2011 MLB Thread

For how long? He's been kind of meh this year, hasn't he?

Well, not playing in a launching pad might help him out. Don't know what his road numbers look like though.

Until 2013 I think. (2012 under contract, 2013 club option). He has been meh this year, but he was one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2009, and even a meh version of him would be helpful in the AL Central. Stinks to give up Alex White though...I hope we didn't give up too much!

Also Owen, looks like we gave you Orlando Caberea for a minor league OF? You know anything about him?

I have no idea, but I'll ask my roommate now!

*EDIT* Asked him!

Me: Dude
did you hear we got Orlando Cabrera?

Roommate: cha

Me: What's the deal on who we gave up for him?
Some minor league OF apparently?

Roommate: thomas neal, i knew the guy
seemed like he was solid, but a career minor leaguer

Me: hmmm
Cabrera seems to have pretty decent career numbers
272/319/392/710

Roommate: yea but hes 36
on the decline sorta
but between him and when tejada gets back we should get but
i still think if tejada comes back healthy, he will be able to give us something

Me: so then was it a salary clearing play by the Injuns then?
I can't imagine why they'd give him up for a career minor leaguer

Roommate: well thomas has got some upside, but cabrera isn't a long term solution, and i think they got some depth at the position, so it was a good deal

We were dealing Caberea either way...he was a free agent, and we have two strong 2nd base candidates in the minors...I think he knew he was only going to be a placeholder until Phelps or Kipnis was ready.

He isn't a terrible hitter...he's a good bench bat kind of guy.

The Braves loose 10,000 and the Phils finally get a sweep. Good weekend for baseball :).

There was much more to that conversation than what I put down; I only transcribed the bits relevant to you.

he's really going to make a difference for that lineup. naysayers will claim he is overrated etc. but i guarantee r howard will see more pitches to hit. it is the protection. and his energy. wow. been saying how the fans will love this dude. the New & Improved Slim Shady.

Sure Pence will have a nice impact but his .370 BABIP is completely unsustainable. The protection will by far be the biggest improvement over Dom Brown (Who I can't wait to see back in September to replace Raul in late game). I'm also afraid that the Phils gave up too much for him. Cosart and Singleton is already ALOT let alone 2 other prospects.

batting average on balls in play? not interested too much in that stat unless it's slanted heavily one way or the other. brown simply isn't ready. that's the cold hard fact. let him learn the new position in lehigh valley and check back in 2012. he is the 2012 Opening Day LF. i will gladly take the gamble of giving up on 2 singe A prospects for what pence offers. add in his contract status where the phils have him in their control for a few years and it's a no-brainer. the odds that cosart and singleton become all stars are remote. they did not even rank in the top50 MLB prospects iirc. there will likely be a new set of prospects that grade out just like them in a year's time. win now old boy :)

Whatever good Wade did with the Pence trade, I'm pretty sure he wiped it out with the Bourn trade. Ugh.

Actually a high BABIP for a hitter is reflective of a hitter's skills. Pitcher BABIP is where you question really high or low numbers since that indicates future regression, as the stat is mostly based on luck and defense behind the mound.

But for a hitter, the hitter has more control over this variable as it has a lot to do with where hitters place the ball, how hard they hit it, how fast they are, etc. I.e. a .370 number for Pence is actually a good sign that he is making solid contact.

Don't take my word for it though! Source.

sabre-head :p

just would like to note how surprising it is to some that classical_hero's beloved Arizona Diamondbacks now have a share of 1st place in the NL West. who'da-thunk-it?

Aaaaaaand now they don't. Where did that offensive outburst come from?!!?
