A Modest Proposal

We, in the Off-Topic, have an incentive to post as many posts as possible, the post count. No matter how mature one is, "who has the biggest?" contests still evoke some interest.
People actually take pride in their high post count? To me its a source of embarrassment. When it reaches a certain point, they should just replace the post count with WTH??

I'm in favour of completely removing the post count.

Why not just have a post of the week thread where each person posts their favourite post of the last week, with context if necessary, for the edification of the gawping masses?
That way everyone gets to choose one, there's a high turnover, interesting posts get the extra attention they deserve and Abaddon can watch another thread for 1,000 posts.

All it needs is a few rules, such as only link one post per week (or maybe a new thread each week), and no submitting your own posts.

Then how many WTH?? would you have? ;)
I think they would add a question mark for each 10,000 posts.

It would be nice if displaying it was optional.
Yeah remove the post count. It shows my embarsssing lack of a social life.
Cheer up, my social life is twice as boring as yours.

I think its a great idea Eli:goodjob:

Actually it makes me wonder why they don't have it as optional, I'm pretty sure they could. I would certainly not care a jot if the post count was banned, but I suppose some 5 year olds get something out of it. I don't see why it shouldn't be optional though, in any forum where it is I turn it off.

Post of the Month is run over on talk.origins, so I'd be fine with it here too.

Bump to get the people in charge notice the thread.

I have a social life, I just type at 90 words per minute :mischief:

If you also dont need to look at the keyboard, then you must be like the magical critters I remember from typing class.

Yep, I read as I type.

But I also have a weird system where my left hand is not very active and my right jumps all over the keyboard, with only my right index, left index, left middle and left ring finger doing any of the work.

Everything including and right of b, g and y is done by the right hand. And only the right index finger! I spell "polio" with one finger. Probably not the most efficient way.

I bet if I'd learned the "right" way I could get 150 wpm... :)

 For some reason I thought you could write with one hand and without looking at the keyboard.

Maybe I could do that if the keyboard was in alphabetical order:sad:

Theres a joke in there somewhere, but its barely 5am here and the coffee is still brewing, so it'll have to wait.

edit: I just had my first sips of caffeine...ahhhh, delicious. Ok Last, that was a good one;)
