry) just to soak up the atmosphere downtown? It seems like a lot for a day trip, but at the same time this is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing I might regret not going to.

And how early do things get started? The first three sailings would get me to the Vancouver bus depot at 8:30am, 9:30am, or 11:30am. And would I be OK to catch the 9pm sailing back (leave downtown at 7:30pm) or would I probably want to stay later (until 10:30pm) and grab the midnight sailing back?

From my experience of such events (European Cup 08), I just can advise you to go! Great experience and it'd be a pity for you to miss it if you live so close. I mean people are travelling to Vancouver from all over the world for this! And definately stay until the medals ceremony if you can ;)

Because you beat Norway?

Let's see who wins the US - Canada game on the 21st...

the morning is pretty quiet. Things don't start up until about noon, but it would grant you time to wander around downtown before you settle into a crowd somewhere. You are going to want to stay as late as possible. Things got fun last night after people came out after the Canada-Norway game and there have been fireworks and parties that I can hear from my house(way over on 19th and Oak) starting around 9:00.

I'd recommend heading over. I'd also try and do it on a day where there is a men's hockey game. The atmosphere last night was greater then the last few and i believe it was because of the hockey game.

Yeah, I really think you fail to understand the passion behind the game of hockey in this city(and country). You could have had us play Nepal and there would be the same reaction.

jeeez, that jump by pärson looked insane :cringe:

A medal ceremony would be awesome to see. But to stay that late, I'd be taking the midnight sailing back, which - if everything's on time - would get me to the bus depot at 2:20am. Then I'd have to get a cab home. And I'd probably have to work the next day (though I could probably get the morning off). My boyfriend would definitely have to work the next day.

So if I took the 7am ferry, and got downtown around 9:30, that would give me lots of time to figure out which venues I want to check out, and line up early if need be. I wonder how the line-up for the zipline would be at that point in the morning...

I don't know that I can make it on the day of a men's hockey game. If my boyfriend wants to head over too, then I'm stuck picking a day he's already got scheduled off. That pretty much leaves Monday (I don't think he has any other days off next week). But if he doesn't want to come along, I could go just about any day I wanted except this weekend (plans already).

You think I've never watched Mystery, Alaska?

Adria - forget about the zipline. I looked at the lineup yesterday... around 4.5 hours. There are 500 people lined up at 7 in the morning and it doesn't even start until 10 AM.

Check out the torch, BC Place, Robson Street, and some of the international houses or the pavilions. I am hoping to make it to the o-zone down by the Richmond Oval tomorrow.

Better still if you have tickets to events. This week I picked up a couple more at cost from Craigslist of all places.

Every team plays every other qualifying team. Based on the results the top four teams advance to the medal round.

There will be four curling matches going simultaneously tomorrow AM as part of the round robin.
