Sapiens has 6UC.
Humankind kind has an interesting mechanic where you pick a culture every era and each culture have 3 unique components. Therefore you have 18 unique components in total and there is always something unique in every era.

At some point UCs start stretching beyond the scope of the civ that is using them, that's my problem with component bloat. How are you trying to pretend like a Hunnic Information Era component, or an Ancient Era American component are anything more than fantasy conjecture? Cultures integrate and meld way too much for that.

I think the better mechanical (and balance) direction would be putting more UC-style elements into policy trees or beliefs. Like-minded cultures will develop the same or similar specialty units, geared towards their political needs. One that jumps to mind: Authority players benefiting from access to battering ram without needing random CS rolls.

The mix-and-match cultures is one of the things I liked about Humankind (but I only played the demo, so maybe it's less interesting after a few eras). But I know the counter argument is that you're starting to just piece together random cultures, and for many players that's not what Civ is about, which I can respect.

I would rather explore the idea of a Policy-exclusive UU instead of having more UCs, just like the Ideologies' exclusive units. But instead of unit replacement, make it optional to build so it won't mess with existing UUs.

I thought I'd like Humankind before it came out, but the lack of having any unique boost ended up being a detriment and I went back to CiV less than a month into the games launch. I think CiV has always had the nice balance of social policies, religion and the uniques of a civ making the game both variable to keep it fresh but also similar enough that I don't have to think an excessive amount about each choice.

I've never cared that much for an extreme concern for MP balance. Probably the reason I don't dislike the current level of changes in VP because I don't play competitive MP and just play with a couple friends every couple weeks (and we play on warlord, not deity, cause I personally don't like the ai having advantages and we aren't all that good at VP), and the nitty gritty changes are never actually impactful enough at the level we play at. IDK, I've never really had an actual gauge on what level of play these CiV mods average out to, but from my experience in AoE2DE's community the average player is generally much more casual than most realize.

For completely selfish reasons, I really hope that policies and religions don't become that much more unique given the selection already takes forever in my games as people take 10 minutes to make a religion. I much prefer the uniques being in the civ so the people can understand beforehand.

I kind of did this with my Ryugyong Hotel concept for Best Korea 4UC; considering the building is unfinished in reality, I allow for the building to represent different features/yields based upon which 3rd policy and/or tenet the player chooses.

Something like:

UB - Ryu-Gyong Hotel
Economics; stand-alone class
Cost: 666
3C

*Gains new features depending on the user's active ideology

*Autocracy: +10 Culture / +30 Faith; Suryong cargo capacity increased by +1. Free Military Academy in this city. Police Stations are constructed 100% faster and gain +10 Culture

*Order: +20 Science / +20 Faith; Receive a free Strategic Defense System and Great Engineer. All Great People gain +10% towards their respective yields when expended.

*Freedom: +30 Gold / +10 Faith; +1 Trade Route. Free Hotel in this city; all Hotels are constructed 100% faster and provide +10% Gold / Production / Tourism.

This is similar to Germany's UB in 4UC, Brauhaus.
A building that has different benefits based on ideology/policy is kinda interesting.
