Aabra02: Hammy Builds a House

I thought the plan was to go Glib. I started on alpha which looks like it will be quite tradeable on our continent.

Here's my Got It. I know unit support's limited, but it wouldn't hurt us to get an early boat in the water for exploration & trading, either. It's not like Brennus or Abu's going to do it, and it'd be nice to have more stuff to trade to them down the road. That said, first things first, I'll take a look and see how the war effort's going.

The boat is good from what I remember. It will be interesting to see what you do with no iron or ponies. Can you set up to take an iron city as soon as it grows? Idiot lurkers wanna know.

At this point we have no reason to assume that we'll meet everyone without boats, so go ahead, it'll help us with techs.

take your time, no rush here.

Just a heads up that I'll be gone till Sunday.

Have fun :)

I hope it's for pleasure, not business. Have a good time! :)

It's all fun. Tucson for homecoming. There's quite a few of my college mates there....trouble. :p

Gotta love pirates. It's statistically proven that they help solve global warming!

lurker's comment: Arr, matey, pirates indeed be great! They actually LIKE global warming, though; as the seas rise, that gives them more seas to sail in search of plunder! :P

Well, *I* have proofs to back my claims, at least.

They understand them well enough to make a point... which happens to be what most stats are used for, meaning they understand stats all too well ;)

I see your point. I contest the assertion that stats are supposed to be used to deceive and manipulate people, however.

...hmm, if there's more to be said, we should start a new thread and stop threadjacking poor Hammy's house!

Aabra02: 1500 BC +
Preflight:
At war with the Celts.
1 City
3 workers
2 Warriors
1 spear
1 Bow

Barracks in 1
Alpha in 3
33 gold @ -3 gpt (after adjusting sliders to 70% Science, 20% Lux)
No iron
No luxes
No horses

We are a backward people! (according to our science advisor)

IBT:
No attacks
Babylon: Rax-->Spear
The Arabs are building the Oracle.

Turn 1:
Build a road where the workers stand.
Move Charlie 1 SE, where he can keep to the hills and (maybe) gather a little intel.
The Celts are willing to talk Peace. However, they're not willing to give us anything for it and, in fact, want 30 gold. Sorry Brenny, not yet. Notably, though, there are 8 cities on his list, along with 110 gold and Mysticism.

IBT:
The Portugese have completed The Oracle in Lisbon.
Accordingly, the Arabs are now building the Pyramids.
Celtic archers moving to flank Babylon.

Turn 2:
Move a worker onto the mountain to colonize the gems. I'm not sure that a colony is the smartest move, but . . . (1) Babylon will complete a spear in 1, and it's 2 turns from growth. So we'll only be down to 2 workers for 1 turn if I've calculated correctly Franky, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else to do with the workers, so I move them into the mountains S of Babylon, thinking to continue roading towards the enemy.

Brennus now needs only 26 gold for peace. Still a big ol' no.

IBT:
Alpha comes in. Begin Writing (13t @ 80%, -7 gpt, 25 in the kitty). I know we're going to need cats, but if we want the GLib, it's time to get on it.
Bab: Spear--> Worker (1); growth in 1

Turn 3: 1425
Build gem colony. Turns out it's not enough to lower the slider, though.
The Celts have an archer 2 tiles from the workers, so now I have to move them off the mountain again. Two wasted worker turns there. :(
Send the newly-born spear to park on the gem colony.
Abu will give us Mysticism and 150 gold for Alphabet. Until we get a little further along in Writing, I don't think so.
Brennus now wants Alphabet for Peace. Yeah, bite me.

IBT:
Babylon: Worker--> Curragh (1)

Turn 4:
Move new worker to begin roading an easterly path to the gems.
Begin roading the mountain SW of the gems.
Charlie continues to lead those silly Celtic archers on a goose chase.

IBT:
Celtic archers move in on Charlie. They may have him trapped.
Bab: Curragh--> Warrior (1)
Our Treasury is running dangerously low!

Turn 5: 1375
Move Bonecrusher back towards Babylon for MP duty.
Fortify Charlie on a hill rathen than move him onto a plain. Either way, he's about to be attacked.

IBT:
Bab: Warrior-->Spear (2)
Charlie holds off 2 celtic archers (2-0), promoting to veteran but going to 1 HP.

Turn 6: 1350
With a treasury at 4, I drop science to 40%. That gives us writing in 19 at +0 gpt. The Arabs will give us ~140 gold for Alpha, but I suspect that'll just be incentive for Brenny to try to get it from us for a peace treaty.
Wake charlie and start moving him out.

Make Peace with Brennus. As follows:

Now that I've put Alpha on the market, I go ahead and sell it to Abu for 160 gold. CA2 says it's worth 138. I consider buying HBR from Brennus, only to remember that there are no horses in sight.

Science back up to 80%, Writing in 10, 237 in the bank & -9 gpt.

IBT:
zzz

Turn 7:1325
continue scouting coastline. Looks like the northern part of our continent hooks around to the west.
Move the new warrior out to do some 'sploring.

IBT:
More Celtic archers gathering to our south.
Bab: spear-->bow
The Celts are building the Pyramids.

Turn 8: 1275
Move units around for more scouting.

IBT:
Celtic archers get bored and head south.

Turn 9: 1250
Bab: Bow-->curragh (1)
Complete road on hill due N of gems. Begin mining.
We're 6 turns out from writing, which was 240 beakers. Philosophy is another 180 and we're producing 19 bpt. Assuming we shoot for PHilosophy next and grab Lit as the freebie, we should have Lit in ~16 turns. Shall we start a prebuild after the curragh? Babylon is 17 shields per turn right now, growth in 7. At 17 spt, that's 272 shields in the next 16 turns. Seems like a good time to me.

IBT:
Babylon: curragh -->Pyramids (Glib Prebuild)

Turn 10:
Continue scouting.

Here's the empire:

Notes for the next better player:
We don't have any shields invested in the Pyramids yet, so nothing will be wasted if you want to switch it. I hope I didn't overstep by making peace, but it didn't seem like we were ready for a real war, so I took peace when it seemed most advantageous.

Also, I think I messed up counting turns again. :blush: CAII says that 1225 is turn 71. Sorry. You'd think I'd've learned to count by now. Oh, and of course, THE SAVE.

I see your point. I contest the assertion that stats are supposed to be used to deceive and manipulate people, however.

Not to split hairs, but just to split hairs, . . . Beorn never said that stats were supposed to be used to deceive and manipulate people. He only said that they are used to make a point. ;)

Counting is overrated. Well, however, I just counted that we'll hit 20spt at size 12: awesome. This also happens to mean 30spt in golden age. With a colony on that iron to the west ...

The deal for peace was good, it brings us closer to the middle ages, it also allows us to push the AI closer to polytheism/monarchy which will slow them down in the tech race. It puts us in a production hole though.

Writing - Philo - Lit for Glib (and MoM plan B)?

I'll see to build a last hill mine during my turn.

I'd put one or two more dinghies at sea before the prebuild. We have 20 peaceful turns, I'm for using them to build up. There is nothing mid-term we can build that wouldn't eat up our economy and I'd feel better building up a swordsmen force, when we colonize iron, than clogging ourselves with 2 dozen bowmen until the next war.
