2011 MLB Thread

Yowsa. :goodjob: God knows how many times we had to win that ballgame, and I dunno how the Phillies managed to keep it close.

Clifton Phifer who ?

Worst strikezone in the history of the sport for both sides. I cannot comprehend how Meals is possible a MLB umpire.

This is from the 8th couldn't find one later, plus it's zone size is quite conservative.

Plus Lee apparently had an FIP of 1.25 and the Cards had a BABIP of over .500. Absurd... simply absurd.

Edit:

This is from Lee's 4th the ball in the upper corner of the strikezone was the walk that started the whole mess of an inning.

Agree on the umpire. Worst of all, he wasn't calling stuff consistently, with Lee's pitches on the inside edge to Molina being (I think) the best example. Neither batter, nor pitcher, nor catcher could have had any idea whether they were going to be called as balls or strikes.

the strike zone was a little unpredictable. but that doesn't stop the Cucumber from hitting his spots. he was missing them and he got hit around. carpenter looked like kyle kendrick with 3 hours sleep let alone 3 days rest.

to make excuses about the umpire at this point is, well, deflective. phils got beat, cards ponied up when it mattered, and looky here - pujols beat them.

Does someone want to explain how umpire errors improve the game? Because last time i asked nobody had an answer. We can improve it. We have the technology.

I would like to see at least some fixes to the strikezone problem. However if the zone is consistent I really don't have a problem unless it's ungodly tiny. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ump acc. tries to remove the strike tracker on TV because of the awful zones of West and Meals.

I remember the old "catcher just needs to sit outside and if the pitch is to his mitt it's a strike" days. I hated that. The K zone has gotten smaller in modern baseball, a lot smaller.

Go Tigers! :goodjob:

the strike zone has absolutely shrunk over the years. i remember when it was from the letters to the knees. rarely do they call pitches strikes above the belly button.

and the laugher of the day: yanks season rests on AJ Burnett :twitch:

Ah, the good ole days. I'm just making a guess on personal observation, but the smaller K Zone seems a result of post strike, steroid era, get home runs and forget about good baserunning late 90s baseball.

Go Tigers!

Yankees did not want to start AJ at all this series. Guess the rain made things horrible in other games. This is the perfect chance for Detroit to close it out. If they don't win tonight, I don't think they'll win game 5 either.

That's nothing; it used to be shoulders to knees.

I don't think I could watch baseball every day, you know. I mean, I'd like to and all, but my nerves just can't take this stuff. A double steal, fine. With Pujols and Berkman ? Hell, I guess no-one was expecting that. Hamels did well though - didn't faze him at all (unfortunately :))

Argh. From the department of second guessing, I would have pinch hit Holliday for Garcia in the bottom of the 6th with men on 1st and 2nd. I know his pitch count was low, but it was a key AB, and Hamels was done. And we don't expect Garcia to go deep regardless. Sigh.

I also wouldn't have walked Ruiz to get to the pitcher's spot - they're pulling Hamels out anyway, why make it easy for the Phils to get the benefit of the timing of the pitching change ? Double sigh.

shoulders? never hear that one before ;) maybe in the dead ball era...but from the 70s on into the early 90s + or -, it was surely the letters (across the front of the jersey) to the knees.

The strike zone was altered in 1969 after the year of the pitcher.

Ouch. Well, we had our chances, we had our hits, and we didn't convert. Painful loss.

We still need two wins, just as we did before the game. ;)
