I built an academy on marble, but I dont have the resource. I have the tech. Werent they supposed to give you the resource too? Or is that just the strategic ones?

It's actually just the strategic ones, unfortunately. Thought the same for a while :(

Haha! of course it is! $%!#$#!!

[one hour before post0 "ooh great luck for the Babylonian Empire! Our ancient ruin gave us writing and consequently a free great scientist! Let's place him on that marble tile over there and for the rest of the game we'll have marble AND exta beakers!!!"

[a little later] Why is my happiness so low?!? Oh I don't have masonry yet... ok makes sense.

[upon researching Masonry] "Ain't that about a B, I STILL am not getting that marble. "

[Economic advisor] Well sire the academy doesn't have the quarying capabilites to both carry out great studies as well as producing marble. Now Iron. That's different they can study and haul Iron up a shaft. Also produce and breed horses. But marble... let's not be silly]

Haha, yeah I agree that it is quite stupid and I also made that mistake once. I think they designed it this way since you can see all of the luxury resources from the start while strategic resources can't be seen until you've researched a specific tech.

Exactly.
First version of the game didn't connect resources with great person improvements yet.
But players layed down these improvements, then a strategic resource popped up on the same tile that couldn't be hooked up and a great person improvement can't be moved.
So it got patched.

i remember in the 90s when i learned that there was a govt program that spent something like 10 million in tax dollars to research cow farts (the amount of methane they produce). anytime i get a GS early i like to put one on Cattle or sheep just so i can say I was actually studying cow farts.

i still pretty much always settle it on food for long term use, preferably cattle, sheep, or wheat. i was a little bummed to see that i couldnt set one on an oasis. you should be able to study an oasis. or even embark one for an atoll or any sea non-lux resource. ive never tried that but that would be cool.

the little enjoyments this game provides keeps me coming back, haha.

It may sound silly, but this is what they found.........
(I feel this was a better explanation than what I was going to write)

Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 14 percent of the world's greenhouse gases. A significant portion of these emissions come from methane, which, in terms of its contribution to global warming, is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization says that agricultural methane output could increase by 60 percent by 2030 [Source: Times Online]. The world's 1.5 billion cows and billions of other grazing animals emit dozens of polluting gases, including lots of methane. Two-thirds of all ammonia comes from cows.

Cows emit a massive amount of methane through belching, with a lesser amount through flatulence. Statistics vary regarding how much methane the average dairy cow expels. Some experts say 100 liters to 200 liters a day (or about 26 gallons to about 53 gallons), while others say it's up to 500 liters (about 132 gallons) a day. In any case, that's a lot of methane, an amount comparable to the pollution produced by a car in a day.

Worth researching at least. (or putting a scientist on a cow pasture until you are ready to use him for an chuckle:lol:)

yeah, i remember reading about their conclusions in college. it also led me to knowing the difference in grass-fed vs grain-fed (corn-fed) beef. i remember the methane production being different but i dont remember which one produced less. regardless i buy grass-fed beef as it tastes a lot better (but is more expensive) and tends to be hormone-free. thanks for the link though.

Now, just imagine if those scientists could find a way to safely collect all that methane.

They haven't, but what scientists are investigating is whether they could breed cows that don't fart or burp. They are studying kangaroos, as apparently they never emit gases.
