AI Civs you love to hate

Least favorite AI civs. The ones that, when they show up as your neighbors, you're all "awww, man, not /him/ again!"

Montezuma -- Yes, I know you can turn him into your attack dog if you share a religion. But it's a PITA that you have to. He'll attack even when he's weaker. He'll attack even when it's suicide. And unless you get him far into Pleased territory, he's a treacherous bastard who can turn on you at any time.

Mehmet -- Seems to be a smarter, sneakier Monty. I like playing him, don't like playing against him.

Gandhi -- I hate having Monty and Mehmet as neighbors. But I hate having Gandhi on another continent even more. By the time you find him, he's usually the tech leader. Transcontinental invasions against a technologically superior opponent are bad; letting Gandhi alone to win the space race is worse.

Mansa -- Yes, we all love trading techs with Mansa. But everything you trade him, he'll try to trade three times to the other AIs. You have to pay way too much attention to this. Also, he's annoyingly competent in his tech treeing. I can't think how many times he's beaten me to Liberalism by a turn or two.

Who else do we hate, and why?

Izzy relgious *****. Everything not with us are against us. She is also a backstaber. Mehemed is a backstaber but other than that he is nice. Alex and ragnar on higher difficulties. I got Archer rushed by ragnar once Just as i settled my second city next to copper...

I hate Alex . Atleast Monty , Izzy are predictable. This idiot however backstabs me when I am his best friend. Monty falls back on techs since he is a phycho warmonger, but Alex isn't a phycho he maintains tech and attacks when you are weak.

I hate Mansa Musa just as much in warlords as I do in vanilla. Huayna Capac has become more of a techwhore in warlords so I hate him now also. Gandhi with his new traits makes him 3rd on my list.

Yeah, Alex. I forgot Alex. I hate him too. Monty without the insanity.

He seems easier to take down early, though. Perhaps because his trait doesn't start shining until the midgame? Not sure.

Also, unlike Monty, Alex can be deterred by superior force. (But you must /stay/ superior. Stumble for a moment and he'll jump you.)

I don't really hate any neighbour, but I hate it when I start next to toku, alex and Monty and the other continent is gandhi, Mannsa musa and Hatcheptsuh!

ho, and I don't trust the chinese leaders.
I've been backstabbed too many times already.

Of course, the opposite is nice... when you start next door to Gandhi, with Alex and Monty on the other continent. Then you can control your relationship with Gandhi -- taking him down a peg if he gets too far ahead -- while the treacherous AI warmongers are someone else's problem!

Saladin: He never likes me, and even if we start off on good terms (he holds grudges so I get alot of "You traded with our worst enemy!") hes always the one who incites the wrath of the other civs, so makes it hard to not deal with him, or he unites the others under one religion.

Hatshepsut is no fun either; she does the Mansa thing, but then she's way more tempermental.

do you mean you have been attacked by hatshepetsuh?

Montezuma is a huge pain, but at least I take comfort knowing that he'll fall behind horribly in tech race. Tokugawa is another person I hate running into. Not that he's dangerous or anything, but he refuses to trade for anything. You just can't work with that guy.

do you mean you have been attacked by hatshepetsuh?

Not so much that she attacks me, just that she take everything personally and if you snub her once, she will work against you for the rest of the game. At that point, you have to hope and pray that the other civs will trade with you.

Hey you guys should try out the "random personalities" box. It's much more fun than having every civ so predictable. Gandhi started isolated on another continent, and now I pretty much rule him. I tell him what to do, and stuff. I dont invade him because I converted him to my religion, and it'll be bad for production if I did declare war on him.

hate is too harsh...

I love having catherine somewhere in the map...it's kinda sexy when she slaps you silly if she feels like she's been insulted...

shaka and monty are real fun to have in the place too:lol: ...if only they had a movie where each pops a vein after they get soooo mad after you say no to them

Monty is very scary. In one game he was on the other continent and wiped out a civ and had a vassal both on mine! He had nukes at the end and by far the biggest army. In another game he was on my continent with Alex and Ramesses and I had to constantly keep him occupied to be sure he won't attack. I finally attacked him after I got him to fight a war with Ramesses. :D He still had stacks of 15+ units to throw at me! Even though obsolete compared to mine it was still a huge fight! So yeah, Monty really forces you to consider how you play your game.

I used to hate having Toku on my continent, that's until I managed to share a religion with him and he was the happiest friend I got and the first in military. Got a DP with him and then cruised to cultural victory.

Mansa on the other continent gets a definite vote from me though.

Unfortunately random personalities just shuffles faces, see this thread. Ruins a bit of the fun for me.

That said, Mehmed is my new least favorite. I've never seen the bastard smile, he's totally unreadable and I never know exactly what to expect from him. The only thing he does with any reliability is jump into ongoing wars against me. Moreover, he's Mehmed II which just screws up my naming conventions (see here), adding to my confusion. :hmm:

The standard villains, Isabella, Monty, and Mansa, are so predictable that they don't bother me. If you play them right, they're not a problem. Tokugawa is just a cold freak.

Mehmed is sort of like Monty, he is very easy to bribe, so you need to make sure he is always busy fighting someone else, or he will turn on you.
I also have had games where both Hatty and even Gandhi have declared war on me, granted I provoked them, but its still very hard to get them to declare war on you.

Something I forgot to mention originally; the Chinese freak me out. Its mostly Quin, but Mao aswell, but whenever I am near the Chinese I get this unshakeable feeling they are plotting my doom behind my back, and no matter how hard I try I woln't figure it out until its too late. Its pretty fitting for both from a historical perspective (especially Mao) but its just this overwhelmingly disconcertting feeling being on the same map as the Chinese.

It's just a case of art imitating reality.

Stalin and Huana Capac are pretty high on my hate list these days.

Stalin's a horrible backstabber, even moreso than Alex it seems. As soon as power drops even a wee bit below his he's virtually guaranteed to declare. And he's VERY fond of pillaging

HC appears to be the new Mansa. In nearly all my recent games he's been tech leader or close to it, often with a huge slab of land at his disposal to boot. At the same time he frequently founds at least one early religion (buddhism appears to be his favourite) and manages to spread it to his neighbours.
As such he's very threatening to both space and diplo victories
