as for the Americans policy on rescuing seamen PresidentMike I think that is open to debate.

Can you show me an order signed by either the Commander Submarines Pacific, Commander Submarines South West Pacific, Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet, the Chief of Naval Operations or the President of the United States ordering American submarines not to pick up survivors?

If you can find such an order, please let me know. Donitz wrote and signed one, but the US Navy never did.

Does that mean that American submarines stopped and picked up survivors every time? Of course it doesn't. On at least one occassion, a US sub (Wahoo) massacered survivors in the water. But they were never ordered *not* to search for survivors, unlike their German counterparts, and if conditions were safe they generally did, if only for intelligence purposes.

Case White: The invasion of Poland

Case Yellow: The invasion of France and the Low Countries (Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg)

Case Blue: The Caucasus campaign, which came to a disastrous end at Stalingrad

Who was promised the job of Supreme Commander for Overlord, the job that eventually went to Eisenhower?

Was it General Marshall? I seem to remember his name being mentioned.

General George C Marshall was his full name, if that's what you're looking for. If you mean something else, then I've no idea.

Incomplete/unacceptable answer. Please try again. :D

If you'd like a hint, feel free to ask.

Better let someone else have a try first. I really can't improve my answer any further. ( not without being a dirty cheat anyway ;) )

If you mean "what was his middle name" then his full name was;-

George Catlett Marshall

Strictly speaking, his General officer rank was temporary, although made permanent and retroactive in 1946.
