AG - Discussion thread

I take it you want really chanllenging OCC games? ;)

How about just a deity OCC, any victory? It would surely be very difficult, but who knows if it could be won.

Or maybe something on the lines of Arathorn's LOTR extreme variant? Maybe an OCC always war on regent (standard map) or monarch (small map).

Deity OCC sounds interesting :) But it also reminds me of Phase Wars... Would it be possible to do that one on deity Nad?

Well, it's funny you should say that, Aggie...:D

I intended my next SG, after 5 Take On The World, to be called "Tokugawa the Unsettled". It was to be a variant of the phase wars, on deity. The variant would be this: you can never train any settlers! There would be no time limits like there were in phase wars, but no settlers could be trained. Any victory would be allowed but there would be gradings on victory type. I intended:

Gold Medal - Conquest, Domination or 100K culture
Silver Medal - Space or 20K culture
Bronze Medal - Diplomatic or Histographic

I intended to play as the Japanese (hence, "Tokugawa the Unsettled") with an initial aim of a domination victory, as those would most likely be the best traits: militaristic, as there would be a lot of fighting required, and religious so you can have some decent culture to help in keeping AI cities, as you couldn't build your own! The civ could be changed to another if that were preferred.

This isn't an OCC game but it would start as an OCC game. By all means take this proposal for your next OCC game if you like it Aggie!

I like to try OCC Space on Emperor with a small world (continent or archipelago). Better to disable culture win?

The tribe needs thinking. I don't think we want to play Byzantines again..but we do need scientific.

Deity OCC sounds fine too, but it would be hard to get a 20K before others launch..

So Nad, the idea is basically that you can never build a settler?

Aggie; you could try AWM with that rule - if you interested in an AW type game that is. It would be interesting only able to expand by conquest and possibly a difficult variant.
Both the AWM and Nads idea sound very difficult indeed. The AWM would probably blow up with no iron and lux cost would be high. Archer crawling all over the place though. Nads on diety would be fun since you can occillate. Again no iron, it may blow up.

Greebley: AWM without building settlers? Sounds like fun, but once we have more than 3 cities we will surely win (looking at how we crushed the AI in MELI1). The issue of that variant is the difficult start but once mastered relatively easy finish. Or am I too optimistic here?

microbe: when I try OCC space race I like to have all standard victory types enabled. I like the challenge of several possible ways to lose it.

I will certainly start another OCC after my holiday (probably OCC space race emperor). The very difficult variant (AWM without settlers or something like that) will wait. First the Sid game should be finished. A third game -focus on fun but not extremely difficult- will be started after AG7.

I am not sure reaching 4 cities would put you in as good a position as in Meli's game. The problem is that it might be later in the game if you don't build the cities yourself, which may mean you were further behind when you did get them. You can't get uncorrupt cities until the AI has filled in the land around you with cities and grown to size 2 or gotten culture in them.

Also I think meeting opponents was close to ideal in Meli's game. I am not at all sure all 5CC's would be that easy to clear the initial continent like we did there.

On the other hand, you are right that as one got more cities it would become an obvious win. This is a generic issue with AW games. They are a struggle and then become trivial. The exception would be the nCC games and the passive one that the other ppl are trying.

I definitely don't think it would be the "light" game you were looking for though :)

@Aggie: that's fine. I just tried one game and I launched @1951 with culture @ around 16500. No mobolization though.

The game is definitely doable with small setting. Not sure about standard. I almost lost - won by 1 part. AI outresearched me in the end and demanded techs all the time. Only two big AIs and myself were left in the end.

Should be a fun and challenging game.

Aggie, I'll just borrow your thread for a moment to post my own idea, hope you don't mind. I'm considering hosting an SG myself.

Chinese have been my favorite civ for a long time, and I really like their UU. Surprisingly I don't see it being played often in SGs (not even once in my memory). The game will be Chinese on a standard/pangea map emphasizing its fast movement. The variant rules are:

1. We can only build fast move units once horses are connected, which we should do asap. cats/trebs/cannons/artilleries/bombers/boats are OK of course. We can build slow units before we get horses, or after it's disconnected by enemy, but we should (re-)connect it asap.
2. We can not attack enemy's cities from its own territory (see exceptions *). This will illustrate the 3 movement of our UU. This also means combat settlers will be essential.

* exceptions: we can attack if there is no way to reach it in one step anyway even with help of combat settlers, such as first landing on the other continent, or the city is surrounded by mountains (but we should attack such cities last).

optional (for debate):
3. Never make peace if we are the aggressor. This means we'd better take out the civ quickly with our fast move units.

4. We must take out at least one city at the same turn we declare (except for the exception mentioned above).

Conquest or domination only.

I'm thinking emperor, but if I can get some really good players join in, we can try demigod. As this will be my first hosted SG, I want it to go smoothly (and not a too difficult game), and get peple signed up before I start it.

Anyone interested?

I'll not start it very soon though. None of my current SGs seem to be ending soon.

Map size can be discussed too. In fact anything is up to discussion except those in bold fonts.

If we would either play an archi game or as the only scientific civ, then I think that we have a real chance. I like to be challenged. I remember that carlosMM said that we should disable the Space Race vic option on AG3. He claimed that conquest wouldn't be possible otherwise (:p @ CarlosMM ;) ). I have also had comments about AG8 (sid) or AG1 (dromons). I don't fear a loss, but welcome the challenge. Besides: OCC Deity has been done before :) Only not by me.

I myself like the OCC Conquest emperor challenge a bit more than OCC Deity. The previous OCCC's were great to play. But both are fine.

With one city to MM, I have the time to join this game. :p I'm also ready to move up to the Emperor OCC.
