2011 MLB Thread

How much luster did the Phillies lose when they lost 2 of 3 to the Giants just a few weeks ago at Citizens Bank Park?

I think the luster being referred to is:
Before this 'exibition' the Giants were not disliked, as most champions are... and now not so much. Like I said- throw out the guy stealing second instead of beaning the guy at bat cause your catcher suks. :mischief:

Oh come on. Beaning a guy stealing a bag with a six run lead is now cause for concern from the moral city upon a hill of Philadelphia? Please.

Not Philly, baseball in general. Would have been a ruff go in Mayberry, NC for that matter.

Why should you not steal a base regardless of score? :scan:

You should be able to steal a base anytime. I have no problem with running up the score. However running the risk of the pitcher getting pissed and beaning you is also part of the game.

Pitcher is also running the risk of having his arse handed to him on a plate... in my world.

 you guys are old school. i like it :) philly did lose some luster when the dropped 2 of 3 last wk to sf. there were articles in the papers and internet saying that the giants were in their heads.....whatever that means in july.

Victorino is a punk as is too.

Do explain your reasoning as the only arguments for Victorino being a punk and deserving to be hit are that he has a weird face. I like to see something reasonable.

Edit: Ok now I call bulls**t. Vic gets a 3 day suspension and a huge fine plus Polly gets fined. Whiteside and the pitcher only get small fines and no suspension. Whiteside TACKLED Polanco and now he needs surgery! Can you make it any more obvious that you are in bed with the Giants and hate the phils MLB? Gahhhhhh!

Him gesturing at Karudo in 2008 said a lot to me, he's an instigator, and he got thrown from CF for arguing calls.

If you don't have a problem with a base being stolen... you have to have a problem with the pitcher.

If you have a problem with a base being stolen with a big lead... hit the biggest guy or the guy stealing the base! Or better yet, confront him after the game. ;)

Let's see, hit the little Hawaiian, or hit Howard :mischief: ... yes, luster gone. :scan:

 nice one, Al :D you have a good memory or you pay attention to philly sports extraordinarily well for a Northern Virginian :p i remember the game where he was thrown out for arguing from CF  never saw that before.

being objective here, i can see why folks may not like vic. he's spunky and is high energy. but he's got issues if you believe in this stuff (i do).

It's more of the anti-Philly sports in me than anything else. ;) I'd love him as a Nat, but he just rubs me the wrong way as an opponent. And frankly, that's probably a good thing to have in a player.

In 4 years, I expect all of you to be complaining of the same issues for Bryce Harper.

 Owen, you're worrying about what some mgr said 3,000 miles away? lincecum has won a few CYAs. why fret? you should be worrying about that offense and the fact that Arizona is breathing down the Giants' neck. beltran is overrated and so far, he surely has not made any difference. i would take pence over beltran a thousand times over.

 The only difference, of course, is that you are unloading millions of dollars for Pence, and had to give up a ton of good prospects, whereas we are essentially paying absolutely nothing for Beltran. The Phillies are going to be having some real problems 5 years down the line, it looks like to me.

dude, you're out of your mind. you gave away a top prospect for a rental player who has a suddenly slow bat. he's a bum. trust me. i've seen him play in the NL east 18 times a year for the last half decade. that is when he's not hurt. pence any day old boy. the kid can rake. 5 years down the line? i'll review the hardware when the time comes and we can compare. what say you?

Wheeler? Have you seen his minor league stats?!?! He's decent, but we have soooo many damned pitching prospects. I'm saying you're going to be hurting 5 years down the line because you guys keep giving up prime prospects and signing really long deals to aging players. What are you going to do when Howard, Lee, and Halladay crap out with 2 or 3 years left on their contracts? Trust me, from someone who had to endure a couple years of overpaying one player who was on the decline, it's not going to be fun.

As a distinguished fellow I know from here said- you have to give up something to get something. ;)

As for what happens 5 yrs from now, in baseball 'the time is now' IMO for the most part. You never know about most 'prospects'.

that's the nature of the beast. all in. sure there will be some issues in a few years. cliche and all but they'll cross that bridge when they get there etc. the phils have a year or two window with this team, maybe more depending on how the aging process unfolds. but i don't buy your assertion that getting pence hurts them down the line. he's under control for a few years, is young (sort of), and has been an instant fan favorite. howard will get pitches to hit. it's just a win-win all the way around. i'd be pissed if i was a giants fan watching beltran and his slow-ass bat flailing at pitches. look at the bright side though: he'll be gone in 2012 :)

The Giants had to do something and after Pence Beltran was probably the best impact guy they could land. Their best hitter is Huff, what with his .244 AVG, and they already have a top of the line rotation for the next few years. They could afford to lose a pitching prospect for a guy who, while perhaps over the hill career wise, is doing well this year and therefore probably a fine choice as a 2 month rental.

For the worst offense in the league, even Carlos Beltran is an improvement. Look at it that way.
