CORRECT!!!!!!!!

The "Oslo Report" was considered absurd fantasy when first delivered but later proved to be a goldmine of information. Its author is still unknown.

Your question Benderino!

Oh sweet, I'm so excited...my first question. Ok.....

Which two German men, accompanied by a third German, thought up the plan to invade Belgium and then France through the Ardennes, and not further north as the whole world had expected, in 1940?

You must answer who all three men were for full credit.

If it is too hard, I'll give more hints later.

Best of luck to all :)

Manstein and Hitler I'm pretty sure of, but the third?
Can't remember/don't know.

Huh, was I not following the rules? Oh sorry. I thought I was. The rules are fine. I didn't know that this question would be too hard. CrazyEddie is very very close though.

Oh I see, no, it was just a hint, not another question. I'm giving a hint as to who the third person is.

Do you want me to think of another question, then?

Yes, thank you pawpaw, that is absolutely correct!

Heinz Guderian was the third man, Hitler first thought of the rough plan to not attack up north, while Manstein, with the help of Guderian, thought up the details and the charge towards Sedan. Many higher ranking officers were angered that the chief-of-staff (Manstein) to Rundstedt was put into such high esteem with the Fuhrer, over the Commander-in-chief of Army Group A (Rundstedt) himself.

Your turn, pawpaw. :)

It was one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the Allied war effort. Basically a German U-Boat torpedoed an armed troopship, not realizing it contained hundreds of POW's. It then pulled to and picked up survivors as was normal nautical practise but upon seeing the vast numbers of survivors the U-Boat radio'd for assistance to any vessel, promising not to attack regardless of the nationality of the would be rescuer. If memory serves, several more U-Boats arrived to help but the Allies would noty respond, thinking it was a trick. Then a US Liberator flew over and despite the U-Boats flying red crosses launched a bombing run, killing many survivors and forcing the U-Boats to cut the remaining lifeboats adrift.

As a result of this action the Germans ordered that from that point on no ship was to stop to pick up foreign survivors, an order that certainly cost the lives of thousands. Donitz gave the order and it was part of the reason he was convicted of war crimes despite the Americans following the same practice in the Pacific theatre. All in all a shameful part of the war.

I was not saying anything of the sort, i just saw that someone didn't like the rulesup at the poll so i asked them why?

Oh, ok, just thought you were talking to me....carry on then :)

yes, over 1600 italian p.o.w.'s and british wounded were left to drown or the sharks. the german naval command said that if the americans and british didn't mind killing innocent germans in bombing raids why should they care about innocent surviviors from u-boat attacks. very good, your turn

To clarify this remark....

Donitz was acquitted on that charge. He was convicted on charges stemming from his use of slave labor in naval shipyards (he requested 12,000 concentration camp inmates for this purpose) and of passing along the infamous Commando Order, which stipulated that any Allied soldier or paratrooper captured behind German lines, even if in uniform, should be shot.

ComSubPac and ComSubSoWesPac never ordered their boats not to pick up survivors.

Mine I believe, as for the Americans policy on rescuing seamen PresidentMike I think that is open to debate.

Anyway, the question..

Who carried out the first real assasination attemt on Hitler, what was the method and why did it fail?

That would be Georg Elser in 1938 or 39, who planted a bomb in the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich, where Hitler made a speech on the anniversary of the 1923 putsch. Hitler had, however, left early so the bomb went off too late.
