5CC Space Race interest thread

AW can be scary, your whole game changes. All the 'best practices' for regular games go out the window, especially if there is a no trade rule. Instead of Republic, you want Monarchy. Instead of not building Walls and Barracks everywhere, you build many. Chokepoints and killzones become very important. Having good UU's and traits are important. Read some of TheRats SGs and you'll see more stuff about AW.

Sounds to me like you guys should NOT worry about this, since you play as the faster researching Russia than India. 30 turns sounds like plenty of time. On top of this, you could always sell a library/university, and then re-build it if culture becomes a problem. Or you could mobilize at a strategic point.

1. True--but I think that we actually have enough luxuries plus two MPs plus two freebies at Monarch that we won't have any significant issues there that a 10% lux rate won't solve (and that we would need for our other cities anyway).

2. I'm actually not terribly worried about it, but I actually think that we'll finish rather later than the 1774 date. Russia gets the faster libraries and universities, but that isn't actually that big a deal with only five cities and the ability to buy them. It's also basically two free techs (the medieval one I'm convinced pretty much gets made up over the course of that age).
 
Umm, we will want to be Republic, not a Monarchy. The extra commerce far outweighs any unit support advantage, and MP's aren't that big a deal, happiness-wise, since the lux slider is also stronger in a Republic. Also, trading luxes is cheaper with a small country. We aren't planning on many wars, so Republic makes far more sense. In a research game, Monarchy is a :nono:

Not if you draw Monotheism or Theology, or you can't really trade for the bottom part of it. I simply don't see how it gets made up. The free techs probably take some 20 turns off in this game, as that's just 7 turns a tech.
 
In my personal game as the Maya, just using trading and gifting, I have gained most of the first techs after each era. The free techs from Sci tribes are of considerable value, tied with being scientific ourselves, they should be huge.

Just a question, we would expected massive barbarian uprisings when we hit the middle ages, is this correct?
 
Unless you've busted all fog nearby, you'll see barbarian uprisings for sure. But, not as much as you would on a raging or the other setting above roaming.
 
Yes, there will be, but as noted, not if we have all the fog busted--and it's entirely possible that if we have all the barb camps exterminated near us that the uprisings happen elsewhere. At Monarch, with roaming barbs, I wouldn't be too terribly worried about it--but we should station an ACav in each city just to be on the safe side.
 
Right I have had a chance to look at map, we currently have 8 workers, how many more would you suggest for now, we also have a lot of warriors and some will need disbanding sometime,

As far as Mausoleum the ottomans are building this, if we want to make a serious attempt for it we could start right now, and build in Moscow, (it will kick in Golden Age assuming we get the colossus (6 turns away)

Or should Moscow pump out more workers for now, I will wait for comments before I start

I could get a deal on Poly with Osman at 4gpt, Literature and most (if not all of our 68pt) cash, is it worth it?

Edit: I could even sell Henry and the Vikings techs for about 110 gold and use this with lit for poly

Edit 2 : It would just with one of them, as I would not sell Lit as this would reduce value to Osman
 
I'd say we probably need in the range of 15 workers in the short term. That's off the top of my head but seems about right. (We would be able to merge most of these back in later as needed.)

I'd say if we don't get the Mausoleum, we don't get it, it isn't that big a deal (and the GA is actually a slight deterrent, we don't want that yet). Something like the Great Wall would do fine there as well.
 
I'd say wait on Polytheism, we can probably get it cheaper when we do the era change trades. I guess I'll check the save before weighing in on anything else.

Right with currency I get get map making, polytheism and 90 gold of henry

we also have a situation in that the hittites have a military alliance against us with the incans, i would like to pull some allies in, what do you think.

or i could make peace with incans to break alliance and ruin inca rep with hittites, (we would loes war happiness i think).

we also have the colossus now, I am going to wait for comments before playing on (i chose construction after currency) currently due in 12 turns.

If you have an MA with an AI against tribe A and you make peace with tribe A you will lose your reputation. There does exist a way to make them war with each other while you can make peace as you please under certain situations, but that's another story.
 
What I will do is make peace with Incans, exchanging currency with Poly and Map Making + 53 gold, I dont want the Incans bringing any more nations against us.

I will play this on this evening (uk time)
 
I think we may have to research Construction, but try to trade for it if possible, since the AI loves to research it. Remember, we can do a big picture trade at the end of era by gifting Babylon and the Ottomans into the MA. Have you ever done that?
