4 wonders per city

Hello,

After a long(ish) break from civ4 i now came back and installed the game + the mod

While playing it tho I noticed that I cant build more than 4 world wonders per city so i rushed to the files talking about this and wanted to modify it to allow me to build more wonders (considering the amount of wonders tehre are in the game currently you would need a lot of cities to build them ...) BUT to my surprise the MAX_WORLD_WONDERS_PER_CITY setting was already set to 7 ... !?

If thats true, why cant i build more than 4 per city ? (same goes for national wonder, 6 is maximum in my game while the file says its 8 ...)

What am i missing ? am i editing the wrong file ? (GlobalDefines.xml)
 
The default mechanic allows an increasing number of Wonders per city ass that city's culture grows. Each cultural expansion grants an extra national and great wonder to its build limit. This was done to help give a strategic boost to culture.

This i didnt know. Finally culture something useful :D

Couldn't agree more. Its a nice feature to have. Normally I would avoid culture investment, really no point in it but now, its finally of some use this culture ...
 
Wow... I did not know that culture was underlying that mechanism either. Between the Developing Leaders and this, we're really giving culture a lot more pull! And yet somehow it still feels like it can't compare to espionage and especially research. But its still a lot more valuable in C2C than it is in Vanilla BtS!

Thanks for this info, it might come in handy later on. At the moment I think im ok with how it is set up.

Can't you just use the game option for that? Or does this only affect world wonders, I never really noticed (although I play with that option all the time).
 
I expect Snofru1 is just wasting his time fiddling with the files, since you can turn off the limits via the game option and the game options turns off the limits for all types of wonders, I think.

BTW, there is also an interesting entanglement with the Realistic Culture Spread option when not using the unlimited wonders option. With Realistic Culture Spread on there are more culture levels (2 more, I think it is) so you end up with higher wonder limits in each city and the wait between a couple of the levels is shorter since it inserts the new levels between existing levels without changing the culture requirements for those levels.

The option grants you unlimited wonders. I for one want some limits otherwise single cities can become the ultimate city, just not 4 per city. I think the normal limits set by the realistic culture thing is fine but in case I change my mind, the info that the above poster provided, i will be able to use such info to raise the limits.


Note, raise limits not completely removing them as the game option does.
 
I like unlimited wonders! If the wonders cost enough to build, which at least in the first era they do now, it should be nearly impossible to capture them all in one city. Plus, there is a big downside in playing to have the one supercity - its constantly trying to keep up in building its buildings and then to have to build all your units as well? You can really end up being drastically undermilitarized in relation to the AI nations! And just as soon as you think you're ready to start building your army now... blam there's another wonder opened up that's going to take another 5-10 turns to build!

I disagree. Its too easy to pile stacking Wonders into very specialized cities (lots of military Wonders in one, science in another, gold in another) without limits. With the limits obviously you can still do this to some extent, but it's more controlled and you have to go for 2-3 'specialized' cities in each category. It also serves to limit run-away-leader effects, since if you can stack unlimited Wonders then you can always use your highest production cities, and simply teching a Wonder first almost always means you also get to build it first. Without unlimited Wonders you have to prioritize more since you're having to use lower production cities.
 
Just a thought, what about a "cooldown" after a city build a wonder? Like: "After incredebly hard work the people of Thebes just finished the Pyramides! Now they want to make their own buisness for a while (can't build another wonder for X turns)"

Hmm, I always thought the game option is only about World Wonders and not National Wonders, at least in the info text only World Wonders are mentioned. I could be wrong, of course.

I am not totally against wonder limits, but I hate it, if some outdated wonders fill up my slots until the end of time. Having the culture effect is a good starting point, but not enough IMO.

The suggestion from Faustmouse sounds interesting, too, but I would prefer to have an era specific wonder limit (can build 2 or 3 wonders in a city every era).

Well that is kinda of what happens already. If you reach the wonder limit for that city you cannot build more until your culture increases and opens up another slot for one.

Yeah, but that's just a side effect from limited wonders. I thought my idea could replace the "artificial" or hard limit and make it more soft.

it depends upon the length of X. If it was like thousands of turns then perhaps you could get more wonders in your city using the culture system than your idea. it all comes down to control. Using the culture method you have some control in manipulating what your culture level will be by adding buildings and such. While if its a fixed amount of turns you have no control at all other than knowing it will be X number of turns. Which can be anything from 10 turns to 10,000 turns.

Both are "artificial" and are "hard limits".
