AG - Discussion thread

I'm sorry to hear that news, Aggie. I guess I'll have to wait a bit before I get to go SG'ing with you. :)

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing Succession Games. If it weren't for the SG community here (and the PBEM community at CDZ) I would have stopped playing the game a long time ago. But sadly I am of the opinion that C3C is broken. The main reasons for that are:

-The AI doesn't attack units that are far superior to their strongest attack unit. This means that a healthy army with 4 pikes is safe until bombers and tanks. It also means that an elite infantry is safe vs a vet cavalry unit. So the strongest defense in the early industrial age is safe from the strongest offense until tanks. Simply unacceptable :( The consequence of this is that the game is far easier than PTW. I congratulate everyone beating AWD, AWS or other Sid variants in C3C - it is certainly an achievement-, but to me this all is less of an achievement than beating AWD in PTW and vanilla. EDIT (Looking for a better explanation): The game can change from ultra difficult to ultra easy once you get your first military leader and turn it into a spear/pike/knight army. Getting your first army up and running is too important imvho.
-The AI hardly ever builds armies. I haven't seen ONE AI army in all my C3C games. Others have reported that they did see them (like LKendter), but this only shows that they DO exist and how rare they are.

These two issues are not to be underestimated. You can basically invade the AI without being counter-attacked. Perfect example is MM1 - Sid defiant. We have to face huge amounts of rifles, cavalry and guerillas (vs America), but they all refuse to attack elite infantries and healthy berzerk armies.

There are other flaws as well, but these are far less important to me. I would happily start up new SG's without them being solved:
-SGL's can't trigger a REAL Scientific Golden Age. This new concept of C3C has never worked.
-The infamous submarine bug has never 'bugged' me (I never noticed the bug, my games mostly didn't last this long).
-AI can't handle the seafaring trait. The concept of suicide galley got a new meaning with this trait, but the AI will not use it.
-The AI can't understand that non-combat units can be captured by non-amphibious units from boats. You can still block the coast-line with workers unless you are playing a human opponent.

I have tried playing games with all kinds of restrictions, but this simply doesn't do it for me.

I agree that this is the biggest weakness of the game. I think this weakness exists in PTW as well though. Its just harder to exploit since armies are less good at pillaging. (Not sure on this as it has been a while since I played PTW).

I like the fact that the AI is better on attack though especially ambhibious attack. Its too bad they didn't have someone that could fix up the weaknesses left.

I am considering a demigod OCC, with Space or Conquest as Gold medal wins, 20K culture as Silver medal win and UN as bronze medal win. Somehow I think that conquest on demigod is too difficult. But then again, I thought the same about emperor before AG9 :)

I said this half a year ago and I want to give it a try.

I am also going for a new 'all random settings' Sid Space Race. Just like AG11, but hopefully with a better ending. Despite the fact that it surely was a truly interesting game.

Anybody interested? Please note that I have 3 reserved spots for both games and that I think that 5 or 6 players is ideal.

My reasons for my renewed CIV3 interest? Well I tried other games in my absence (mainly R:TW) and it was fun. But despite the fact that R:TW is superior on a lot of points it lacks the depth in the turnbased part and the AI is even more stupid!! And it is just one campaign that plays similar every next try and once you've played all factions on the highest difficulty level it's basically over.

@Aggie
you sound mysterious here. do you know when I started to lurk SG's around 10 months ago, it was your games, that I followed closely. I remember shadow playing your monster map, reading books and doing housework in bewteen those mammoth turns.
Now I am actively involved here since a while and enjoy it, maybe get burnt out after a while. but the beauty about CIV is, you will always want to come back and play again.

so, do you?

edit: our posts crossed each other, my plate is a little full, but some games might end soon. I would be game for the OCC on DG

I do understand your other games comment. I am playing a lot of Warlords 4 right now. It looks like one of the keys is correct troop type for the battle. I haven't spent a ton of time, and it already looks like there are some key formulas to use.

The AI does appear stupid. The AI seems to simply throw together blocks of 8 units. To mixed of forces and you fight worse. I have a nasty fortified area and I throw catapults first to break it, yet I haven't see the AI do that. Without over spamming the post, I will state that I have appear to found several other rules along those lines that the AI fails to take advantage of.

Give more details on the Sid game and I may consider it. One of these years I need to claim a Sid win. LK74 as a try failed miserably.

I'm thinking about a standard sized map with roaming or no barbarians and the rest random (shape, %land, tribe). In AG11 I played 25 turns to check out if the start was reasonable. I had to restart 5 times to get a promising game going. I am planning to do that again. Doesn't make sense to start on a map with a max of two cities for the human.

standard sized map
That was the key piece that was missing for me. Sign me up to the remaining slot, if one is available.

I know about restarts for reasonable game. I have been playing a lot of the Rise and Rule scenario and if you can't find a bonus food it isn't worth even trying.

as mentioned in the edit above, i would like to join the DG OCC game

Yeah, I point you to my first post of this day :p

Anyway microbe, I sort of hoped that you would sign up for the OCC (as well). Changed your minds about these games? Or is your plate full?

What can I say? Sign me up for that too! But I need to go on a diet afterwards. :)
