2nd attempt; space armarda

yo go to spidweb.com!?!?! sweet!

as a general notic I stronglly advise EVERYONE to download the demo for one of the Avernum games on that website- then try playing for a little while- it will have the most pulling story line EVERY (I love it, and I usually despise RPGs....)

My attempt at recreating the star map that was posted earlier in the thread... Im still wotking oon the graphics for the stars...

Good game, try Geneforge out as well...

I dont like geneforge as much as Avernum- i have Geneforge 1, and the demo for two, and whiule the only RPGs I like, they are no where near the aweosmness of the avernum series

I'd recommend breaking up the asteroid belts ... in reality, asteroids tend to be concentrated in fields when they are at all, and most asteroid belts are quite sparse (one ' roid for every thousand of miles, for instance ... not what comes to mind when one thinks of asteroids).

Galactic core looks good, shame I don't have a MAC though, cant try it out. :(

I'm going away for the weekend, & when I get back I'm going to start animating the units. I'll start with the least technologicly advanced ones and work up, so that hopefully I should be able to finish at least the first era, and begin putting together a Beta test mod.

I kile your star map and terrain Celeborn, it'll make a good test bed.

I've been having some ideas for alien races, and I'll post some "concept ships" after the weekend (got them modeled so far, but no skins). If anyone else has any good alien race ideas I'd like to hear them, the main thing is that they have to be belivable, be restricted to a starting tech level near to earths, and have a plausable reason for not showing up in seti-searches by us. Try to run up a evolutionary history before a social history, and what I'm not looking for is "human like" races with point ears, I want real Aliens! (but with the possibility of developing along a near human tech tree, perhaps with some flavour).

I noticed you posted a texture you use to help you out, here's one I use to fix any stretching problems and such:

I have that in .TGA too if you want it.

i think a good alien is one that has a better natural weapons for defense instead of just having a deveoped brain. like claws, stingers poison, etc. since you have to learn each other's languages to communicate, you can make it so that you need deep space travel to get to the ailens contact, and make intersteller communication required for mpps, rop, military alliances, and stuff.

maybe an alien can just be a red alien that has 4 arms, with 3 fingers each excluding the 3 claws, amphibious, lives in a ocean of mercury, has very developed senses since mercury is silvery in color, not the best eyesight in the galaxy, but the best sense of smell, hearing, and has the ability to detect electrical impulses from the nerveous systems of animals just like sharks can. since my alien is amphibious, it lives in the water and lays eggs on land. the land is filled with valuable minerals, but the air is thick with chlorine, and the alien can only tolerate it for 20 minutes. it's young however, starts by breating chlorine in, and eventually goes to the mercury "water" because of abundance of food. after it eats it's first underwater meal, it loses it's ability to breath chlorine. the species became sentient and intelegent before many bennifits were evolved for anything to do with the chlorine.

How about an alien race that communicate through smell? ;)

Anyways, the Race (they even call themselves that) from the World War series by Harry Turtledove would be a nice additon. They are called Lizards by the human, and they call themselves the Race.

Aliens ona planet with an extremely dense ionoshpere wouldn't be able to communicate through the atmosphere, by radio. That would solve the SETI problem. A planet like this would half to be very large, otherwise the ionosphere would "disolve" as it were into space. Any creature living on a planet with such high gravity would probably have an exoskeleton made of some sort of natural metal or carbon structure. Under water, the most likely place to find life, the creatures would be under incredable pressures. They would probably have no need for eyes, since the denses atmosphere would absorb a lot of the incoming light. The would most likely be chemotrophs, living off of what seems to us to be extremely poisonous chemicals emited by thermal vents (we already know of animals like this that live at the bottom of our ocean, once deemed completely inhabbital). As evolution progress to land locked life, if it did take that evolutionary path, these creatures would be subject to massive storms/hurricanes. Due to this, they probably would have some mechanism of keeping grounded, claws or molecular binding, something like that. They would also need to be able to live off of a number of different gasses, such as: hydogen, helium, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide, argon, etc... Most gasses you'd find on planets like Jupiter and Saturn. I'm guessing a snake shaped body, as taking steps would put large amounts of pressure on their "legs." Maybe shaped like a snake, with powerful scales. Comsuming its prey with acid released through pores, and the disolved mush sucked back up the same way. It would manipulate its world with tentacle-like limbs, as solid bones would porbably be crushed be the weight. The absense of light would cause different senses to develop, maybe sonic imaging. The dense "air" would lead to highly developed hearing, but underdeveloped smell. I guess you see where I'm going with this... As you can see, I always type lengthy post when I'm interested with the topic, :D.

A mostly boilogical race like the Terranids from the Warhammer 40K might be a good one... You cant track them with SETI because they dont have radio and comunicate through nueral synapses... "Hive Minds"

The way I have my terrain set-up, is that cities can only be built on the three different planet types, Earth-like(ocean world) Mars-Like (rock world) and the gas gaints... The way I see it ocean world would give equal measure of commerce and industry, rocks give more industry and little (no) commerce and gas vice versa...
If you go with the idea that food is solar power then the could all give the same amount of food.... Also my systems are devided into inner and outer system, inner system provides more food and outer system less..., but the inner system can lead to solar radiation/flares (disease)... Im still working on more ideas...

*Start brain-wave*
Or maybe both types of system space provide the same amount of food to begin with but innersytem gets a greater bonus from building "solar satelites" (farms, if you can come up with a better idea for a name go ahead), opinions, ideas and flames would be appreciated...
*End brain-wave*

that unit can be a type of space battle ship, like one that is powered by anti matter engines, and have both projectile, explosive, and antimatter cannons, to counter any single type of sheild ships have.

i was thinking, since there is 10 dimensions as mentioned in the string theory, what if it is possible to just travel into the 4th 5th 6th or maybe even 7th dimension to travel faster. since we are not awhare of the 4th dimension and up, we take a longer route if we go thrugh the 3rd dimension traveling. just like it is faster to travel the alaskan route if you are going to china or some place instead of going straight thrugh the pacific.

after giving some thought in time travel to the past, there are 2 possibilities: 1: you can not return to your own timeline, only the altered time 2: you can return, but nothing is changed, regardless of how bad you screw up in the past. if into the future, then #2 dosent apply.

The only know, feasible way to travel back in time is to: take one mouth of a wormhole, spin it near the speed of light, and hop through. Unfortunatly, you can only go back as far as the wormhole has existed, i.e. to the point that you made the wormhole. Most other options require bending or cutting the fabric of space-time, which would require to much gravity an energy, AFAIK.

i read in a packet or what ever those things are called, that you can use a piece of black hole material 10 times the mass of the sun, spagettify the black hole, spin it a few thousand revolutions a minute, and fly in loops around it. stay away from the edges and this therietically, can take you anywhere, anywhen.

another one is useing cosmic strings, shoot 2 togeather, and fly ina figure 8 around the collison point. therietically, it can take you billions of years into the past, or future and possible several galaxies away.

a friend told me this one: get a powerful source of gravity, like a black hole. dip close to the event horizon, but dont go there. because gravity makes people objects, and other stuff age slower and slower, when you come out , more time has passed for the fabric of space time away from the black hole, than you.
