Mods don't matter initially, without members you'll just be banning each other.

The members make the forum, not the mods.
Yep, but with bad moderators running the show, you'll have your members moving on too.

The 'stick with looser rules initially' idea is a good one - a smaller forum can afford a more relaxed, spammy atmosphere.

This forum's quite small. As TLC said, 58% of people have 0 posts. Why can't we have a spammier atmosphere? :mischief:

Forum size is measured by real numbers of posts logged (1.8 million?), as well as real numbers of posters (thousands at least). :p

Does that suggest that CFC has a spammy atmosphere?
Yes, CFC does have a spammy atmosphere. It's called Site Feedback.

It does have a spammy atmosphere, but then again we are just talking to each other. So are we going to suggest that everytime we have a conversation in the real world all we are doing is spamming? ;)

If you have the time, you could probably suffice with no moderators at first, until you seriously doubt your ability to maintain your administration duties.

Follow your instinct, or the forum will be a waste for you, you're in it for yourself as much as for the members, so run it so that you will be pleased with the overall result.

Much the same as what Lefty, col said. Don't fill up your mods with whoever you can find, or with your friends just because they're your friends or something. Look back, if possible, over their posting history and style etc.

And make sure they understand who's the boss. ;)
Ive seen this in other forums. It is a big problem making too many mods, most out of request.

My current "mods" aren't officially mods, actually. They just patrol the forums, read everything and report anything out of line. The only official official is me.

Most of my friends don't actually want to be mods....they really want to see how far they can go before I hit the button!

The problem with that is if they are only posting to test the boundaries and once they have found them they will get bored. So its important to get enough posters quickly to keep the forum running since friends can talk in real life and using chat programs...

We've got a heated discussion about which Star Trek film is the worst one. It doesn't look like it's going to die down anytime soon and it's drawn in some random surfers. I expect some other threads will pick back up once their starters get back from banland. :D

Sounds like it could be successful, although you might want to stop it from turning into a Star Trek forum... :p

Why? That's what it's supposed to be! :p

I thought about going with homopyronecrobeastiality, but there's not as many of us as you think.

The best advice I can give is to allow swearing and porn. It's a good way to counteract the sanitised nature of most fora out there. :p
