He said that my story is "possibly too allegorical and so there is no clear axis. It will not be published".
I thought this was a bit too ludicrous as a reply, as if i was asking for money or some favor :/ So i replied that i wish a good continuation (for the mag) and i will not be sending anything else.
Uh, what? Do i want helpful advice about getting more publications? Not really, why does this surprise you? It is not the OP either so as i said, get back to topic if you must carry on. As for pat in the back ( ), maybe recall your own round and arabian number of printed works before trying to be dismissive.
Okay, then. EXCUUUUUUUSE ME for trying to be helpful and encouraging. I certainly won't do it again.
Considering you don't seem to mind whether or not you're paid, do NOT come at me with your condescending attitude. I've had articles, poems, puzzles, filksongs, and stories printed in quite a few places... well before the Internet Age. No, they're not pro... but then apparently some of your 22 stories aren't, either.
I don't like to blow my literary trumpet as a rule, honest, but speaking as (I think) the only person here who's actually been paid for writing books, I can say that any criticism by a potential publisher is worth its weight in gold. In fact, the more negative, the more helpful it is, although it can be heart-rending to receive.
In the academic world, the most important work is also published for free: academic journals do not pay authors; but it is vital for anyone in academia to publish many pieces in them, so there is incredible competition. It is very, very, hard to publish papers in top academic journals, and it's a long and unpleasant business with lots of rejection. As this song describes:
I have had rejections from journals that went into long and deeply upsetting detail about precisely why my paper was unworthy for publication, but if they hadn't done that I wouldn't have known how to improve it, and subsequently get it published. There is nothing more unpleasant, for a writer, than receiving negative criticism, but it's essential.
In the case of Kyriakos' rejection, it sounds like the reason was that the story wasn't appropriate for the magazine, rather than that it wasn't good enough. This is also valuable advice, because the number one mistake by all fledgling writers (both fiction and academic) is sending their stuff to a publisher, journal, or agent who doesn't deal with that kind of writing. I'd also add that even if you feel a rejection is unreasonable, it would be very, very unwise to get a reputation in the industry for being difficult to work with, because editors, publishers, and agents network with each other all the time. In a world where there is such massive competition that the gatekeepers will seize on any justification for rejecting a MS (even being printed in the wrong colour), such a reputation could greatly mess up your chances of success.
Thanks for your action as an intervention, Plotinus.
And yeah, being paid is not the end-all, particularly for periodicals. They are far more useful as means of gaining more readers, due to a good number of them having thousands of copies bought in many cities, and while obviously not all who buy one will focus on a particular writer in it, on the other hand a book will sell as many copies in a longer time and to a less drawn-out audience. So periodicals for literature are a great choice for having work accepted and printed. FWIW i keep my best work for the book(s), but almost all my printed fiction is (in my view) of a good level so as to represent me to the readers.
Okay, then. EXCUUUUUUUSE ME for trying to be helpful and encouraging. I certainly won't do it again.
