Report on CIA details 'brutal' post-9/11 interrogations:

Interesting to recall all the pro-waterboarding denizens of CFC who were for 'torture-lite' with all the American lives that would be saved as a result.

Not surprising to discover that it was all hokum - neither lite nor life-saving

Not a fine stain, says Feinstein.

Spoiler :
The CIA carried out "brutal" interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects in the years after the 9/11 attacks on the US, a US Senate report has said.

The summary of the report, compiled by Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the CIA had misled Americans about what it was doing.

The information the CIA collected this way failed to secure information that foiled any threats, the report said.

In a statement, the CIA insisted the interrogations had helped save lives.

"The intelligence gained from the programme was critical to our understanding of al-Qaeda and continues to inform our counterterrorism efforts to this day," director John Brennan said.

However, the CIA also acknowledged mistakes in the programme, especially early on when it was unprepared for the scale of the operation to detain and interrogate prisoners.

The CIA programme - known internally as Rendition, Detention and Interrogation - took place from 2002-07, during the presidency of George W Bush.

The report reveals that:

Detainees were subjected to repeated waterboarding, slapping, stress positions and sleep deprivation
Saudi al-Qaeda suspect Abu Zubaydah was kept confined in a coffin-sized box for hours on end
Suspects were threatened with severe harm - psychologically and physically
Interrogators used "rectal hydration" a form of feeding, without medical cause...

and much more...

There is many a conservative that would pay good money to be on the receiving end of rectal hydration. Why was the CIA giving it away?

That summary does not include the detainees that were killed, and the fact that the CIA reported only 5 or so wrongfully detained persons before and apparently the real number was over two dozen. Apparently they tortured their own informants and did not even demand information before torturing.

And, more than likely, nobody is going to be held accountable for this. Utterly shameful.

They'll probably make Rumsfeld resign again.

Americans are not well known for holding themselves accountable.

A more accurate (but longer) subject line would be: A stain on US history even if they stopped today and the next President did not resume them.

The CIA of all government offices was lying to us? Man, those guys always seemed so trustworthy!

Even non US citizens bravely giving their life for prosperous Americans.

So depressing to see that this is news for so many US users. Everyone outside the US has known about this CIA torture for donkey's years. Victims have been talking to the media since it began. There are TV shows about it, and one of the CIA's black sites in Poland is so well known that it has joined the castles and monasteries of the country as a tourist attraction!

How about all those prisoners that the CIA and America beheaded???

How about all of those women that the CIA and America stoned to death for adultery?

How about all of those people that the CUA and America killed for apostasy?

Oh wait a second, America and the CIA did not do any of that.

Some terrorists got treated unpleasantly, who really cares? In their own countries it would have been red hot pokers and maiming not pretend drowning and sleep deprivation. The report is being released purely for political reasons in the hope that somewhere this will cause an attack on America that can then be blamed on Bush.

America has done more good for more people throughout the world than any other group of people in the history of the world. Most of you sleep safely at night due to America's protection and because better men than you do what is necessary to ensure that safety.

And you are lynching negroes!

I wish this was not being used for such cheap political theatrics. It is no coincidence that it was the same day as the Dr. Gruber testimony.

I was in Iraq when this was happening. One of our local workers made a point of telling me that if he had not joined Saddam's Army, they would have cut off his ear.

Glaringly irrelevant...

Some terrorists got treated unpleasantly, who really cares?

The civilised...who still exist.

In their own countries it would have been red hot pokers and maiming not pretend drowning and sleep deprivation.

Irrelevant.

The report is being released purely for political reasons

This is what psychologists call projection.

in the hope that somewhere this will cause an attack on America that can then be blamed on Bush.

This is an example of the clear logic that thought torture was a good idea in the first place. :)

America has done more good for more people throughout the world than any other group of people in the history of the world.

Questionable, and again irrelevant in this context.

Most of you sleep safely at night due to America's protection and because better men than you do what is necessary to ensure that safety.

Most of the people who sleep safely a night do so because they are unaware of what America gets up to.

How good of you to mention 'better men that you' in a posting that references Bush.

That's almost as funny as the 'justifications' for torture.
